Soul City was a Radio Station based in Kingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The station broadcast on 106.8 to both sides of the River Hull.[1]

History

[edit]

The station started out as Soul City 107.5 in Romford, which is now Time 107.5. The name Soul City was bought from the owners by Roger Cutsforth, who at the time was the Sales Manager for the station. The name was brought to Hull, where Roger and business partner Mick Redmonds developed a brand.

So far, there have been three RSL broadcasts, each one lasting 28 days. All of the broadcasts have been based at studios behind Beverley Road in the City and have carried the tag line Hull's life and soul.

The last song played on Soul City's last broadcast was "Soul City Walk" by Archie Bell & The Drells.

Format

[edit]

The music policy was to play all genres of Soul, Funk and Disco music. This included specialist shows and features on R&B, Gospel, Northern Soul, Jazz, Reggae and Ska.

Below is the playlist for 7a.m. - 8a.m. on 6th July 2005:

Licence bid

[edit]

Although a unique format, Soul City was unsucsessful in its bid for the Hull FM licence advertised by Ofcom.[2] The company lost out to KCFM, another station who have carried out RSL broadcasts in the area.
