Category Sort Letter on TV Stations

Hey Dhett,

Thanks for your note, and hello from a fellow Arizonan. Sorting by the second letter was discussed by WikiProject: TV Stations here a couple of months back. The consensus of the group was that people would have difficulty finding the stations they were looking for, especially since some were sorted by the first letter, some by the second, creating huge messes in some of the categories. I did not vote, but it was decided by the rest of the group that it was just better to keep the list sorted by the first letter, as that's intuitive, and something the average reader of WP would expect. I did recently fix dozens of stations that were still sorted by the second letter. If you'd like, you can bring this issue up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television Stations; maybe you can convince the group sorting is needed by the second letter, in which case I'll probably end up switching hundreds back to the new version... ;)

Happy editing! --Firsfron of Ronchester 02:24, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick response. I'm not here to make waves; if the consensus is no 2nd-letter sorts, I'm good with that. My life won't stop. Don't worry about correcting them; I did 'em, I'll put 'em back. I'm still getting the hang of the whole Wikistyle thing anyway; I've found a number of trangressions I've been committing. I'm curious about the Ronchester in your full name; you're not a former WNY'er, are ya? --dhett 02:47, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Welcome to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Television Stations team (I should have said that four days ago when you joined...). It seems like you've got a good attitude about editing, since nothing remains unchanged for very long around here. No, I'm not a WNY'er; sorry to disapoint. Happy editing! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 03:02, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Barnstar

The Original Barnstar
I award you this Barnstar for your contributions to television station articles in Arizona. TrackerTV 02:29, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

KTFL Flagstaff

Recently, you changed back the info for KTFL to prior the change, since it could not be verified.

If so, what's this?

http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/sta_det.pl?Facility_id=74149

It says, "License Cancelled"; if the FCC says so, then it must be true, unless there is evidence saying otherwise.

Know what? You're right. I misread the status date as 6/27/2006 instead of 6/27/2002. The FCC's publication of this list on 7/21/2006, effective 7/13/2006, led me to believe that the CP for KTFL-DT was still active, even though their latest STA expired on 7/1/2006. Apparently, it is not, as they have changed the station status from LICENSED to LICENSE CANCELLED. I have restored your edits, with a note explaining why. --05:51, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Singleton Applicant

In some of the articles for LPTV stations in Arizona, you've mentioned that they were "singleton applicants". What does the "singleton" part mean? -- azumanga 16:25, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

The commonly accepted definition of the word "singleton" is "alone". In each article I used that term, in the sentence following the phrase "singleton applicant", I explained that as a singleton applicant, the station would likely be granted a construction permit, "as there are no nearby applicants competing for the same or adjacent channels". Moreover, the link cited clearly states, "The following stations have filed applications without competitors in the area (singleton applications)." Although I believe that these explain what a singleton applicant is, nevertheless, I have clarified the definition in each article, KVOA, KESE-LP and K28FM. --dhett 19:18, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

KAXM

I never knew KAXM's construction permit and broadcast licenses were cancelled. I was only working with what sources i had. Which is why i protested its deletion the first time. I support it being deleted in this event. Raccoon FoxTalkStalk 10:31, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

AFD

I thought you'd missed the "(2nd nomination)" part off the end of the transclusion in the log, but looking back now it seems it has never been nominated before (prod doesn't count), so that is actually wrong. I'll fix it, but it may look broken for a minute or two. Yomanganitalk 00:35, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

OK, that's fixed - the instructions are a bit confusing if the first AFD you ever do is a second nomination. The {{afd2}} template creates a link to a page called Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PAGENAME (2nd nomination), so when adding the tag to the log you have to add pg=PAGENAME (2nd nomination) rather than just pg=PAGENAME . In this case it wasn't a second nomination though as only AFDs count (not proposed or speedy deletions). Cheers, Yomanganitalk 00:47, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Southern Greenlee County...again

I am on the crusade for three OTA cable systems (like the one in Duncan): Iron Mountain, MI, Iowa Falls, IA, and Duncan. For all three, I have looked at highly reliable sources and acquired partial or complete FCC listings for stations (the most complete is Duncan). TTV (MyTV|PolygonZ|Green Valley) 23:03, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I am writing a letter to Southern Greenlee County TV Association to finish the list, of which one is a CP and one a "NEW". One is even up to be an LD station! TTV (MyTV|PolygonZ|Green Valley) 23:29, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

What category would it go in, then? I had trouble properly categorizing it, because I assume there aren't many other notable in-house cable networks. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 04:07, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Usage of Radio-Info roundups

