College basketball categories

Since you seem like a categorization guru, I'd like to ask a quick question. Should Category:Southern Miss Golden Eagles basketball players be Category:Southern Miss Golden Eagles men's basketball players? Thanks, Zagalejo 04:17, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

South Korea Flag Template

Hi there,
I've noticed you have been diligently correcting many of the instances of the Korean small flag I've placed in golf articles. First from {{KOR}} to {{KOR2}} and now from {{KOR2}} to {{SKO}}. I'd like to get this right the first time, so you don't have to continually clean up after me! If you have a moment, can you explain the differences among the templates and which should be used in which instances? Thanks very much for all your work. --Crunch 21:03, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Here's my guide:

• {{flagicon|KOR}} is OK if you only want to display the South Korean flag.
• Similarly, {{flagicon|PRK}} is OK if you only want to display the North Korean flag.
• {{KOR}} will display "Republic of Korea" as the country name for South Korea (although it is piped to the country article at "South Korea". Although that is the official English name of the country, it can easily be confused with the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea", aka North Korea.
• {{KOR2}} and {{SKO}} will display "South Korea" as the country name. "SKO" is slightly better, at least for the moment, because I noticed that the SKO flag shows up as bordered, while the KOR2 flag does not. I would not be surprised if the KOR2 template eventually disappears.
• {{PRK}} and {{NKO}}, both for the North, will both display "North Korea" as the country name.
• In football (soccer) contexts, use the following:
  • In scorelines for international matches, in which the flag is placed next to the country:
    • {{KORf}}, {{PRKf}}, {{KORwf}} and {{PRKwf}} will display the flag to the left of the team link. Use these when the Korean team is at home.
    • {{KORf2}}, {{PRKf2}}, {{KORwf2}} and {{PRKwf2}} will display the flag to the right of the team link. Use these when the Korean team is away.
      • KORf, KORf2 = Display "Korea Republic", piped to "Korea Republic national football team" (official FIFA term for South Korea)
      • KORwf, KORwf2 = Display "Korea Republic", piped to "Korea Republic women's national football team"
      • PRKf, PRKf2 = Display "Korea DPR", piped to "Korea DPR national football team" (official FIFA term for North Korea)
      • PRKwf, PRKf2 = Display "Korea DPR", piped to "Korea DPR women's national football team"
  • For inline references for the two teams, without a flag, use {{nft|Countryname}} for men's teams and {{wnft|Countryname}} for women's teams. "South Korea (women's) national football team" will redirect to the appropriate Korea Republic team article, and the same holds for North Korea vis-a-vis Korea DPR.

Basketball pages

When I made the moves, I was pretty certain that I saw that the naming standard for the College basketball WikiProject was to ignore the gender specifics. Now, of course, that I start to look for that same line, I can't find that reference. UNLV move

Hello My thinking regarding the move was that if the main article is at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, then all subsequent articles should be there, rather than at "UNLV X." It is probably true that the university itself is referred to as "UNLV" more frequently than "University of Nevada, Las Vegas," right? See also United Nations Security Council, not UN Security Council or UNSC. It really makes no sense to have the main article at one name and daughter articles at a different name. As an aside, and reciprocal food for thought, I recommend that you consider archiving your talk page; it's getting pretty long. PGA Championship match play era

Hello! I noticed you edited a couple pages and changed the writing in the results timeline. I think it is a good idea, as it does indeed give a better indication of their performance. Do know of a site that already has these finishes listed? I know that 2 --> F, T3 --> SF, and T5 -->QF, but for T9, T17, T33 and so on, instead of writing R16, R32, or R64, could we write the number of the round (as they do in tennis timelines)? For this, we would need to know how many people were in the draw, but I think it would be better to write 1R or 2R instead of the number of players in the round when they lost. • My first suggestion would be to look at the PGA of America official site for historic PGA Championship records. They may well have the number of entrants in a given year. — Dale Arnett 19:44, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
  • Since the worst finish I've seen on timelines is T33, it is logical that that would be a first round loss (1R). T17 would be 2R. T9 I think should be left as R16, because it is highlighted in yellow, and highlighting 3R in yellow seems a bit strange. So here's what I'm doing:

T33 → 1R

T17 → 2R

T9 → R16

T5 → QF

T3 → SF

2 → F

1 → 1

The field sizes were:

• 32 for 1916-21, 1924-34, 1942-5
• 64 for 1922-3, 1935-41, 1946-55
• 128 for 1956-7

Indigenous Australians

...is the generic name given to both people from the Australian mainland, who are known collectively as Aboriginal people (which is preferred to "Aborigines" these days) and Torres Strait Islanders (who are technically also a "small-a" aboriginal people). (Hence Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services.) So "Australian Aboriginal " is correct for someone from a mainland cultural grouping. And there is no separate article on them. It's confusing to outsiders, I know. :-) Grant | Talk 15:38, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

Dorothy Delasin citizenship

Thanks for noticing that Dorothy Delasin had been listed on LPGA with the USA flag icon. Actually she is an American, born in Texas and raised in San Franciso. She has dual citizenship -- something that the Philippine government gives out pretty easily (or more easily than the US government does) because her parents were both born there. That's how it was possible for her to compete for the Philippines in the World Cup of Golf. I've updated the page to reflect that. --Crunch 18:17, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Sub-articles

Yes one of the potential benefits of the table is to be able to update all the links by making only one edit whenever something is split apart from the main article of each college, or from the main sports department article, etc. This would have an even greater effect if also used in the infoboxes. Another strategy would be get a complete list of what all the sub-article titles should be, then deliberately link to them whether they exist or not, then create redirects wherever there is a red link. --fullcourt 02:53, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

For the 2007 Rugby World Cup WikiProject Rugby union is launching an Improvement Drive for national rugby union teams; specifically those participating in the Rugby World Cup.

