WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010

[edit]
English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.

Scrutiny of my block

[edit]

Hello Bishdatta, Since you are the Indian face of Wikipedia, I am writing this message to you. I had created the Hindutash article on Wikipedia and had added immense information from acclaimed sources in articles like Hindutash, Sanju Pass and Aksai Chin which was resented by inter alia one Fowler&fowler who is notorious for hatred and prejudice against India. Since he is influential, he has successfully had me blocked by his coterie of deceitful administrators on the basis of the allegation that I have allegedly caused disruption at Hindutash. I was not even properly intimated and these administrators "resolved" to block me with out including me in the deliberations. Though I am the only one who endeavored for consensus and Fowler&fowler and his accomplices only spurned my endeavour, as a perusal of the discussion page of Hindutash as well as my discussion page would show , and Fowler&fowler and his colleagues only were interested in making me just succumb and capitulate to their demands and their preferred version, they have made this sweeping allegation and blocked me and are not substantiating their allegation. When I endeavour for consensus, they have to assume good faith on my part and reciprocate my endeavour, which they did not, and if my adversaries were not cantankerously indulging in slander and vilification campaign against me, I would also not be hostile to them. The crux of the issue is that I was always ready to compromise my edit of the article and arrive at a consensus as a perusal of the Talk pages would reveal , but since they were not amenable to arriving to a consensus, they had to have me blocked by hook or crook in order to circumvent the situation for which they were responsible.

Since you are the Indian face of Wikipedia, I require you to peruse the pages particularly discussion page of Hindutash as well as my discussion page and restore my account and ask Wikipedia Foundation to take action against inter alia YellowMonkey , RegentsPark , and Toddst1. When I approached ArbCom, I have not received a proper response and they have obviously prejudged my case and do not want to take action against the corrupt and deceitful influential administrators likeToddst1 . The issue pertains to conduct of registered users and not about article content . In fact Ottava Rima raised many pertinent issues and questioned RegentsPark but was intimidated by Fowler&fowler
The issue is that when Wikipedia proclaims to be "a free-content encyclopedia project based on an openly editable model", free for all to edit "and anyone with Internet access can write and make changes to Wikipedia articles", and Wikipedia is made available in India on the basis of this assertion and it publishes articles like inter alia Hindutash, Sanju Pass , Aksai Chin, Kashmir, or Jammu and Kashmir which pertain to the territorial integrity of India and are in fact not at all openly editable and are actually the protected version of a coterie who will go to any treacherous lengths to protect their biased and prejudiced versions, and Indian Wikipedia Administrators are required to be subservient, how can we permit Wikipedia to be available in India. What do we have to do with Wikipedia at all? See how Facebook was banned in Pakistan. I, as a patriotic Indian lawyer will have to do something about this. I wouldn’t bother about these articles and would not blink an eyelid had Wikipedia not been proclaimed to be a free to edit encyclopedia. It is as simple as that!I am responding in this manner because I feel hurt, humiliated and indignant.
I don’t expect you to take every thing I have said in its face value. But I expect you to peruse the relevant pages and if you find that what ever I had stated is substantially correct, inform Wikipedia Foundation in no uncertain terms that this user has been wrongly blocked and he should be immediately unblocked and punitive action has to be taken against the deceitful administrators and Fowler&fowler. These rogue elements simply cannot be permitted to block me with out substantiating their allegations and simply go about their business as though nothing has happened! Wikimedia Stories Project

[edit]

My name is Victor Grigas and I'm a Storyteller at the Wikimedia Foundation. We're exploring new ways to explain why Wikipedia is so special and we’ve started a Wikipedia Stories Project, where we’re chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community, especially editors and active contributors in the movement like you. I'll be traveling to Wikimania next month to collect stories for our 2011 Fundraiser. While there I'd love the chance to meet with you and hear your thoughts about Wikipedia. We’ll have a schedule of available times for you to sign up if you’re interested, but right now, we’d like to make the initial contact to gauge your interest. Please let me know by emailing me at vgrigas@wikimedia.org or responding on my talk page.

thank you,

Will do, and will also alert some English wikipedia editors in India (there's a new list) in case they are interested. Bishdatta (talk) 06:04, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As usual, People hostile to the idea of India have taken over the articles. I do not understand their logic! First, they want to include Iran within the ambit of South Asia. Then, they want to merge South Asia and Indian Sub-continent! They are going berserk! They cannot reconcile with the fact that Indian Sub-continent is a geographical expression and has no relevance with Political boundaries whatsoever and it is not proper to say that Aksai Chin is sometimes included within the Indian Sub-continent! Hi Bishdatta. I was just about to start tidying that article - starting with the "recipients of the Padma Vibhushan" category - but I'll wait to see if someone tags the article for speedy deletion first. --Shirt58 (talk) 05:39, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I just started creating it - barely 15 minutes ago! Bishdatta (talk) 05:42, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My sincerest apologies, Bishdatta, for not explaning my initial comments clearly enough. What I should have said was that I was wondering whether one of my fellow "new page patrollers" would mark it for deletion, either not knowing or not caring what the Padma Vibhushan means. I think I made the initial comment to prove a point. While I am frustrated in many ways about Wikipedia:New pages patrol, I think it was wholely inappropriate to use your talkpage to express those frustations, whether valid or not. Again, I offer my sincerest apologies.--Shirt58 (talk) 12:10, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! Your timely warning pushed me to put in a couple of references and try to quickly establish notability and verifiability in some form, so just as well! :) Bishdatta (talk) 17:12, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Personal and Moral Rights?

[edit]

In a discussion with Jimmy Wales on the moral rights of the photographers and the personal rights of the subjects, he said "I think that the commons community has gone down a very sad and disappointing path with respect to ethical matters. My views on this are not new, and are well known. Our project is a grand humanitarian effort. That it has been hijacked by people who do not share our values is something that needs to be fixed."

We further requested him to bring this matter to the attention of WMF and make a resolution or something to force Commons make enough policies to protect our rights as a photographer and our commitments to our subjects. He replied: "I am just one board member on this issue. I will continue to call this to the attention of the board and staff, but I need help from the community to illustrate that this is a problem that concerns many of us."

So we would like to bring that discussion to the attention of every member on board. JKadavoor Jee 06:03, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Bishdatta (talk) 07:16, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please support the Sustainability Initiative!

Hi, Bishdatta! Please allow me to follow up on a project that was discussed at the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin a couple of weeks ago:

I am writing you to ask for your support for the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 250 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has recently passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Now, we are working with the Wikimedia Foundation staff to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

In order to demonstrate that this is an issue that the community really cares about, I would like to ask you to sign the project page as well. Thank you! --Gnom (talk) 18:59, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Karthika Naïr

[edit]

Hi, I'm Rosguill. Bishdatta, thanks for creating Karthika Naïr!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. The article needs some copyediting and section reordering to comply with Wikipedia's Manual of Style. Additionally, it currently has a lot of external links at the bottom of the article that are not contextualized in any way: consider shortening this list, and using hyperlinks describing the webpage (or just giving its title) so that readers know what these links are and where they are going.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.
