Prior to the advent of the British in India, the primary schools of Bengal taught very little beyond Bangla, arithmetic and Sanskrit. The tols (local small schools run by individuals) gave lessons in advanced Sanskrit, grammar and literature, theology, logic and metaphysics. But the tols were far far away from the villages. This was not enough to satisfy the aspiration few likeminded village people who felt that without any local school would only 'load the minds of youths with darkness and illiteracy. The necessity of learning modern education was also felt by people who had to have interaction with the modern India. A few schools were set up with the purpose of providing rudimentary education to native Indians. Moukhali Gopinathpur Dharmadas M.E. School was one of them.
