You could interpret a number of these as Egyptian hieroglyphs, natural/neutral ideograms, or proto Sinaitic script. So how do you choose -- "Which one was the author thinking in?"

Dating the vessels that carry these marks can sometimes be done with great precision, but the marks are said to be often more ancient than their scriptors. So how do you date the symbols themselves?
