My RfA

I really appreciate your support for my admin nomination, especially with me being a relatively new user. Cheers, OhNoitsJamieTalk 04:15, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you FireFox, for your kind support of my Rfa, and for keeping the fact that I'm Willy to yourself :D ! Should you ever need any help with anything, please don't hesitate to ask! All the best Banez 18:04, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Have you seen this?

[edit]

Hey FireFox I was just reviewing my block log to see if over my time as an admin I had made any questionable blocks to try and learn from them..Anyway I saw this user I blocked had a red name that is now blue... the talk page as well....[1] LOL Hope you get a laugh. I do have a question for you. Do you think the scores section or any section in the UPA project is hard to understand? What about the template I spammed you with is it easy to understand? Thanks KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 01:29, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA Thanks!

[edit]
Okay, this is perhaps a bit overdue, but thank-you for your support in my recent RfA! I passed with a final vote count consensus of (82/1/0), which was a lot of support that I really appreciate. I'll try to live up to the expectations; and on that note, if there's ever something I do wrong (or don't do right), please spit in my general direction. Cheers! --PeruvianLlama(spit) 05:11, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopedia vs 'Encyclopedia'

[edit]

82.143.162.72 17:29, 4 February 2006 (UTC)Whoever put the quotation marks around the word 'encyclopedia' in the Wikipedia entry seems to be improving the article, and does not seem to deserve having their edits undone. Wikipedia is more of a message board. I would describe any self-appointed profession in quotes. For example, the people who write the articles for the BNP's website are 'journalists' in quotes rather than simply journalists, a practice also noticed in the media. I would suggest the quotes should go back again.[reply]

Calling Wikipedia an encyclopedia is after all like calling the internet community of Lovely (cf. the BBC's website) a country, rather than a 'country'.

82.143.162.72 17:37, 4 February 2006 (UTC)Re. your reason for removing them: If they were put back but outside the square brackets (so the link wasn't broken), could they stay put?[reply]

Blocking

[edit]

Hi there FireFox. I've blocked a few of the PhilWelch vandals (I now see that the page has been protected), since his IP kept changing, I carried on the warnings and blocked on sight. Now, is that against policy? I'm a newbie admin, I think its ok, but not entirely sure. Thanks Banez 17:31, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wonders if admin rogueness is a good thing. Thanks for the info, I'll try to be a little more conservative with my blocks...Thanks Banez 17:37, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging Image:MGScricket.png

[edit]
Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:MGScricket.png. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. SoothingR 19:48, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. There is no source for the image. Have you created the image, did you take it from a website? The image description page is not clear about this. It has a short description on what it depics, it has a license...it perfectly follows the guidelines on those things. However, there's no source on the page. As Wikipedia:Uploading images states; the summary should include "brief description of what the image is, its source, and what license you are uploading it under". Otherwise..cya on IRC.SoothingR 19:55, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Unless that the photographer for that Maidstonian-magazine doesn't want you to upload this picture, yeah, sure, remove the tag.SoothingR 20:05, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Userarchive head

[edit]

I created this template based on your archive message, which was the following:

<div class=toc><center>'''This is a talk page archive for [[User:FireFox|FireFox]]. Please do not edit this page directly. If you want to leave a message, please leave it [[User talk:FireFox|here]].'''<center></div>

No, I'm not wikistalking you (just incase you might think that). I was looking at the recent changes under only the user namespace. The Neokid - Wikihalo Guiding Director talk 13:43, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Self-bio frenzy

[edit]

I just discovered a rather big lump of biographies on a non-notable/hoax/writing about himself-guy, rather than tagging them all for deletion (I don't have time to watch every move he makes, like removing the speedy deletion notes), could you just delete everything User:Cameronwerner and 85.212.23.185 has edited?

User Page award

[edit]

Congratulations, 49TL/Archive/February 2006! Your user page has been nominated for the Esperanza User Page Award! Five judges will look over your user page and award it 1-10 points in four categories:

  • Attractiveness: general layout, considering colour scheme and/or use of tables if applicable
  • Usefulness: links to subpages or editing aids, helpful information
  • Interesting-ness: quirky, unique, captivating, or funny content
  • General niceness: at the judges' discretion

But first, you must be chosen as a finalist. If your user page is chosen as one of the five finalists, you'll have the chance to win an award created just for having a great user page!

More information can be found on this page.

New vandalisms from 199.247.128.250

[edit]

I'm not sure what's standard operating procedure here. 199.247.128.250 seems to drop by about once a month or so to make minor juvenile vandalisms. You're apparently the last admin to warn him/her, on 25 January 2006. Several more vandalisms from this IP address have appeared since then. Please let me know on my Talk page if I should handle cases like this differently in the future. -- Writtenonsand 03:58, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your helpful response ("When a certain IP address is vandalising currently, you should report it at WP:AIV.") (I'm repeating it here in case it's helpful to others with similar problems.) -- Writtenonsand 23:37, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another Esperanzial note...

[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Cleanup note

[edit]

Hi. Thank you for doing clean up in articles. However, I would like to note that doing an edit for the sake of putting categories on separate lines, like here is, I believe, not that urgent. It also obscures one's watchlist, which causes more work when tracking articles. I would suggest that the AWB framework be used only for more substantial edits, and that the edit summary used be more relevant, indicating the specific task done in the given article. Wonder what you think, you can reply here. Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 19:44, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would prefer to reply here, if that's ok with you. About AWB then... I don't know if you use/have ever used AWB before, but changing the edit summary for each individual edit takes a long time and is very tedious. When you select to cleanup a certain category of articles, you don't know exactly what you're going to be cleaning up for every individual article. AWB is, amongst other things, designed to "perfect" articles, making sure that the Manual of Style is followed closely. So, if two category's are included on the same line, AWB is designed to correct this in accordance with the Manual of Style, as far as I am aware. If you want to ask about this more in general, or to ask why AWB is designed to correct minor edits like that, then I suggest you leave a message on the talk page of here, so the developer(s) of the browser will be able to answer your query, and much better than I just did. Thanks! FireFoxT ♥ 20:01, 14 February 2006

I tried to say that it is not worth the trouble modifying articles for edits like inserting a newline between categories, which has no effect on the page layout. That is to say, if you do decide to use AWB on a given article, I think it should be if you saw a typo, or wanted to fix a missspelling; meaning something which will make a difference in how the article looks like, and then it is fine if it fixes other things along the way. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 21:11, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I will comment at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 21:13, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

[edit]

Sometimes when extra vertical blank space (more than one line) separates paragraphs in an article, I delete the extra ones. But a blank line between a section heading and the first paragraph of the section does not alter the appearance of the article and does make it easier for the editor to read. I don't think you should be spending effort on deleting those. Michael Hardy 21:44, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I agree...V'day wasn't that different for me, either...but made a little nicer by your pretty, er, "handsome" signature for the day. (You only kept it one day, right? It was nice.)
