RE: National Insurance, Contribution rates employees

[edit]

A bit of background here. When I came to work on this article it was something of a mess. At some point someone had merged a related article into it, but the end result was an article with little structure, a lot of duplication and some contradiction. I tried to remove these issues and restructure the article to put the information in a more logical order.

In terms of the section in question, I just thought the information was a little vague. For instance the list of contribution rates by year stated the percentages but not the ranges of pay which they applied to. So for example the entry for 1995 - 1999 stated that the contribution was 2.00% on the 'lower band of earnings' and then 10.00% up to the 'upper limit'. Without knowing the values of these two thresholds, I didn't think it was particularly helpful. Basically it said that you paid 2% on some of your pay and 10% on some more but the reader had no way of measuring how much NI people would actually pay because of the unknown values of the thresholds.

The second table told you the difference between the NI threshold and the standard tax Personal Allowance, so the information in it only related to taxpayers who happened to be on the standard Personal Allowance, which I suppose has some value but I wasn't sure what point the table was trying to make.

These are just my opinions, of course. If you believe the information is useful, you can always put it back in. I won't edit war with you about it, I'm not that passionate about the article, removing the material was just what I decided to do at the time. Neiltonks (talk) 14:26, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
