Manx language - Orthography section
[edit]Hi Daniel,
I noticed you recently edited the Manx language article and inserted a piece of text from The Hobbit. While contributions are always welcome, we have to keep in mind that Wikipedia is first and foremost an encyclopaedia. This means that we must adhere, above all else, to two basic principles: 1) all information must be clearly referenced and may not be the work of the editor in question, and 2) must not contain any original research. The piece of text you entered can not be found online and I can not find any reference anywhere to a Manx translation of The Hobbit. For your text you will need to reference exactly where you obtained the piece in question. On top of that, there is a transliteration section beside it. Both of us know that there has never been (at least not recorded) any traditional Gaelic writing system set down for Manx. Even today, some scholars and amateurs alike have created several different systems based on either Scottish or Irish Gaelic. While there is no agreed system put in place for Manx, we can not put this into Wikipedia unless it has been created and published by a third party in a reliable and reputable document (website (respected), journal, book, thesis, etc.). Putting such a transliterated piece of text up on Facebook is a breach of WP:OR and WP:POV. You will need to rectify the section in question or it will have to be deleted. I have also left a message at Talk:Manx language#Orthography.
