Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a 2017 English-language French science fiction action-adventure film written and directed by Luc Besson and co-produced by Besson and his wife Virginie Besson-Silla. It is adapted from the French graphic novel series Valérian and Laureline, specifically the third volume Empire of a Thousand Planets , created by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne respectively star as Valerian and Laureline, two spatio-temporal agents on a mission to identify and stop the threat that could devastate the titular city of Alpha and the numerous species living within it. With an estimated budget of €197 million budget, the film is a passion project for Besson, who started reading the original series when he was 10-years old and was even inspired by it for his own other science fiction film The Fifth Element in 1997. It is slated to be released on July 21, 2017 in North America and on July 26 in France.
