Article Review

I stumbled upon the Article page of the Mark 60 CAPTOR mine, and it has two major problems: Lack of citations and plagiarism of incorrect information, which need to be fixed.

Lack of Citations

Citations are probably the most easily noticed problem on this page. The Article for the CAPTOR mine is very sparse of citations. It's only citation being the explanation of the acronym of the mine itself. There is ample opportunity for them, as there are numerous details about its service history and specifications. Missing Citations that stand out are the purpose of the mine, the detection and acquisition process of the torpedo and the time period that it was used. The first author of the Wiki page originally referenced an almanac titled "The Almanac of Seapower 1987" ; which one would think could provide ample information to use and cite; however, after checking for the book online and in the Everett library I could not confirm what facts exactly could be cited by the almanac. The author also cites a broken link that redirects to a blank home page, so either I will try to find that article or remove the external link entirely. I would say the article is very sparse and that the lack of citations is the most needed change on this page.

Plagiarism

During my research of this mine itself, I found many articles that used similar wording to that of the description of the CAPTOR mine in the article. What tipped me off to check this was the fact that the author originally explains the acronym of the CAPTOR mine in the first paragraph but also re-explains it again in the second paragraph about the detection and acquisition processes of the mine. I believe that this needs to be removed and rewritten not only because the repetition of the information and plagiarism but because the information does not match up with my and others research on how the torpedo actually tracks the target. The CAPTOR mine is really just a highly used torpedo that was standard in US ships at the time encased in a sort of shell. The way that the torpedo acquires its target on the CAPTOR article is different than the one on the article about its' payload, the Mark 46 torpedo.

Reflection

After reviewing and researching the topics covered in this article, I believe that this needs a major overhaul. This article is abundant with missing and unverified information, as well as topics that are plagiarized and incorrect. I cannot know exactly how the original author obtained their information in the first revision of this article, but I can ascertain that the webpage is in definite need of additions and editing. I will be adding as many citations as I can and editing the text in the page itself. I will most likely post my a response in the talk page explaining my changes.
