The page "Prison Sexuality" is vague and lacking subsections. I would like to expand this article to include the subsection of the social construction of prison sexuality in conjunction with media representation of the topic.

Media Representation: How the media discusses prison sexuality, and how the construct of prison sex affects what prisoners do. What percentage of initially "straight" people, had homosexual relations in prison? Do sexual relations in prison occur as often as the media portrays?

- "The notion of sexuality between women largely continues to make the general public uncomfortable, often resulting in a perverted image of women who love other women.Nowhere is this view more pronounced than in the public’s ideas about sexual behavior between women in prison." (Maeve) *is this a valid source?? or is it original?

- "Although precise estimations remain elusive, a commonly cited statistic among prison staff is that up to 80% of incarcerated women are sexually active with each other." (Maeve) *How does this commonly cited (but not testably true) statistic affect prisoner's expectations?

- "Clemmer (1940) introduced the deprivation model first, theorizing that prison sex occurred because inmates were deprived of a heteronormative sexual identity." (Gibson)

- "Historically, researchers have defined sexuality primarily through sexual orientation, arguing that there is only heterosexuality and homosexuality in humans (Paul, 1985; Stein, 1992)" (Gibson)

- "Some research focuses on the characteristics of victims and offenders of sexual assault, while other research addresses circumstances surrounding sex between inmates, again with a primary focus on sexual assault. Still more research focuses on perceptions of and attitudes toward inmate sex, homosexuality, and sexual assault by inmates, correctional officers, and administrators. Some studies address consensual sex in prison, though much of this literature has occurred largely within the last three decades." (Gibson) Abigailgillmore (talk) 00:40, 15 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think it sounds like you are off to a great start, I am just wondering how you will get the statistics for how much media vs real life sex is in prison. If you can find the stats for that, that'd be an awesome start! Dakotahimmelman (talk) 03:06, 18 October 2016 (UTC)Dakota Himmelman[reply]

If you are adding on to the media stuff, I think that examples of prison in media should be an example. Ex: Orange is the new black. Look up studies on that and other shows that portray prison sexuality if you are writing about the media. Dakotahimmelman (talk) 05:31, 4 November 2016 (UTC)Dakota Himmelman[reply]

I like your idea about how the media covers prison sexuality. I feel like this is a topic that is not widely explored and it will be a really interesting read with the right sources. I think the key component would be credible sources, and like Dakota had mentioned stats that can contribute to what you are researching. This is a really great start and you can tell you explored the topic and pieced together what would make the article come together and flow.199.107.209.77 (talk) 22:44, 18 October 2016 (UTC)Morgan Ludlow[reply]

Make sure, Dakotahimmelman and Morganludlow7, that you offer some more specific feedback on whether the sources Abigailgillmore presents here are to be considered primary or secondary, and to what extent you think they can help improve the page, taking into consideration WP:Primary.
