User:Proteins/Cheatsheet tutorial

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It can be hard at first to remember the various methods for formatting Wikipedia text: how to make words italic or subscripted, how to make tables and lists, or how to add images and references. The toolbar of 22 edit buttons can help with some of these tasks, but Wikipedia also provides a "cheatsheet" with common editing tasks. Here are four methods for finding this cheatsheet.

A video of this tutorial has been made.

Download it to your computer

[edit]

The simplest approach is to download a PDF of the cheatsheet onto your computer. The following link leads to the English version:

Click on "Editing help" next to the edit summary

Clicking on the "Editing help" link opens a new window with the cheatsheet.

The simplest approach while on Wikipedia is to click on the "Editing help" link next to the Edit-summary window. (For instructions on how to get to an editing window, see this earlier tutorial.) Clicking on this link opens the cheatsheet in a separate window or tab of your browser. It doesn't interfere with what you're working on at the moment.

How to find the cheatsheet using the Search box.

Can you remember the phrase "WP:CHEAT"? If so, type that into the Search box and click on Go; you'll be taken to the cheatsheet page. You might want to do that in a separate window, to avoid losing your present window.

[edit]

If you forget these shortcuts, you can always click on the "Help" button in the left-hand column. That takes you to the Help page, where you'll find a direct link to the cheatsheet, listed under "Editing Wikipedia".
