The Colonel Francis G. Ward Pumping Station supplies freshmwater to the city of Buffalo, New York and several municipalities to the east. It is operated by Veolia Water. Built in the early 20th century,[when?] the station was at one point second to Paris in terms of pumping capacity. The station features modern pumps which have replaced much older pumps that relied on boilers for its output. It is supplied by an intake crib in the middle of Lake Erie, as well as an intake beneath the Peace Bridge.
