Julie-Su is a fictional character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series of comic books, released by Archie Comics.
Julie-Su is a 17 year old pink female, teenage, anthropomorphic, humanoid echidna who was created by Archie Comics. She has deep violet eyes, rose pink hair with lavender bangs, weighs 46.4 kg (102 lbs) and is 84 marks (3 ft 6in) tall.[1] Her usual wardrobe consists of a vest divided equally into black and green sections, white mittens, a golden belt, and two green boots. Cybernetic implants in her arms have given them the appearance of being covered in silver rings between the shoulders and the wrists, and her left frontmost dreadlock is entirely mechanical.
History
[edit]Pre-Chaotix
[edit]Julie-Su was born the daughter of Luger and his second wife, Mari-Su. Almost as soon as she was born, Julie-Su's half brother Kragok, and his twin-sister Lien-Da, despised her and her mother, and Luger wasn't far behind for bringing the two of them into the family. She was virtually ignored by Luger as he carried out his duties as Grandmaster of the Dark Legion,[1] and only her mother appeared to truly love her.
When Mari-Su died from an unexpected accident (whether Lien-Da and Kragok may have taken part in the "accident" is unknown), Julie-Su's memory was wiped by Kragok and Lien-Da. They had greater plans for the Dark Legion and had no desire for their detested sibling to share in them, so an elderly echidna couple, Simon and Floren-Ca, took care of Julie-Su and treated her as their own daughter.[1]
For most of her life, Julie-Su grew up in a loving environment, unaware of the truth that Simon and Floren-Ca were warned never to reveal. Yet she constantly wondered why something felt missing in her life. Holding back these feelings, she later became a support troop when she was thirteen.[1]
Leaving the Dark Legion
[edit]When the Dark Legion and Knuckles eventually clashed, the results were a destroyed headquarters and complex and an angry Julie-Su, separated from her compatriots. Upon discovering Vector the Crocodile, she attacked him, drawing Knuckles the Echidna, Mighty the Armadillo, Espio the Chameleon and Charmy Bee to her. Later on, she faced Knuckles alone, and was forced to work together with him after a brief battle, during which her identity as a girl surprised Knuckles. Because of her association with the Dark Legion, Julie-Su was mistrusted at first, but gradually won over the Chaotix, Knuckles, Lara-Le and Locke's respect and friendship.[1] At first, this didn't include Vector, but the two later reconciled (to some extent) during Knuckles' brief stay in the afterlife.
Julie-Su discovered the truth about her past and developed a more romantic involvement with Knuckles, due to their unacknowledged recognition through a sixth sense the Echidnas refer to as the "Soultouch". This relationship developed when they briefly found themselves the only members of the Chaotix remaining on Mobius proper as a result of the effects of the Quantum Beam. Together with the other Chaotix, she has left Angel Island to live on the surface in Knothole Village, working freelance with the Freedom Fighters. This has led to her participation in battles against various enemies, including the Metal Sonic Troopers, the Destructix, Mammoth Mogul and Ixis Naugus. She later takes Amy Rose under her wing, teaching her skills that likely aided the pink hedgehog in uncovering the relationship between Fiona Fox and Scourge the Hedgehog.
Julie-Su later became one of the prisoners taken by Eggman during the destruction of Knothole, joining the rest of the Chaotix and many of the Freedom Fighters in the Egg Grape Chamber. She was quickly freed in an ensuing rescue mission mounted by Knuckles, Sonic, Tails, NICOLE and Amy. Together with the rest of the freed prisoners, she was transported to New Mobotropolis by Dr. Robotnik's redirected teleportation beam; shortly afterwards, she and the other Chaotix helped to defeat Robotnik's Egg Beater battlesuit.
Enerjak's Return and Afterwards
[edit]As if the Egg Fleet's bombardment of the new city weren't stressful enough, Julie-Su found herself confronted once again with the menace of Enerjak, whom she had met shortly after her first encounter with Knuckles. Brought to life by the machinations of rogue Dark Legion scientist Dr. Finitevus, the reborn Enerjak gave Julie-Su even greater cause for worry as it conincided with Knuckles' disappearance, and after she had begged him not to travel to Angel Island alone. Upon learning that the Chaotix would not be sent to Angel Island to look for him, she led the others in an attempt to escape New Mobotropolis, but Sally managed to convince them to remain behind, placating the angry Echidna with the promise that Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails would go to look for Knuckles. Julie then watched through a probe sent by NICOLE as Enerjak defeated the Dingoes and the Dark Legion, and was the only Legionnaire-former or otherwise-who didn't have her cybernetic parts removed by Enerjak's power in the first wave, during which he also sent most of the transformed Legionnaires and the other Echidnas to Albion.
Enerjak then arrived in New Mobotropolis, by which point Julie became convinced that Knuckles had died at his hands. She attacked in a rage, not caring what happened to her so long as she could avenge her love's demise. But then Enerjak revealed the full horror to her and the other defenders of the city: Knuckles couldn't have been killed by the new Enerjak, because he had become the new Enerjak. After he explained his plans to remove all technology from Mobius and thus establish peace, she tried to convince him to abandon his madness. Furious, he tried to force her to share his vision by restoring her body to a fully organic state, but was thwarted by the arrival of Sonic. She and the other Chaotix and Freedom Fighters were then caught in a pitched battle as first Sonic and then Shadow the Hedgehog fought Enerjak, only to be defeated by the super-powered Echidna. Luckily for the already damaged city of New Mobotropolis, the Egg Fleet arrived and captured Enerjak, beaming him to a new Egg Grape Chamber so that his power could be used by Dr. Robotnik to fuel his own schemes.
