Viona Ielegems

[edit]

You recently created the article Viona Ielegems. This was in fact the second re-creation of the article since its deletion as a result of this AfD. If you believe that the AfD was improper (and not merely that you disagree with it), or that my redeletion was improper, or that Ielegems has the notability required for an article and that she could get a reliably sourced article, then please bring up the matter at Wikipedia:Deletion review. If you plan to do this but would first like me to place the deleted material in your userspace, please ask. -- Hoary (talk) 04:56, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Yellamma temple, Saundatti

Hello! Your submission of Yellamma temple, Saundatti at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 20:09, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Tell me, are you really writing these articles? This and other recent nominations of yours just don't seem to match the quality of work you've been producing for years. Every single article that I promote from you needs further editing for English grammar. I just spent a lot of time on Savadatti fort, but I don't have the time or desire to fix this one up. Yoninah (talk) 06:33, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Yoninah I have always valued your reviews and addressed issues raised by you. I am disturbed by your present observations. I only write the articles. Some of them were written probably in a hurry and not adequately edited before posting. I will try to rectify the issues in Savadatti fort. Do you think that I should not post my articles on DYK? Nvvchar. 07:54, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Not at all. You are the most prolific contributor to DYK and keep the wheels moving! But I think you should take extra time to check the grammar before you post an article. They often drop "the"'s and don't always paraphrase the source correctly. I did a thorough edit of Savadatti fort, as you can see from the page history, so I don't think more needs to be done there. Please look over and polish up Yellamma temple, Saundatti. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 08:30, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
  • OK, I spent the time polishing up Yellamma Temple, Saundatti. Please see my edit history and note where you need to insert "a"s and "the"s. Regarding the hook, the source for the last paragraph under "Features" says that the girls are marrying "God", not the temple god (and the temple doesn't have a god, just a goddess). But the lead says they're being "dedicated to the temple", citing an offline source. Perhaps you could reconcile these two facts. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 00:41, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
  • Thanks, Yoninah. I have changed the reference to an online source which on page 52 states "In India even today people dedicate girls to goddess Yellamma of Saundatti in Karnataka in fulfillment of their vow". I have modified the sentence in the "Features" section. There is probably confusion in use of the word "God". This reference [1] supports that the Devadasi practice of dedicating girls to the goddess at the Yellamma temple was prevalent. There are many such book references in support of this practice. In case you wish to remove all ambiguity, I will delete the last few lines of the "Features" section.Nvvchar. 12:33, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
  • It's fine to leave the mention under Features, but what does "Another theory mooted" mean? There's no verb in this sentence. Yoninah (talk) 17:18, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
[edit]

Having just tried to read Potato production in India, I have to agree with Yoninah in the secion above that the writing of your recent articles is way below par.

  • "Potato, called as "a crop-exotic" though planted in India during early 17th century it was systematically experimented 11 varieties in the hills of Simla hills during 1909."

This was clearly taken from [2]:

  • "Potato is a crop exotic to India. Although, the crop was introduced into India in early 17th century, a systematic attempt for introduction was made in 1909 when 11 of its varieties were tried in Simla hills."

In your attempt to avoid copyvio you have mangled the text beyond recognition. Other bits are a lot closer still to the source you used:

  • "johhson saw good potatoes produced in 1842 in the immediate vicinity of Kolkata and still finer varieties in the hills of Cherapunjee in Meghalaya."
  • "Johnson [...] saw good potatoes produced in 1842 in the immediate vicinity of Kolkata and still finer ones in the hills of Cherrapunjee (presently in Meghalaya)"[3]

This is a copyright violation, something you were already warned about. Upon checking the whole "History" section were the above sentence was taken from, it turns out that you rewrote the first few sentences, and then copied whole parts wholesale or with absolutely minimal changes. Compare e.g.

"The cultivation generally spread widely throughout the northwestern hill region because the trade between the hills and plains developed by 1839"

with

"The potato cultivation generally spread widely throughout the northwestern hill region because the trade between the hills and plains developed by 1839."

Or

"Captain David Scott 1802-31 , the agent of the Governor General of British India in the northeastern frontier introduced potatoes during 1830 at Nongkhlaw village msl 1000 m in the Khasi hills. "

with

"Capt. David Scott (1802-1831), the agent of the Governor General of British India in the northeast frontier introduced potatoes in the North-East region of India during 1830 at Nongkhlaw village (msl 1000m) in the Khasi hills."

I have deleted the article. Fram (talk) 08:16, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

  • Fram I was in the process of adding the original text to History section to rewrite it in my own words, when it got saved by mistake and I got busy for short period. It was an unintended mishap. I was in the process of correcting it when you deleted the article. I should have first created it in the sandbox. Never mind. What is done is done. Nvvchar. 09:26, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I don't know if you're familiar with this template, but when you copy text from one Wikipedia article to another you should note it in the edit summary of the new page, and also affix this template to the talk pages of both the new and original articles. Tracy Edser

[edit]

You have created Tracy Edser. The first sentence of the body, "Tracy Edser was born in 1983 in Johannesburg, South Africa in an underprivileged white family." is sourced to [4] and to [5]. Neither source seems to support any aspect at all of the preceding sentence: not her year of birth, not her place of birth, and not her background (not even her race, for that matter). So why did you add these two sources to this line, and where did you actually get this information from (it doesn't seem to be included in any of the three other sources you used, although my Japanese is a bit rusty)? As far as I can tell, at least her year of birth is wrong and seems to be 1982 instead. So how much of the remainder should we trust? Fram (talk) 14:40, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

  • Fram Let me clarify, pl. This reference [6] says "Tracy is 30 years old and lives in Johannesburg" and for this reference I found the year as 2013 as the source year of the reference. As I could not find any other reference giving the exact date or year of birth, I interpreted her year of birth as 1983. As you say it is wrong I have removed it. Pl give me the relevant reference so that I can introduce it again. The second reference [7] says "I was born into a typical poor white family in Johannesburg, but escaped the cycle of poverty." But purely by oversight, I misinterpreted it as Tracy's version but it was said by Nadine Hutton. I have corrected the opening sentence now. Sorry about this mix up. I have also removed the year of birth in the absence of an exact reference. I have corrected it now. With regard to the Japanese reference I have used Google translated text.Nvvchar. 02:14, 18 June 2016 (UTC)

On 27 June 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Inger Hanmann, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that while Inger Hanmann created enamels for the Copenhagen Airport, her daughter Charlotte made processed photographs of the urban environment? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Inger Hanmann), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

You might be interested in doing a DYK on this oddball, never heard of her, have you Char? ;-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:24, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld This article definitely needs to be nominated on DYK But, I have stopped nominating on DYK as many of my recent articles have run into problems. Thanks.--Nvvchar. 01:06, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
I was kidding actually, but wasn't sure if you were aware of the article. Sorry to hear you've been having a hard time with DYK, but GA can't be a replacement for that. The articles really need a lot more work, and with those they should be thoroughly copyedited and checked before you nominate them. I've not contributed to DYK for several years now as you well know, I'm of the opinion it should be replaced with something else. Personally I'd rather work on articles which are going to get a million odd page views a year than just a thousand odd on DYK day. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:08, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
