Bio

Hello, thank you for visiting my user page, I am a student living the the Pacific Northwest and attending Everett Community College while in high school through a program called running start. I enjoy many sports including wrestling, and track and field. In track and field my favorite event is pole vault but I also have run hurdles and the decathlon. Living in the Pacific Northwest has given me a great appreciation for the outdoors and I love hiking, camping, and backpacking. I enjoy reading fiction books but like math and science subjects also especially in the field of engineering.

I will use Wikipedia as a source for many writing topics in my writing classes. As mentioned earlier I enjoy engineering, I also hope to use this site to learn more about this. I am especially interested automotive and aerospace engineering so I hope to acquire more knowledge about these subjects. also hope to use Wikipedia to help me learn more about the sports I do, especially pole vaulting.

Pole vault Wikipedia page evaluation

Can you imagine running down a 100 foot runway with a 17 foot long pole, and attempting to launch yourself 20 feet in the air? This event is called pole vault The main goal of this track and field event is to launch yourself as high as you can using a long pole and return safely onto a padded mat. Most people wouldn't even dream of doing such an activity but some do and love it. As one of those people I visited the Pole vault page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: its use of citations, its modernity, and its use of photographs.

Citations

The page has many good citations and includes active links at the bottom.. For example, while explaining the history and material of poles, the citation links to a newspaper known as the Ocala Star Banner, although not a well known paper this source was valid and helped to prove the articles facts. Other times though the article states a fact without support or citation, one example of this is while explaining a "jump-off" there is no evidence that what is written is from a valid source. So while the page does have several good citations, it could improve.

Modernity

The facts and information appears to be up to date. For example, the page keeps a comprehensive list of the all-time best vaulters in both the mens and the womens pole vault. During the world championships in Doha, one of the biggest pole vaulting competitions in the world, one female competitor, named Anzhelika Sidorova moved up on the list to the #4 all-time world record holder in the womens pole vault and within 72 hours of this vault the Wikipedia list was updated. This shows that the page is extremely up to date.

Photography

Pole vault is an extremely hard sport to photograph, with the entire vault lasting only a few seconds and going through several movements it’s easy to tell why. That being said the Wikipedia page does not have very good photos of pole vaulters. One example is in the section entitled "Technique" there are six phases of the vault listed on the left and only five phases illustrated on the right, several of them not matching what was described. This shows that although this is a very strong page, the photographs don’t match what is written.

Summary

Overall I'd give this page a B+ with a few minor fixes, including adding more citations and better pictures, this could be a very strong and resourceful page. Overall the article does a very good job of staying modern and with complete citations and better pictures could be an astounding page.
