Elvis Costello (born Declan Patrick MacManus, 25 August 1954) is an English singer-songwriter[1] who first came to prominence as a leading British exponent of the punk/New Wave genre.[2][3] in the late 1970s. One of the outstanding features of his first albums was the craft and catchy incisiveness of the lyrics, and Costello’s lyrical intelligence has remained one of his trademarks. A second tendency during the four decades and more than 30 studio albums of his career is the diversity of his musical vocabulary. He has gained enduring critical respect with albums and collaborations in genres ranging from punk and pop to classical and country. Costello has been called “one of the most innovative, influential, and best songwriters since Bob Dylan.”[4]
Costello has won multiple awards in his career, including a Grammy Award, and has twice been nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male.[5] In 2003, Elvis Costello & the Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[6] In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Costello number 80 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[7]
