Newton Ferrers House is a late 17th-century country house in St Mellion, Cornwall. It is a Grade I-listed building with English Heritage.[1]
History
[edit]Newton Ferrers had belonged to the ancient Coryton family for considerable time, from at least the 14th century.[2]
Newton Ferrers House was built for Sir William Coryton, 3rd Baronet, between 1685–95.[1] His son, the 4th Baronet, died without male heirs, but it remained the seat of the Coryton until the early 19th century. It came into the family of Edward Collins (1782–1855), who was compensated for the freedom of slaves in Tobago.[3] It was restored in the 1880s for his son Digby Collins, a prominent jockey and horse judge.[4]
The house was next occupied by Sir Robert Abdy, 5th Baronet, and his wife, was gutted by fire in the 1940s.
