Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

If you have any questions or have any requests, please email me at james.hare@wikimediadc.org.

See you there! – James Hare

Nomination of Ashley Purdy for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Ashley Purdy is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ashley Purdy until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Squinge (talk) 12:16, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Wikimedia DC celebrates Black History Month, and more!

Hello again!

Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.

First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).

Now, I am very pleased to announce:

There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

If you have any questions or need any special accommodations, please let me know.

Regards,

James Hare

Request for your opinion

Good morning Avicennasis! I noticed you've edited the topic Jimmy Edgar somewhat recently, and was hoping to collect viewpoints on an aesthetic issue. If you had a minute to contribute to the discussion/vote on the infobox photo, that would be very helpful. Earflaps (talk) 11:11, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Fix double redirect?

Can AvicBot fix the double redirects from Ron Henley to Ron Henley (temp) to Ron Henley (chess)? I'm working to fix a situation. BMK (talk) 00:15, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

I'm mystified by AvicBots edit: "Robot: Fixing double redirect to RentPath"

AvicBots edit to IAfrica doesn't seem to make sense as the page was fine before and now is misleading. Having stumbled on what I see as an error, I effectively reverted AvicBots edit. Is AvicBot functioning OK?

I've now seen at Primedia history that a mistake was made when "Shortride moved page Primedia to RentPath: name change" that was later corrected-no sweat!DadaNeem (talk) 22:27, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Hello and good afternoon (at least it is afternoon where I am). I was looking at the Wikipedian firefighters category and noticed that you are one of the members of the Wikipedia community that lists yourself as being a firefighter. First and foremost let me say thank you for your service. While I myself am not a firefighter, I do work as a photographer with multiple local fire departments. I am honored to have firefighters as some of my closest friends.

I have been taking an active role in the Fire Service WikiProject and am trying to recruit more members to this cause. If this is something you have any interest in, please let me know? You can leave me a message on my talk page. Obviously there is zero obligation. An interest can be anything from helping out with a couple of pages in your local area to helping to overhaul major templates, and anything in between.

Once again, thank you for your service. Hope to hear from you soon. Stay safe! --Zackmann08 (talk) 17:49, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunate edits by this bot

This was an unfortunate edit. The term "modding out" is generally used far more broadly than its use in modular arithmetic. I've redirected to modulo (jargon).

Does this bot always "fix" double redirects merely by making them redirects to the ultimate target that was already there? It seems to me that that can be destructive, as in this instance. Michael Hardy (talk) 18:36, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

AvicBot "fixing" redirects

I notice that AvicBot has "fixed" all these double redirects after America was moved to America (disambiguation). But America (film), for example, should redirect to the disambiguation page, not the United States article, and there are about a dozen more. Would you be able to fix them, please? StAnselm (talk) 18:38, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Commonscat error in bot

How did Category:22nd century get {{commonscat|21st century}}? — Arthur Rubin (talk) 01:16, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

Fixed AvicBot checked the interwiki links on Category:22nd century, found that on ar:تصنيف:القرن_22 there was a link to commons:Category:21st century, and added it. I fixed the page at ArWp so this shouldn't happen again. I've also updated the corresponding pages at UrWp, UkWp, TtWp, RoWp, MsWp, MkWp, LvWp, JvWp, and IsWp. Thanks for reporting the error. Avicennasis @ 03:22, 11 Av 5775 / 03:22, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

Which wiki still has in-page links for Java (programming language)? --Izno (talk) 13:52, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

Fixed That would be ZhWp, UkWp, PlWp, LvWp,Be-x-oldWp, BnWp, and ArWp. All fixed now. Thanks. Avicennasis @ 19:31, 22 Av 5775 / 19:31, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

I myself write the plot of the article, so that is impossible that I have copied me in "revolvy.com", is more. This link get provided says "Content from Wikipedia under CC-BY-SA licensed." So I'm going to ask that you investigate well or at least a test that I I have copied from some website.--Philip J Fry (talk) 05:06, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

