Slums in Bombay have existed for as long as the city itself has. However, a proliferation of slums post 1990, particularly in the Eastern Suburbs, has resulted in a majority of the city's residents being slum dwellers. Estimates place the slum population of the city as high as 70 per cent. While many of the slums have been legalised, assigned names and a housing society status - such as Nargis Dutt Nagar in Bandra recently - most of them continue to be flimsy constructions plagued by extremely poor hygiene, improper or non existent water and sewerage systems, and an extremely dense population.

Mumbai is home to some of Asia's largest slums by population. While a complete list of the slums of Mumbai is beyond the scope of this article, some of the largest and most significant slums are documented.
