Dinothrombium is a genus of large acariform mites, commonly referred to as giant red velvet mites.

Ecology and behavior

Summer rainstorms can trigger massive emergences of these animals, which can be large enough to be seen from an airplane.[7]

In two hours of feeding, this animal can ingest enough nutrients to sustain itself for more than a year.[8][9]
