Life and career
[edit]Lynching and legacy
[edit]On December 4, 1947, near Lowndesboro, Alabama, Bolling was fatally shot by Clarke Luckie, a white man and an assistant to Bolling.[1][2] Bolling's body was found in a ditch off U.S. Route 80. The operator of the funeral home in Montgomery where Bolling's body was delivered stated that Bolling was shot seven times: six with a pistol and one with a shotgun in the back. Luckie was arrested and charged with murder on December 6, soon being released under a $2,500 bond.[2] According to Luckie, Bolling had berated his wife over the telephone; Luckie was never formally indicted or charged by a grand jury.[1]
A jar containing soil from the lynching site of Bolling is on display at Equal Justice Initiative offices in Montgomery, Alabama.[1]