I am more than happy to be proven wrong and WP:AGF that is the case. Please accept my apologies for the lack of due diligence on my part. I see you already reverted my edit, so all is well with the article. Again, sorry. Thanks. Avicennasis @ 05:37, 27 Av 5775 / 05:37, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Jews and people of Jewish descent

Burma categories

Hello Avicennasis. Please could you move all the pre-1989 categories back to XXXX in Burma. The country was not called Myanmar at this time, and we name categories according to countries name in the year mentioned in the category (this is why we have e.g. Category:1978 in Rhodesia or Category:1979 in South-West Africa, not 1978 in Zimbabwe or 1979 in Namibia). Thanks, Number 57 19:16, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

(to Avicennasis) I think you might have noticed (the moves stopped), but it appears that you're only moving the talk pages, not the actual categories. Also, a couple of the talk pages got moved to "Bumra", not "Burma". -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 23:27, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Yes, the talk pages are first just because they are listed first at User:Avicennasis/sandbox5, which I am trying to process to fix this. The Category pages should be later in the list. The "Bumra" pages are purely typos, however. (I'll fix those now if they haven't already been fixed.) Avicennasis @ 23:40, 19 Elul 5775 / 23:40, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
Not a problem at all, I just noticed the moves and wanted to make sure everything was OK. -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 23:43, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

You can not move back owing to page history. Stop cut-and-paste moves. Refer to Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves, Help:Page history. Restore all pages histories. All of your reverting must follow Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy. Sawol (talk) 05:14, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

There's no creative content here. I'm sure basic categorization should fall under Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia#Where_attribution_is_not_needed. Avicennasis @ 05:19, 20 Elul 5775 / 05:19, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

I noticed this and have reverted quite a lot, but probably not all. I mostly left category redirects, but do not think the result is very useful at Category:20th-century establishments in Myanmar which looks as if it has a fairly full set of categories, but all the blue links up to the 1980s are redirects. The redirects may be useful for other purposes, so I think we should subst and then trim that century template. – Fayenatic London 19:25, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

I subst'd and edited that template, and now it has only direct links instead of redirects. – Fayenatic London 19:37, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks to Number 57, Niceguyedc, and Fayenatic london for helping me clear up this mess, and apologizes for my role in making it. Avicennasis @ 18:54, 21 Elul 5775 / 18:54, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

No problem, it was well intentioned. We're all learning here. – Fayenatic London 19:37, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

Intersex and transgender

Hi there. These two terms define different things: intersex for people born with atypical sex characteristics (a physical condition, see also disorders of sex development), while transgender relates to an internal sense of identity that doesn't match assignment at birth, see also gender dysphoria. A couple of recent edits including [1] don't reflect this, assuming that all intersex people are transgender. Trankuility (talk) 01:04, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Fixed Caused by bad links at DeWp and PtWp. Thanks. Avicennasis @ 01:10, 24 Elul 5775 / 01:10, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Possible AvicBot error?

Hi Avicennasis. I was wondering why AvicBot keeps adding {{Commons category|Lotus F1 cars}} to Category:Hispania Formula One cars. As far as I'm aware there is no relationship between the Hispania and Lotus teams. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 10:31, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Bad links at RuWp and UkWp. Now fixed. Thanks. Avicennasis @ 10:39, 24 Elul 5775 / 10:39, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Please do not replace the " commonscat " tags.

