Jewels 1st Ring, originally Jewels raising an army match (JEWELS 旗揚げ戦, jewels hataage sen) was the inaugural MMA event of the then newly created women's MMA promotion Jewels. The event took place on November 16, 2008 (2008-11-16) at Shinjuku Face in Kabukicho, Tokyo, Japan.[1][2]

Background

[edit]

Women's promotion Smackgirl had faced several problems prior to being bought by Marverous Japan. The new parent company decided to change the promotion's name into Jewels to have a fresh start.[3][4] It was decided that the first events would have the same rules as Smackgirl and broadcast on Samurai TV in Japan.[4][3] The event was first announced on October 24, 2008 (2008-10-24).[4]

The first four matches announced were Saori Ishioka vs. Mika Nagano, Misaki Takimoto vs. Masako Yoshida, Sachiko Yamamoto vs. Kazumi Kaneko and Harumi vs. Shizuka Sugiyama.[3][4] Abe Ani Combat Club members Megumi Fujii and Hitomi Akano were confirmed for the card at a press conference held on November 7, 2008 (2008-11-07).[5][6] The rest of the card was announced a few days later.[7]

Jewels 2nd Ring, was the second event of women's MMA promotion Jewels. The event was held on February 4, 2009 (2009-02-04) at Shinjuku Face in Kabukicho, Tokyo, Japan.[12][13][14]

Background

[edit]

On January 2009 (2009-01), the event was first announced[15] and a few days later the first bouts were announced, Hiroko Yamanaka vs. Michiko Takeda, Misaki Takimoto vs. Yasuko Tamada, Masako Yoshida vs. Shinsaki Ozawa and Shizuka Sugiyama vs. Shiho, along with the participation of Saori Ishioka and Mayumi Aoki.[16] On January 23, 2009 (2009-01-23), debutants Hanako Kobayashi and Chihiro Oikawa were added to the card.[17] The card had a rematch between Hiroko Yamanaka and Michiko Takeda, who had previously fought in Smackgirl in 2007, with Yamanaka winning the bout by split decision.

Event

[edit]

The opening portion of the event had two matches, one grappling bout that finished by decision and an amateur rules bout that ended by submission.[18][19] In the first bout of the main card, Rina Tomita defeated Harumi by submission (armbar) at 0:22 of round 2.[18][19][20][21] At the beginning of the fight, Tomita exchanged strikes with Harumi, landing effective punches and kicks to Harumi's arms and body. As Harumi responded, Tomita took the fight to the ground where she held the advantage for the rest of round 1. In the second round, Tomita countered a take-down with an armbar, forcing Harumi to submit.

In the second bout, Shizuka Sugiyama defeated Shiho by TKO (referee stoppage, punches) at 2:55 of round 1. Starting with a flying knee, Sugiyama attacked Shiho with punches and kicks for the whole fight, while Shiho was only able to do some sweeps to try to defend. After the fourth standing count, the referee stopped the fight.

The next bout was won by Masako Yoshida who defeated Misaki Ozawa TKO (doctor stoppage). Ozawa started the fight with looping punches that damaged Yoshida and Yoshida countered with punches and kicks. After Yoshida got a take-down and Ozawa reversed it, the referee stopped the fight to check Ozawa's nose, which had a non-bloody liquid streaming. The flow could not be stopped and the doctor called the bout, giving the TKO victory to Yoshida.[20][21]

The fourth match pitted Mayumi Aoki against Chihiro Oikawa in an openweight bout. Aoki defeated Oikawa by submission (armbar) at 2:30 of round 2. In the first round, pro wrestler Oikawa threw some jabs which managed to create some distance until Aoki started to counterattack with hooks and straights, and eventually Aoki dropped Oikawa with a right hook. During the course of the second round, Aoki landed kicks and knees that made the referee give Oikawa two standing counts. Oikawa pulled guard and attempted to get an armbar but Aoki defended and applied an armbar herself, forcing Oikawa to submit.[20][21]

Future Valkyrie flyweight champion Yasuko Tamada defeated Misaki Takimoto by unanimous decision in the fifth match.[18][19][20][21] Takimoto landed punches and kicks in the first round, until Tamada took the fight to the ground, where she controlled position. Returned to their feet, Takimoto once again took then offense but Tamada took her down again. In the second round, Tamada landed punching combinations and, combined with take-downs, Tamada controlled the second round, earning a unanimous decision victory over Takimoto.[20][21]

In the sixth bout of the main card Hiroko Yamanaka defeated Michiko Takeda by TKO (punches) in an openweight fight. Takeda was dominated during the first round by the striking ability of Yamanaka, who effectively used her height advantage, landing low-kicks and punches. At the end of round one, Takeda tried to apply a heel hook which Yamanaka avoided and countered with more strikes. The next round was also dominated by Yamanaka, who made Takeda take a standing count a little before being dropped with a one-two combination that forced the referee to stop the fight.[20][20][21]

