Social Benefit Organization is the name many organizations are choosing to use instead of the previously preferred "non-profit" and "non-governmental" organization. "Civil society" is also a term that some prefer. The shift away from the terms "non-profit" and non-governmental comes from the fact that these are negative terms for organizations that have a positive social purpose that is related to but independent of government.
