About My Self
[edit]Over the last several years, students have been using Wikipedia alongside their academic careers. I, Kaleigh; am now apart of this very same journey. Currently, I am a 17-year-old high school student apart of a college program known as Running start. This program is offered in few states, Washington is one of them. The program allows eligible high school students to take college courses to gain credits for further education. Other then my current academics, several of my hobbies include crafting, crochet, and music. Since as long as I could remember, I've always been crafty; particularly crochet. I have been Crocheting for approximately the last ten years. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. Music, on the other hand, is a newer hobby. Over the last two years, I have been learning the violin.
I have known about Wikipedia for several years, but have never really explored it. Now having the ability to use and discover Wikipedia as a community of information will be a great way to discover more topics. A topic that I am always interested in is Crochet. The Crochet page does spark my interest in editing and/or adding my own information. I do see myself using Wikipedia in the future. Having a place where plenty of information is stored and available can help greatly when information may seem scarce online.
Article Critique
[edit]When choosing a subject to work on, I decided on Crochet. When reading the Wikipedia page, I noticed a few needed citations. Other than that, the page was really good. Then I visited the Tunisian crochet page on Wikipedia and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: correct terminology, page structure, and how up to date the page is.
At first glance, the page sounds ok. But as someone who has used the technique, the improper terminology can cause confusion. Crochet itself has many term variations that have developed Since its creation. And since Tunisian is a style, several of the terms would easily transfer over. Majority of the page was explaining the craft with overly simplified terms.
The structure of the article is simple and straightforward. But there isn't much information regarding the history of the technique and its development. The page itself was explaining how to use the technique and the end product. Several other stitches were mentioned but were never elaborated on. The page could have several sub-categories to explain other stitches.
When looking at the history section of the page. The article had been updated off and on since 2001. The most recent updates were in February 2018. Many of the updates were just minor grammar, punctuation and spelling errors. The craft itself has not changed since its creation, so there isn't really a need to change the article.
The Tunisian page on Wikipedia explains one aspect of Crochet. And with these regards, there are several things that could help the page. By using better terminology, the page can sound more professional. The structure of the page does not appear to be very informative, unlike the original Crochet page. Finally, it appears the page is in need of another update based off the page's history.