In the last match of the event Saori Ishioka defeated Hanako Kobayashi by TKO (punches) at 2:20 of round 1. Kobayashi landed kicks on Ishioka at the start of the fight. Ishioka countered with punches to the face and the fight became a striking exchange between the two, which ended in a standing count for debutant pro-wrestler Kobayashi. Kobayashi tried once again the kicks and Ishioka responded with punches which gave Kobayashi a second standing count. Shortly after, Ishioka finished the fight with punches.[20][21]

Jewels 3rd Ring, was a (MMA) event held by promotion Jewels. The event took place on May 16, 2009 (2009-05-16) at Shinjuku Face in Kabukicho, Tokyo, Japan.[22][23][24]

Background

[edit]

The event was first announced on February 2009 (2009-02)[25] and the first part of the card was revealed on April 2009 (2009-04), with Hiroko Yamanaka as the main event and two shoot boxing matches with Misato Tomita and Saori Ishioka.[26][27] Most of the rest of the card was revealed by the end of that month[28] and the order of the bouts was announced shortly before the event.[29]

Event

[edit]

The opening card consisted of a grappling bout between Miyoko Kusaka and Yoko Kagoshima, with Kusaka winning by submission (rear naked choke), and an amateur rules match between Hiroko Kitamura and Emi Murata, in which Kitamura defeated Murata by submission (armbar).

In the first match of the maing card, Miki Morifuji defeated Mayu by KO (punches) at 0:16 of round 1. Morifuji launched a series of punches which weren't defended by Mayu, knocking her down and rendering her unable to get up.[30][31]

In the second bout Yuko Oya defeated Hanako Kobayashi by unanimous decision. Both fighters traded punches during the first round, until Oya went for takedowns. In the second round, Oya kept taking the fight to the ground and the rhythm slowed down eventually, with Oya taking the unanimous decision.[30][31]

The third match had Chihiro Oikawa defeating Harumi by submission (armbar) in the first round. Oikawa started striking Harumi aggressively and went to clinch trying to throw Harumi to the mat, but Harumi defended until Oikawa started changed tactics and started punching Harumi from the close distance. Harumi fell and Oikawa got the armbar.[30][31]

In the fourth match Mika Nagano defeated Misaki Ozawa by technical submission (armbar). The fight started with a takedown by Nagano. Ozawa defended well while on the ground and the referee stood both fighters up. Ozawa went for a takedown, but Nagano reversed it and got an armbar, which prompted the referee to stop the fight.[30][31]

Next, Shizuka Sugiyama defeated Celine Haga by unanimous decision. Using kicks, punches and ground control, Sugiyama dominated Haga, with Haga only trying occasional haymakers and trying ineffectively to take the fight to the ground during the first round. During the second round, Sugiyama continued to dominate the fight, receiving a yellow card for accidentally striking Haga's head on the ground, an action forbidden in Jewels, but winning a unanimous decision.[30][31]

In the sixth match, Misaki Takimoto defeated Yukiko Seki by submission (armbar). Seki took the initiative landing some punches at the beginning, but Takimoto kept her distance and while in the clinch dropped Seki with knees. Takimoto then tried to get a rear naked choke, which Seki defended, and Takimoto transitioned into an armbar and forced Seki to submit.[30][31]

The seventh and eight bouts of the event were Shoot boxing fights. In the first one Misato Tomita defeated Kozue Nagashima by split decision and in the second one Saori Ishioka defeated Kanako Oka by unanimous decision.[32][33][34][23]

The final fight of the event was an openweight bout between Hiroko Yamanaka and American Shannon Hooper, with Yamanaka emerging victorious by unanimous decision. In the first round, Hooper tried to close the distance to land punching combinations but Yamanaka used her reach advantage and leg kicks to keep Hooper away. Using jabs, kicks and occasional knees while in the Thai clinch, Yamanaka controlled the first round, damaging Hopper's legs.[30][31] In the second, Yamanaka continued to use the same tactics, winning a unanimous decision.[30][31]

Ham was penalized with a yellow card at the beginning of the fight for being 0.4 kilograms (0.88 lb) above the limit agreed. Ham used her Muay Thai to keep Takimoto on the defensive. Takimoto responded with her karate, but Ham was the more effective striker. By the second round, Ham's strikes had weakened Takimoto and around the middle of the round, Ham connected a punching combination near a corner that resulted in a standing count for Takimoto. Takimoto tried two unsuccessful takedown attempts and once again was dropped with more punches. Ham took the unanimous decision.[51][53][59][60][58][61][52][62][70]