Please do not replace the " commonscat " tags. These point directly to the category - not like that ' commons ' tag that searches for a respective page. Thanks I'm so tired (talk) 14:36, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

Not sure I follow you. Any commonscat tag I've modified, I've left as a commonscat tag. I don't recall converting one to a commons tag. Avicennasis @ 17:51, 3 Tishrei 5776 / 17:51, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

Dry places in New Jersey

Following the "keep" closure for the CFD of Category:Dry places in New Jersey, I've followed the closer's recommendation and submitted a new CFD to rename it to Category:Dry municipalities in New Jersey. Commons categories

Please immediately stop your bot from making edits like this, for which there is no consensus, in the ongoing discussion. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:00, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

As the bot is currently active, I've asked an admin, at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive274#AvicBot, to stop it, pending discussion. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:03, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
I've stopped this task for now. The pending category deletion discussion does not affect the potential for broken links, however, and I see no reason why maintaining the template links should have any bearing on whether that category exists or not. Avicennasis @ 10:10, 4 Tishrei 5776 / 10:10, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. As you will see, that discussion includes proposals to make the template call values from Wikidata; if done, the bot's actions will be redundant. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:14, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
Valid point. We'll see if this can be done, and go from there. I will refrain AvicBot from modifying commonscat templates in this fashion, and myself as well. Avicennasis @ 10:19, 4 Tishrei 5776 / 10:19, 17 September 2015 (UTC)

Slow down a bit, please

Well done for tagging orphan talk pages for deletion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Đò Quan Bridge, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Red River. Question

Hello Avicennasis, I see you have been doing great work with orphaned Talk pages. Could you please let me know how you manage to find Talk pages without a parent page as I have always wondered if this was possible. Thanks, JMHamo (talk) 21:54, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

On wiki, a list is compiled at Wikipedia:Database reports/Orphaned talk pages from time to time. I also have been running this same SQL query on the database as part of AvicBot's Wikimedia Labs cluster access. Avicennasis @ 21:58, 14 Tishrei 5776 / 21:58, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

AWB problem

Please see Talk:Insider trading#Conflict of interest template added: No reason given. It appears an edit you made did something wrong with a navbox. Hi. Why do categories such as Category:Immediate children/ and Category:Immediate children/Cichlidae exist? --MZMcBride (talk) 04:23, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

@MZMcBride: At one point, they were on Special:WantedCategories for a while, and so I would create them as they popped up, based on existing categories I had found when I started. It seems like a good majority of those categories have been emptied, however, and could probably be deleted. Avicennasis @ 09:48, 6 Cheshvan 5776 / 09:48, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Cool, thanks. The empty categories (configuration) database report exploded in size recently and I was trying to figure out why. There's a thread on my talk page if you're curious. --MZMcBride (talk) 22:20, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

User:AvicBot/G13 and Google

Dear Avicennasis: I was doing a Google search and the tracking page above came up in the results. If that's what you intended, no problem, but just in case it was an oversight and you had intended the list to be private but forgot to add a "NOINDEX", I thought I would point it out.—Anne Delong (talk) 15:50, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Templates

A month ago the bot made this edit. I was wondering if it would be possible to have the bot leave a message some place that a template page is redirected to a article page. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 00:04, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. For the Election committee, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:08, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

List of non-books

Hi. Here you created a list of non-books in the Book namespace. Could you create an up-to-date list and/or let me know how you generated the list? DexDor (talk) 20:10, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

I believe I used AWB, and made a list from "What transcludes page (all NS)" to {{Saved book}} and compared that against a list of all pages in the Book namespace from the latest database dump at the time. You would need a bot or admin account to duplicate this, since {{Saved book}} has ~39,830 transclusions, and AWB limits lists creation to 25,000 without a bot/admin account. If you don't mind waiting, I can get one made within a few days for you. If you need it sooner, you can ask at WP:BOTREQ and I'm sure someone will help. This could also probably be done via an SQL Query using Quarry, but I admit I lack the SQL skills needed to figure that out. Avicennasis @ 11:57, 6 Tevet 5776 / 11:57, 18 December 2015 (UTC)
@DexDor: is this still needed? I can help with SQL. --Edgars2007 (talk/contribs) 10:19, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I'm still interested, but at the moment I'm concentrating on anomalies that can be detected using category intersection. That has some limitations so to complete the matrix I'm working on other tools will be needed. DexDor (talk) 20:39, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
