What is intercultural communication?
Intercultural communication is the way that people from different societies interact and share information with one another. People that have completely different backgrounds socializing with one another can lead to a broad spectrum of languages, religions and beliefs colliding with one another. Communicating with other cultures occurs everywhere in today’s society, business’s, classrooms and communities. That’s why it is important that society as a whole can understand and respect different peoples customs. Constructive intercultural communication is only possible if there is a mutual respect for one another during conversation. People from different countries and cultures communicate differently and see the world from a unique perspective compared to your own. Being able to understand these differences and communicate with other cultures is a great skill to have, and can have very beneficial business applications. With the technology we have today the world has been very become a much smaller place. Specifically with the Internet, which has allowed for the transfer of information from anywhere in the world to be available almost instantly. The world has been globalized in the sense that we can travel and communicate so quickly. Cultures conversing with each other is happening every second of every day. We wouldn’t be able to accomplish anything as a country if we didn’t work together as a melting pot. The importance of cross-culture communication is being raised everyday because of how diverse society has become.

This study, based on a survey of 419 young adults, found that high levels of individuals’ intercultural communication sensitivity and multiculturalism are significant predictors of reducing individuals’ ethnocentrism. As a leadingWake Forest Study country in diversity, equality and democracy,the United States is expected to continue its leading position in appreciating cultural diversity and respecting ethnic/cultural identities. The results suggest that promoting intercultural communication sensitivity and multiculturalism is a possible measure to overcome ethnocentrism and reduce conflicts among inter group interactions. Limitations and suggestions for future research are provided.