I feel it would be a good idea to use your Radio-Info Arizona station roundups here. I still had to change KMCC. TTV|talk|contribs|email 18:30, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, they sure would be helpful in keeping our station articles current. TTV|talk|contribs|email 22:14, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

G11 nearly gobbled KPDF-CA

Whoa. Somebody thought that KPDF-CA was blatant advertising. I removed it immediately, as it was NOT blatant advertising. In fact, I actually created the article under an anon, but it does not G11 anyway. User:Alan.ca was the source. TTV|talk|contribs|email 01:00, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

DuMont FA candidacy

I didn't have the heart to "Object" to the nom, but there were a few things I thought might need attention. You've done great work, and I think you're going to succeed in getting WP:TVS' first Featured Article! dhett 04:05, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your note, Dhett, and your very timely suggestions. I will be working for the next few hours to work your suggestions (and everyone else's) into the article. Again, thanks for taking a look, and your awesome suggestions. Offering alternate wording really helps, because I cannot often think of a good alternative. Firsfron of Ronchester 04:13, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the support comment, Dhett. But most especially, thanks for the small fixes and the really helpful wording suggestions. If you ever want to bring an article up to FAC, I will be glad to provide helpful suggestions, as you've done for me. Thanks again, Firsfron of Ronchester 09:38, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi David,
Thanks for your note. SandyGeorgia's main objections to the FAC seem to stem mostly from WP:RS. While I feel his/her interpretation of those guidelines was overly rigid, I can only shrug it off and start over. I've ordered David Weinstein's book, which I've been wanting anyway. I'm hoping I can use it to substitute out some of the current references, which were deemed unworthy. And I've discovered two TV histories at my college library which may also help out. Finally, there's a book at the local library I want to use for a single reference. So, while it was depressing to see the FAC fail, I am planning on reworking the material during the next week, seeking feedback, and then resubmitting when everyone feels the article is ready.
Your comments and corrections during the FAC were really helpful, David. You had some great ideas that were easily incorporated into the text. As I said, when you work on the text for a long time, you can't really tell what will be clear to the casual reader, etc. user:DCGeist had a great suggestion I had completely neglected: images. While they aren't required, it really would be good to have some. So during the next few days, I'll be looking for nice photos which can be used, and seeking permission for said use. Aside from decoration, however, the WP:RS objections must somehow be addressed if a new FAC is to succeed.
You ask what you can do to help. I cannot bring myself to ask you to do anything more than what you've already done. But if you wanted to do more, you would be very welcome. We Arizona WP:TVS members need to stick together. ;) Similarly, if there's something I can do as a favor to you, an article that needs work, or... I'll be glad to. Firsfron of Ronchester 10:08, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Local Personalities

Thanks for helping out with the debate on local personalities... I'm finding that it's become a touchy subject.User:Kerusso and someone at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Susan Peters (TV anchor) have taken exception to the AfD's... and it's totally not about the article / author / anchor in question; I hope we can all reach a good consensus that we can all live with. Amnewsboy 09:09, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

AfDs are always a touchy thing. I've been on the receiving end of a few lately, and it's easy to allow yourself to think that it's you who are being rejected - that your hard work is being trashed. I'm just not a big fan of deleting existing articles. I've written quite a few myself that today I probably wouldn't write, but I'd much rather see someone try to improve them and bring them up to standard if possible, than to delete them. I could sense Kerusso's offense even in his response on WT:TVS and my first thought was "after we spent some time trying to bring ideas to the discussion, he has a lot of nerve simply trashing them without offering alternatives." Fortunately, I backed off that sentiment before I put anything down on the talk page. As I wrote there, we may end up not coming to any consensus, but it's still worth raising the issue for discussion. dhett 03:28, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Translators

Hello, I was wondering if you could explain where you got data for Utah TV translators such as KUED/List of KUED translators. It's particularly urgent because List of KTVX translators was nominated for deletion. Cool Hand Luke 09:33, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

You're way too kind. As you can tell I was still arguing for deletion at the end, although only half-heartedly because I don't think anyone had the heart to see your hard work go to waste. I'm really impressed by the amount of work you've since put in (all those city links), so rest assured that if you're too tired after this ordeal, I can put up a link to this case on the WikiProject for future reference. So that no one will attempt such a deletion again. Xiner (talk, email) 01:45, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Ok, that's cool. Cheers. Xiner (talk, email) 02:19, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

100000watts.com

I need to get a consensus, would 100000watts.com be a good source to use for a reference in an article? Please let me know on my talk page. Thanks. - SVRTVDude 10:10, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

