From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You have reached this page because anonymous editing from your IP address has been disabled by an administrator. Generally, this is due to repeated acts of vandalism, spamming, or other unacceptable edits originating from this IP.

It is possible that you are not the person who engaged in this behavior, since network address translation allows many users (sometimes an entire university or company) to share a single IP address. If you intend to edit in accordance with our policies, there are several options for you to be allowed to edit even when others on your network misbehave.

Create an account

[edit]

The simplest and easiest way for you to continue to edit is to create an account. Creating an account need not compromise your anonymity, and may actually enhance it, since edits without an account are attributed to your IP address, and IP addresses are to some degree traceable. The IP addresses of edits from an account are visible only to a handful of users with the checkuser privilege, and checkusers are permitted to use this ability only when there are reasonable grounds to suspect abuse or sockpuppetry.

You may wish to review the username policy prior to creating an account.

Request an account

[edit]

If a large number of sock puppet or otherwise abusive accounts are being created from an IP address, account creation from that IP address may be disabled along with anonymous editing. If this is the case, you have two options:

  • Create an account from a different location where account creation is not disabled. For example, if your university IP is disabled, you could create an account from a nearby WiFi hotspot, a public library, or a home off-campus.
  • Request that an account be created for you. If doing the above would be difficult or impossible for you, you may request an account. Another editor or administrator will create the account for you to use, provided that the appropriate guidelines are followed. The account request form will work even from a blocked IP.

Request that the IP address be unblocked

[edit]

If you believe that the original block on the IP address was placed without justification, or circumstances have changed such that the block is no longer necessary, you may use the {{unblock}} template on the talk page of the blocked IP address. Please note, however, that if unacceptable edits were made from the IP address, it will probably remain blocked, even if you personally were not the one who made them. In this case, see the instructions for creating an account, above. You may also send an email to [1] to make an unblock request.

If you see a message indicating that your IP address is "autoblocked", see this page on autoblocks for instructions on how to request that an autoblock be lifted.
