Windells Camp, based in Mount Hood, Oregon, is an action sports camp providing coaching for skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, and BMX riding. The camp is operated as a full-time school, but without classrooms, offering academic instruction through online programs while providing a sports curriculum on site. The private campus opens for holidays, spring break, and summer sessions.
Program
[edit]Windells Camp has been in operation for more than twenty years as a summer camp. The Windells private campus includes two dry ski slopes, with a plastic material that allows skiing and snowboarding without snow, an air bag jump,[1] two olympic trampolines, and a foam pit for training. Windells summer staff hosts activities such as skateboarding clinics, BMX races, paintball, dodge ball, and karaoke. Summer on-snow activities are available on Mount Hood at the Timberline Lodge ski area.[2] The camp has been designated a summer training camp for U.S. Snowboarding, the United States governing body for Olympic snowboarding.[3]
Windells skateboard facilities make up the Northwest’s largest indoor and outdoor skate park totaling over 50,500 square feet.
Camp History
[edit]Tim Windell, camp founder and former professional snowboarder,[4] established the summer snowboard program at Whistler in 1988. A few years later, Windell moved the camp to Mt. Hood, Oregon due to the proximity to the Portland International Airport and the year round natural snow. Windell purchased the Shamrock Motel in Sandy, Oregon and began to transform the once motel into the Windells Campus.
Over the past 12 years, the facilities at Windells Camp have progressed and adapted according to the needs of the campers. BOB (Building Out Back) was created in 2004, providing year round training facilities.[4] Following the creation of BOB, the Concrete Jungle was added to the campus in 2006. The entire campus was transformed into a skate park after this project. In 2010, Windells purchased and installed a private lift at Timberline. This addition gave campers more time on the snow for training.[4]
Windells Academy
[edit]In 2009, Tim Windell founded Windells Academy, a full-time action sports boarding school located on the Windells campus. [4] The specialized boarding school provides high school students with an accredited online education as well as athletic training in skiing, snowboarding, and skateboarding.
Tim Windell
[edit]Tim Windell, former professional snowboarder, is the founder of Windells Camp. Today, Tim Windell lives in Brightwood, Oregon. He is an active member of the USASA board, the largest snowboarding organization in the world, and is one of only five voting members. Windell holds eight National snowboarding titles. He stood second overall in the 1989 and 1990 World Cup Tour of Snowboarding. Windell placed second in the 1991 World Championships, and was designated to be the voice of North American Snowboarders from 1987 through 1993.
