The Conquest of the Morea refers to the two conflicts between the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Mehmed II and the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea, led by Demetrios and Thomas Palaiologos from 1458 to 1461. The conflicts were caused by a failure of the Moreot leadership to pay the tribute they owed to the Ottomans, as well as concerns of Thomas' increasing overtures to the western powers. The Morea's annexation resulted in the final end of Palaiologan Byzantine rule, and with the Fall of Trebizond in 1461, marked the final collapse of Byzantine political authority.
