Dr. Doris Forte' (optometry)
Doris Dean Forte'(born August 4, 1950 in Houston, Texas) is the first African American female optometrist to have served in any branch of the Armed Forces of the United States of America. After earning a Doctorates of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry in May, 1972, Dr. Forte' was commissioned into the United States Navy Reserves as a Leuitenant JG in the Medical Service Corps where she served as an optometrist until 1979 when she was honorably discharged from active duty as a Leuitenant. Upon retiring from the private practice of optometry in 2007, Dr. Forte' founded You're Living Proof, a 501(c(3) non-profit organization that assists survivors of domestic violence and educates teens about dating abuse through its national initiative, THE SQUEAKY WHEEL PROJECT.
