Help an editor?

Hi! I noticed that you'd nominated a page another user created. A lot of his articles need a lot of work and I've commented on his page. I know that you work fairly hard on articles in general, so I was wondering if you'd be willing to look at his articles, help clean them up, and generally improve them if possible. The articles in question are here and are by Roguebluejay. There is some assertion of notability to some of them, so I'd like to try to salvage what we can. • Hey there! Thanks for contacting me. Hope you are doing well! Unfortunately, I have had a medical setback, so I won't be able to spend much time online over the next several days. While I don't think I would be the best option to help right now, I'll check in periodically, just in case. Best regards, Cindy(talk) 05:37, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Continuing Dog Training discussion

Hi again, Cinda. Sorry to hear you're having health issues! Hope you're up to par (or better) soon! As you can see, I haven't logged into wiki in a few days, so I'm in no hurry with these edits. I checked the link for the history of the page and see your point about it being looked at more often than the talk page. After spending some time trying to figure out how to read the edit history, I can see that nobody has taken off my edits to the updated Behaviorist page and the attempted Certified Trainer page, which is encouraging that they have accepted my presence on the page. There is one last question or concept I had asked about that I am hoping you can, when you have time, think about again: The topics of Dog Behaviorist (already there) and Certified Dog Trainer (new, redirected)are not the same as Dog Training. Training is the "how to" part. the page details a history of the knowledge base of dog training. Dog training refers to how dogs learn and can be applied to all kinds of training, from service dogs, to police dogs and pet dogs. Dog Behaviorist and Certified Dog Trainer, on the other hand, define what a professional in the field is called, why they are called that, what their background and credentials are. To make it more clear, plumbing is how to put in, fix, design plumbing systems. Certified Plumber is someone who does x, y and z to earn that title. Again, Behaviorist was already on wiki as an article of it's own as a type of "practitioner of dog training." It wouldn't be quite right to just tack Certified Dog Trainer onto that page because it is a separate type of practitioner, but I could do so. The Dog Training page does not have a section on practitioners. I suppose I could add one, but it is already a long, meaty page. If you think that is the best way of going, I'll do that. Thanks again. This has been a very interesting and education process! Mmdogma (talk) 02:23, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

DYK for Khrushchev: The Man and His Era

 — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:03, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Congratulations on getting this article into DYK! I first encountered this book back in 2003 on Booknotes on C-SPAN. I noticed this on your user page: "I am currently (2013) enjoying a focus on creating, expanding, and cleaning up articles about award-winning books. Primarily biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs." Let me recommend looking at the Booknotes interviews lists (and Q&A) to see if there are any article-less books that you might be interested in tackling. (I try to do the same sort of thing with authors sometimes.) I added an external links section with the Booknotes interview on Khrushchev to the article, and I also put it into some additional categories. And, I did a search and tried to identify all the other articles I could that used this book as a citation, and add appropriate links to this one. So, we now have plenty of incoming links.

Let me know if you have other similar books for which you are working on creating articles, and I would be happy to see if there are things like that that I could do to pitch in. KConWiki (talk) 19:04, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Hey there, KC! Thanks so much for your comments and additions to the Khrushchev book article. I'm currently working on writing articles for the winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. My current article in development is bout the Lindbergh book. It's in MSWord at the moment, but I will likely upload it to a subpage today. Feel free to check in anytime. And let me know what you are working on... and if I can lend any support with sources or whatever. Have a great week! Cindy(talk) 11:06, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
  • I'll make sure to ping you when I upload the article. Of course, I welcome the collaboration. I'll let you add any external missing links. Or anything else that may enhance the article. Hope you have a great day! Cindy(talk) 11:51, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Cindy, I came across your user page today and noticed we've got some overlapping interests. I'm also working on improving our articles on Pulitzer Prize for Biography winners--I've currently got The Most Famous Man in America up at GA--and was thinking of taking on Washington: A Life next. (I'm about halfway through the audiobook at the moment, and quite enjoying it).

It looks like you've given this article a great start. I'd think all it needs to reach GA would be a few paragraphs on background--who is Ron Chernow, what motivated him to write this book, what was his writing experience like, etc.--and perhaps an expanded summary. Would you have any objections to my adding that and then nominating the article for GA under both our names? I'm happy to take the lead on the nominating process, but don't want to steal credit for your hard work.