Hi Dale, I'm considering running for adminship, but would like someone's view on this. You may or may not know who I am, but I'm quite a quiet editor, who gets about the "job" with little fuss. I wasn't sure who to ask about my potential being a candidate, as I've not really got any "wikifriends", but I seem to have overlapped with you on more than one occassion, and you seem pretty respected here. Would now be a good time to run - I think I have had enough edits and enough experience with AFD and the like, but am worried that my lack of "user interaction" (and maybe my lack of Featured Articles) may cause a problem. Do you have any suggestions? Do you know me well enough to perhaps nominate me? If you do, let me know before the vote starts. How important is having an FA to running for adminship? • My thoughts:
  • I have no problems with you running at all. I don't know how important having wikifriends is, but my guess is your activity in things like AfD will certainly help.
  • I noticed you put up an RfA page. I'll watch it for activity the next couple of days, and may put in my word this weekend.
  • I seriously doubt that your lack of FAs will be a problem. I don't have a single FA to this day. In fact, Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic is my first recognition in the GA category (I didn't create it, but I made it into a workable stub and others took it from there). hi, I have noticed that you do a lot of work on sports, I would like your assistance with something. An admin User:Yamla went and deleted a load of good quality football articles, see his [log]. A couple of observations and questions:

• There is a difference between Harvard College and Harvard University. I don't know if the difference is important; do you?
• You have nominated a university for a number of entries marked with "University uncertain". I'm not sure if that's useful. (e.g. UC Berkeley is not the only campus of UC, let alone not the only university in California. Also, wouldn't you put "UC Berkeley" rather than "California"?) Your thoughts?

• (1) You're right on the Harvard detail. Go ahead and change the "Harvard University" to "Harvard College". (2) I got ahead of myself a little. I should have looked at the reference tag. :) (3) Generally, "California" by itself refers to the Berkeley campus. Other campuses are either referred to as "California-XXXX" or "UC XXXX". As I said before, There is a difference between Harvard College and Harvard University. I don't know if the difference is important; do you?.
It would appear to me that you might understand the difference.
It now appears to me that Harvard College only awards "undergraduate" (for want of a better name) degrees, Harvard College is the only "Harvard institution" that awards "undergraduate" degrees, and ALL other "Harvard institutions" (only) award post-graduate degrees.

• As far as I know, the only unit of Harvard University that awards undergraduate degrees is Harvard College. By the time women became eligible for Rhodes Scholarships in 1977, graduates of Harvard's former all-female undergraduate unit of Radcliffe College were being issued Harvard degrees signed by the presidents of Harvard and Radcliffe. Starting in the fall (autumn) of 1977, women enrolled directly into Harvard College, and Radcliffe dissolved itself in 1999 and became a women's studies institute within Harvard University. On another topic, I did find that some of the people with two U.S. degrees got them from graduate-level schools (e.g., Mel Reynolds' Harvard degree was a Master's in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, and at least a couple others had earned law degrees before going to Oxford). — Dale Arnett (talk) 15:41, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

DYK custom

It is customary to use the hooks that are about to expire before using the newer ones. Ali Williams was expanded substantially on January 6th. Somebody complained about it. If I'm not mistaken, you selected the hook for the next update. This custom seems to be followed by others. If one skips to too recent hooks, the older ones tend to expire and don't get on.

Sometimes if the 5 day hooks are not very good, I'll select a 4 day old hook. I never pick a 1-3 day old hook unless it's really necessary. Madisonville North Hopkins High School

I think I would know if there is a dash. The website is not a reliable source. There are numerous errors on the website. In addition to this, the school was created as a merger between Madisonville High School, North Hopkins High School, and several others. In light of this, it would make sense to have a dash. Oklahoma State Cowboys basketball

I think that, even though the ladies teams go by the name Cowgirls, the article's previous location creates better consistency. If all college men's basketball teams are located at School Team men's basketball, there's no guesswork. Maybe the best solution is to move back to "men's basketball" until such time that the Cowgirls get an article. Age distribution

In the article on Montpelier, Vermont, you changed the description in the demographics from the canned wording to "age distribution," which I agree is an improvement. As you know the other awkward wording is all over the country in articles. While I'm not sure that "age distribution" is absolutely the best wording, it sure beats what was there before. New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

Sub-two minute times in Derby

Hi, Dale. At the Sham_(horse) article, it mentions that Northern Dancer also put in a sub-two minute time in the Derby. I actually don't know much about the Derby but it seems like you might. Is that true? The Northern Dancer article doesn't mention the times. Also Sham's page mentions that the sub-two minute time for Sham is disputable because of the accuracy of the timing back then. Hmmm. First, Northern Dancer's official time in 1964 was 2 minutes flat. Second, you may have a point on the issue of Sham's timing. Actually, Real DOES have more "Euroleague" titles than CSKA. ULEB, the body that organizes the competition, officially recognizes European Champions Cup titles as fully equal to Euroleague crowns. ULEB's official match report of the Euroleague final clearly states:

“ CSKA's victory over Maccabi at the Community of Madrid Sports Palace in the Spanish capital moves the Russian powerhouse into second place on the all-time list behind only Real Madrid's eight crowns. ”

3rd Liga

Hello, just a quick note on the qualifying to the new 3rd Liga in Germany. While you are right, Carl Zeiss Jena is already relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga, this does not mean the club has a place in the 3rd Liga guarantied. Financial qualification will also be necerssary, to my knowledge, otherwise they might still go down to the Regionalliga instead. I havn't heared anything about Jena not getting a licence but we may have to wait a while till we can say for sure who will really make up this league.
