Hybrid system

[edit]

The HC85 series trains are equipped with a hybrid system, which uses electric motors powered by the rotation of an onboard diesel generator, as well “as onboard batteries which accumulate charge while braking.[1][2] JR Central claims that the new hybrid system will reduce fuel consumption by 35% and reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 6,000 tonnes over the double-engined KiHa 85 series.