Thanks for all you do, -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:12, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

  • I'm honored that you would suggest this. Of course, be my guest. I'm learning more each day about all the different Wikipedia areas of focus in writing book articles, so I look forward to having you take the reins and seeing how the article evolves. I enjoyed Washington: A Life immensely, as well the book The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo. Right now, I'm working on an article for Lindbergh, by A. Scott Berg and having a difficult time writing a concise summary. Hopefully, I'll upload it by next week. Let me know if you need feedback or have questions about Chernow's book. Glad to help. Thanks again, Cindy(talk) 16:55, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, the biography articles are tricky to summarize. I find it really challenging to give a sense of the particular author's take on events without lapsing into original research; on the other hand, just summarizing George Washington's life in four paragraphs seems redundant with the George Washington article. My strategy elsewhere was to rely heavily on more interpretative statements by the author in the introduction and conclusion, but I'm not entirely satisfied with that, since it then overemphasizes those sections. I'll have to make a note of anything similar I find by Chernow as I work through the book.
Anyway, I may not get to this for a few weeks still, depending on how long it takes me to finish the book itself. But it's on my list, so you should see those expansions pop up soon. I'll give you a ping when I nominate, and let you know if I have any questions in the meantime. Thanks again,-- Khazar2 (talk) 17:04, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
So I came to the end of my audiobook yesterday and was crushed to discover I'd, in fact, been listening to the abridged version (14 hours, as opposed to 30). Darnit! That's what I get for not doublechecking the library listing. Still, I got the gist, and expanded the summary. I made some other changes and nominated for GA, but please feel free to make any further revisions you'd like to. In all likelihood, it'll be 2-3 months before we get a reviewer. Thanks again for getting this one just about ready... -- Khazar2 (talk) 03:01, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 11:25, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

TemplateData is here

Hey Cindamuse

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Hi, I'm inquiring about the OTRS edits made a few days ago to this page. I'm not sure which edits were removed according to the OTRS challenge - did it have to do with Earls' work at Chrysler on an assembly line? I have a third-party reference for this information. Can I view the content of the ticket by using the number you provided in the edit summary? Chubbles (talk) 17:43, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

  • OTRS tickets can only be viewed by OTRS agents. The content was removed as unsourced, challenged information. You are welcome to restore this content if supported with a reliable source. Best regards, Cindy(talk) 04:37, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
    • But which content? The whole article is sourced to the Allmusic article, as already noted. I'll add a footnote to the Chrysler bit...I just don't know what else is wrong, if anything. Chubbles (talk) 19:39, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
      • Thanks for adding the inline citations. While Allmusic.com comes in handy as a starting point for music, it is not always factually accurate. And it is difficult to get the editors of Allmusic.com to make corrections to the errors on their website. A family member has stated that the Wikipedia content is not accurate. I removed it not based on the fact that it was a claim from a family member (which cannot be proven and cannot guide content on en.wp), but simply because it was unsourced and challenged. This request would have been handled the same way, if it was made outside of the OTRS system. As seen in reports through the RSN, Allmusic.com has been shown to be highly flawed. The website cannot be used to establish or support notability. Lacking the addition of reliable, independent sources, this article could feasibly be deleted. I would recommend working to establish notability through significant coverage in reliable and independent sources. If the content is challenged again, I will suggest that they contact you directly. If resolution cannot be made, I would suggest a 3O or dispute resolution. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact me. Best regards, Cindy(talk) 06:25, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

WP:GOCE invitation

Hi there. I wanted to drop you a note to see if you'd be interested in joining the Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive. Three years ago, you participated in our biggest and most successful drive ever and were a big help, copy editing more than 20 articles with over 20,000 words. We've made lots of progress since then, but have stalled out a bit now. We need more help to keep pushing down the number of articles that still need copy editing. The current drive is already halfway over! Please consider joining it and chipping in a few articles. Thanks for reading this, and I hope to see you there. —Torchiest talkedits 13:25, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

  • Someone has challenged the AfD, claiming that the band took the content and posted it on their website as opposed to the entry just being a copy of their website. The website is dated to 2010, but I have no way of really knowing if the content was posted on their website prior to that date. I really, really have my doubts about that, but I'm going to assume good faith and run it through AfD. I can't find any sources to verify the claims and I've also got a sneaking suspicion that the user is a member of the band or is someone that knows them beyond just being a fan. I should probably ask them outright and get that out of the way. In any case, I wanted to let you know about this just in case. If by some chance the page isn't copyvio, the claims of their music being in a museum (which I can't actually verify anywhere) would assert some notability so it'd be better to run through AfD. GOCE July 2013 news report

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.