KMAS/KRMA

I didn't look as far as the applications...oops. KMAS, for the moment, is still licensed to NBC Telemundo, but will probably be turned over to KRMA pretty soon. Kinda funny, NBC-owned station airing Sesame Street:) When the application changes on the FCC site you or I can update the KMAS page. - SVRTVDude (Yell - Work) 09:44, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

The FCC has changed the information; I have updated the KMAS-TV redirect page, and the Rocky Mountain PBS article to reflect the new status of KMAS. dhett (talk contribs) 06:39, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Barnstar for your hard work

For your time-consuming-and-unglamorous work in formatting the data on the heroicly-rebroadcasted stations of Utah, I award you this TV Barnstar. You not only improved the articles on Salt Lake market TV stations (KTVX et al), but you ensured that User:Xiner's prior work on these stations would not go for nought. Very good work. Cool Hand Luke 03:15, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

That's intesresting. I'll have to look into that. Although Word takes regular expressions (which I used), that's clearly not what it's meant to do. At any rate, designing a useable table is what brought us to consensus, so thank you. Cool Hand Luke 14:50, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

My Mistake

Sorry about that....didn't think to put User:TheDJ's name on my post. My mistake. Again, my apologizes. - SVRTVDude (Yell - Toil) 04:14, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

KAET in Yuma

You've written:

Is there a reason why it is necessary to note that K19CX is owned by KAZT? Of the other 16 translators listed, only 6 are owned by KAET, and none of the other 10 list their owners.

Good point -- revert. -- azumanga 04:27, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Category nomination

You're right -- it appears to be a bad-faith nomination. As I mentioned in my response, the nominator is angry with me for nominating a bunch of toy listings (only listings of the toys, no real descriptive information) for deletion under AfD. He takes offense, and points out in his whine-fest to the remainder of that group that I'm a member of a WikiProject that is "nothing but lists and advertising" for television stations.

Of course, rather than discuss his issues with me rationally, he's opted for the slash and burn technique. Sorry for the difficulty. --Mhking 02:24, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

TV

Hey, sorry I'm not actually in that area, so other than about the logo, I don't know much about the station. I'm just making TV stations my latest little project. That logo is correct, or at least it was as recently as 2005. I found it on 2 different websites of which the TV station was a sponsor. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. I am Iamunknown; I already know you are doing. You've made an assumption about me based upon your experience with users who maintain stricter interpretations of Wikipedia:Non-free content than you do; one could question whether you're assuming the assumption of good faith. Thank you for the offer to come talk with you, I have relplied at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television Stations. --Iamunknown 02:35, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

KMAS

I was wondering when they were going to get around to updated that. I know the FCC is slow, but sheesh. Thanks, though, for updating that page. Many thanks. Take Care...SVRTVDude (VT) 09:47, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Jerome Parra

KNAZ- Parra doesn't belong on the page, he isn't a personality nor any more significant than anybody else to have ever been there.

Slander is untrue written word.

I understand your position but removing his information isn't vandalism. My prior edits were indeed and I apologize, however the addition of his information this page was done by Jerome. I would rather see him listed in a general manager category instead of personalities. That is all.

Also - how do I sign this page when I don't have a user account?

== I've been reading the history page and although I agree with you in regards to the vandal I hate to agree with him/her as well in regards to Parra being on the list of personalities. Is there significant information to commence a section reserved for General Managers? If not may I suggest we put his name on hold until a sufficient list of past management can be complied?

Images from the article Hispanic

I am sorry I can't help you, but the article Hispanic is not "mine". I only wrote some sections, and I did not write the section where that image is located. In fact, I did not add any image to the article. You can remove it if you want, it's just a logo, I don't think it's an important part of the article anyway. Onofre Bouvila 23:09, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Ahhhhhhhhh ok!!! I didn't know you were talking about the Hispanic subpage that is hosted in my user page... ok!! I had forgot that I had that page... I don't modify it since long time ago. Anyway you have removed it now, no problem. Onofre Bouvila 00:01, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

"Thanks for uploading the new KUTP logo - I like it a lot better. Please don't forget to add fair use rationales to images you add. The image police are really cracking down on non-free images in general, and logos in particular. I went ahead and added a rationale to this one, so it's OK now. Thanks again."

