The period is near average for the amount of typhoon-equivalent systems. Typhoon Malakas transitioned into an unusually powerful extratropical cyclone in terms of sustained winds. The mid-January reached the very low central pressure and killed 7 people in Hokkaido, Japan.

The amount of typhoon-equivalent systems is above average. The mid-January system is an unusually strong extratropical cyclone in terms of ten-minute maximum sustained winds. The April one caused significant damage and deaths over Japan. The last one is the only June typhoon-equivalent system since records from 2001, which transitioned from Typhoon Mawar.

The amount of typhoon-equivalent systems is near average, yet the January system is the most intense Northwest Pacific extratropical cyclone in terms of ten-minute maximum sustained winds, since reliable records from 2001. It also killed 5 people in Japan.

The amount of typhoon-equivalent systems is above average. Except the system in October transitioned from Typhoon Wipha, other typhoon-equivalent systems did not cause deaths.

Although the amount of typhoon-equivalent systems is relatively low, the November system which absorbed the remnants of Typhoon Nuri became the most intense North Pacific extratropical cyclone in terms of atmosphere pressure since reliable records. The December system significantly affected Japan and caused 5 deaths over the country.

During this near-average period, the first typhoon-equivalent system which absorbed the remnants of Typhoon Dujuan and peaked in early October was the most intense extratropical cyclone over the Sea of Japan in recent years, killing one person in Hokkaido, Japan.