Julie had little time to worry over Knuckles' fate, however, before Locke brought her and Sonic to a secret facility where the Brotherhood of Guardians had stored a powerful weapon as a precaution against Enerjak's return. Locke's intentions for the pair were obvious: his plan was to have them use this weapon to kill Enerjak. Vehemently opposed to this course of action, Julie-Su was surprised when Sonic apparently decided to cooperate. Before she could ask the Hedgehog for an explanation, however, Locke led them right into a battle with the Destructix, led by Scourge the Hedgehog and Fiona Fox. For all their skills, the trio couldn't defeat them, and Archimedes, Knuckles and Locke's mentor, intervened. Julie-Su's doubts in Sonic were unjustified as he then destroyed the weapon Locke had been seeking, not willing to kill his friend in order to stop him. She was then left behind as Sonic left to face Enerjak, using the Master Emerald to become Super Sonic.
Locke was still of the opinion that Knuckles had to be destroyed, but Julie cut him to the quick by accusing him of hating his own son. Leaving him to ponder that shocking possibility, Julie went to confront Dr. Finitevus, intent on making him change Knuckles back. The mad doctor laughed at the suggestion, saying that he couldn't because his spell could only be undone by the sacrifice of a life. More than willing to die for her love, Julie-Su was about to attack, but was stopped by first Archimedes, and then Locke. After a brief battle with Finitevus, Julie watched as Locke made his way to the Emerald and undid the spell, promising Locke that she would tell Knuckles the reasons behind his actions and that Knuckles would understand why he had done what he had. With Knuckles freed and Finitevus fled, Julie and Sonic were both eager to return to New Mobotropolis-but Knuckles refused, saying that it was now his duty to watch over the Master Emerald, even if he had to do so alone. Julie-Su acquiesced reluctantly, understanding that she could do little to convince Knuckles until he chose to be convinced. Her patience was soon rewarded, as Knuckles returned to the Chaotix shortly after they had completed the construction of a bridge between Angel Island and the now free-floating Master Emerald shrine and he had visited the Echidnas and Dingoes to observe how they were faring after his rampage. Of course, she would undoubtedly have been less pleased to learn that Knuckles had been goaded into action by the ever scheming Rouge, whose designs still included bending Knuckles to her will.
Possible Futures
[edit]Two alternate future versions of Julie-Su have been shown. In each, Julie-Su is partnered with - but not married to - Knuckles, because they both believe in commitment over ceremony. They have a daughter named Lara-Su. However, in one variation, Knuckles has gone insane and leads the Dark Legion, while in the other he is a loving father but refuses his daughter's request to become a guardian. Knuckles eventually does give their daughter guardianship after he reflects on the death of his father, but any happiness Julie-Su may take from it was never shown, as the time line was altered dramatically before she got the news.
The future Julie-Sus are both protective of Lara, and only want what's best for her. In Mobius: 25 Years Later, Julie-Su is concerned by her partner's unusual behavior. This version of Julie-Su lost her memory of the original future after Lara-Su and Sonic's trips back in time altered history, as she had no method by which to escape losing her memory. As such, the alternate Julie-Su is unaware of the rightful timeline. 25 Years Later Julie-Su is also devoid of her cyborg implants, as a result of Chaos Knuckles' attempt to reshape Mobius as he saw fit. Most likely, he saw-or even presently sees-bionic implants as some sort of aberration.
Romance
[edit]In the current storyline, Julie-Su is Knuckles' girlfriend, both of them acknowledging each other as their destined partners through the Echidna sixth sense called the Soultouch.[1] Julie-Su once stated that Knuckles is her soulmate, the only being who makes her feel like she's more than a soldier.[2] According to several futuristic stories in the series, she marries, or at least is committed to Knuckles and they have a daughter named Lara-Su. However, like other various couplings in the Sonic continuity, the chances of them getting married and/or having a child happening in anything except an alternate future is highly unlikely, unless of course at the end of the comic. The official artists have also already stated that Julie-Su and Knuckles will never be married-at least not in the traditional sense. Julie-Su and Knuckles do not want to go through a traditional wedding, which the Mobius: 25 Years Later story attributes to their belief that commitment means more than ceremony.
Recently, Julie-Su has found a rival for Knuckles' affections: none other than Rouge the Bat.[2] Rouge has vowed to take Knuckles from Julie-Su, despite Julie-Su's warnings. However, Knuckles has not shown any interest in Rouge, and has repeatedly stated that Julie-Su is the only girl he will ever love. Also, since Rouge's interest in Knuckles is purely for her own gain, it is unlikely that she will be able to sway his opinion.
Personality
[edit]Julie-Su is very similar to Knuckles in personality, acting tough but in reality, is quite caring. She is an advocate of "girl power", serving as the only female member of the Chaotix until Saffron Bee and later Rouge joined the group. Julie-Su is always willing to go into any danger, particularly when it involves saving Knuckles, whom she always attempts to aid despite his assurances that he doesn't need it. Recently she's shown that she would be willing to die for Knuckles without hesitation.
Julie-Su, known to her friends as Julie, Jules, or 'Su, prefers to go into battle with her friends rather than wait on the sidelines. She is also even more of a tomboy than Sally, and refuses to be seen in a dress in the present of the comics-though she does wear them on special occasions in 25 Years Later. Despite this, she and Sally do share a number of feelings, including a deep desire not to see the men they care about-namely, Knuckles and Sonic-get hurt.
Weapons and Abilities
[edit]Julie-Su carries with her a double-barrel multi-purpose proton gun and a taser.[1] In tradition with her family history in the Dark Legion, some parts of her body have been replaced with cybernetic implants. These implants include her left arm, giving her greater physical strength. Her left front most dreadlock has also been replaced, and can be used as a transmission antenna.[3] Julie-Su is also trained in various forms of martial arts like Knuckles.
