SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated television series created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. The series chronicles the adventures and endeavors of the title character and his various friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Many of the ideas for the show originated in an unpublished, educational comic book titled The Intertidal Zone, which Hillenburg created in the mid-1980s. He began developing SpongeBob SquarePants into a television series in 1996 upon the cancellation of Rocko's Modern Life, another Nickelodeon animated series which Hillenburg previously directed.[1][2] The series' popularity has made it a media franchise, as well as Nickelodeon network's highest rated show, and the most distributed property of MTV Networks. The media franchise has generated $8 billion in merchandising revenue for Nickelodeon.[3] Main character SpongeBob SquarePants first appeared in video game form in 2000, with the release of Nicktoons Racing, a crossover racing video game developed by Software Creations. SpongeBob SquarePants has since been adapted into its own line of video games for home consoles, handheld game consoles, arcades, and personal computers, although the show's characters have also been featured in other crossover video games. Several companies have developed entries in the show's video game franchise, including AWE Games, Blitz Games, Heavy Iron Studios, Vicarious Visions and WayForward Technologies. The now defunct American video game developer and publisher THQ published most of the franchise's video games until 2011's SpongeBob's Surf & Skate Roadtrip. It backed out from publishing SpongeBob SquarePants titles after deciding to focus "instead on its own core video game franchises and digital initiatives."[4] Since then, Nickelodeon partnered with Activision to publish games based on the show.[5]
SpongeBob SquarePants' first video game release, Legend of the Lost Spatula, developed by Vicarious Visions, was released solely on Game Boy Color, while 2001's SuperSponge, developed by Climax Group, introduced the franchise into new platforms, including Game Boy Advance and PlayStation. Additionally, many of the video games were released exclusively on one console, such as PC's SpongeBob SquarePants: Operation Krabby Patty (2001) and Employee of the Month (2002), and Nintendo DS' Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition (2008) and SpongeBob vs. The Big One: Beach Party Cook-Off (2009).
