Bio
[edit]I (1988-present) am a student at Everett Community College, pursuing a degree in Graphic Design. Considered by some to be a Millenial, I exhibit many of the attributes associated with the title. For example, I have had over 20 different jobs in the pursuit of finding a career worth waking up for. My interests include, but are not limited to, books (mainly fiction), martial arts, world cultures (with an emphasis on languages), design, and food.
Wikipedia seems daunting, but I am excited for the challenge. So far, I have made one minor edit on the page for "Tribe", and I found it to be exhilarating. Although I would love to simply fix spelling errors and other such minor issues, my intention is to edit or create pages that correspond to my interests. The idea of contributing to a "living" website appeals to me, and I can envision continuing the practice after this class ends.
Article Critique
[edit]Having been a reader all my life, I have a strong relationship with books. The design of books, particularly the cover, has substantially affected which books I choose to read. I intend to become a book designer, and in the pursuit of some additional knowledge, I visited the book design page on Wikipedia and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: the lack of citations, missing information, and the editing opportunities.
Citations
[edit]Although I found plenty of external and further reading links, there are only five references cited in this substantial article. Many of the sections are full of interesting information, but without citation it is unreliable. More sources of notability with proper citation would improve the integrity of this article.
Missing Information
[edit]In addition to the missing citations, the information presented in this article is incomplete. To achieve a complete understanding of the topic, it is important that there be mention of the history of book design. Conversely, because technology has changed so much recently, it’s important for there to be a section on modern design techniques, including designing for E-books. There are other equally important sections that should be included: children’s books, influential book designers, illuminated manuscripts, and the relationship between print and design. These have not been addressed by the article in its current state.
Editing Opportunities
[edit]While reading through the article, I noted several minor edits that need correcting. Some words, even full sentences, can be deleted as they are superfluous or unrelated. I also noticed that there were some opportunities to rework the formatting. Some words are bolded for unknown reasons; some words can be hyperlinked; some sections can be broken into two distinct subjects. With a little bit of superficial cleanup, this article can increase its impact by a fair margin.
Conclusion
[edit]Although the book design article does a good job of presenting technical terms and information, there is a lack of citation that renders the information unreliable. Further in-depth research on topics that are missing from the page will create a more balanced overview of the topic. Editing the small mistakes found, adding citations, and including missing information will all contribute to a refreshing renovation of an important article.