Thanks for the good words, and I have copied the free-use rationale template to each image. Rollosmokes 06:43, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Radiostations

KUAT's broadcast range

I'm trying to figure out how come KUAT's signal isn't the greatest in northwest Tucson (hence the need for KUAS). Only reason I can think of is the need to protect San Diego's XETV, the only full-powered channel 6 anywhere close to Tucson (according to FCC files, the only channel 6's in Arizona besides KUAT are translators for Phoenix stations). I added that to the KUAT article ... but if I'm wrong, can ya find out? Thanks ... Blueboy96 19:56, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Nope, it's terrain shielding. That's also the reason KVOA needs K64BV, KGUN needs K16EO, and KUVE-TV needs KUVE-CA. The four stations have their main transmitters on Mt. Bigelow, in the Catalina Mtns. NE of Tucson, but the Catalinas stretch all the way over to Oro Valley, where the mountains suddenly end with a very steep drop-off. Add the fact that Mt. Lemmon is W of Mt. Bigelow, and is higher, and it's easy to see why Tucson's NW suburbs cannot receive the primary stations' signals. KMSB, KOLD-TV, KTTU, KHRR and KWBA don't have that problem, as KOLD, KTTU, and KHRR are on Towers Mtn. west of downtown Tucson, and KMSB and KWBA are in the Santa Rita Mtns. about 30 mi. S of Tucson. Accordingly, those stations' signals don't reach NE of the Catalinas. dhett (talk contribs) 00:10, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Schedules

My apologizes, I didn't noticed your post until just now, please don't think I was avoiding. I proposed a rule change for newscast schedules, which was immediate shot down. Probably because I didn't do a very good job on writing it up. I also made an attempt to get the opinions of WP:TVS members on their talk pages. This was reverted (as harrassment) by User:JzG. A post on the WP:TVS talk page was never answered (I have since removed it). So, after my proposal being shot down, no help from WP:TVS, and being threatened and ridiculed by User:JzG, I felt it was best just to knock 'em out. Whether I agreed with it or not (and I don't).

I do, though, apologize if, in the process, information was removed. I am sorry. I will restore the information that got "caught in the crossfire" if you will, if you let me know where it is. I will be glad to.

I apologize to you, if I have angered you in any way...I probably have angered more people than just one. I am sorry. I was doing what I thought was right, by trying to fight the change and just removing them after I knew I really had no fight to begin with. - NeutralHomer T:C 08:01, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

I try to keep an eye on the speedy delete section to make sure any radio/TV articles are up or any radio/TV logos (in use) aren't up either. Most are easy to fix and logos are easy to add fair rationales to. But, you are right, most want to tear down rather than build. I am trying, right now, to build a better looking List of radio stations in Virginia. Since the current list is just horrible and some are left out. I made the current list for the List of radio stations in West Virginia, which looks awesome (if I do say so myself :)). I wish more admins and editors would help out in the same way, in other sections of Wiki. Take Care and Have a Good Sunday....NeutralHomer T:C 09:32, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

How do you know where on the dial the stations will be located in 2009??? --WIKISCRIPPS 07 SUN AUG 19 2007 1:51 AM EDT —The preceding signed but undated comment was added at 05:51:16, August 19, 2007 (UTC).

If you follow the FCC link in each article, you'll find a section of links at the end of each entry for that station. Follow the "Application List" link, and that will show you all applications that the station has submitted to the FCC. Then, under the file number, you'll find entries titled BFRECT, BFREET, BSRECT, BSREET, BTRECT, or BTREET (FRE, SRE and TRE is first-round election, second-round election and third-round election; CT vs ET is commercial TV vs educational TV). Look for the one with APPROVED status and follow the Application link under details. In the application, in Section II, you'll see the station's approved election for their ultimate digital channel.
So why do you ask? Did I do something wrong? dhett (talk contribs) 23:02, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Ktvw-tv-logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Ktvw-tv-logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 01:23, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Founded date in infoboxes

I disagree with your comment about the founded date in the infobox; see my comment here. DHowell 01:46, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

WTBS

Thanks for fixing that, it was hard to tell what was vandalism and what wasn't in that case. The edit in-between, [1], wasn't sourced, and started off with "thanks to a loophole", so it looks suspicious. I may research it later to see if it's legit or not. And hey, thanks for the excellent backup! Dreadstar 08:07, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

On-air dates of television stations

A good way to understand when a television station signs on for the first time is through searching the FCC's database located at http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_sear.htm and looking for the earliest instance of a "BLCT" (for commercial stations) or "BLET" (for educational stations). Television stations, when they sign on for the first time, fill out an application for a license and send it to the FCC.

For example, the local Fox affiliate here where I live, in Colorado Springs, KXRM-TV's earliest license is BLCT-19850321KH (see http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_list.pl?Facility_id=35991&Superseded=1). The first eight digits in the license number refer to the date the application was received by the FCC - in this case, March 21, 1985. KXRM signed on for the first time on January 22, 1985, two months before the FCC received KXRM's application - the FCC usually receives a new station's application for a license within a month of the station's first sign-on - or, since the advent of e-mail applications to the FCC, on the same day. Fair use disputed for Image:KTTU My Network TV Tucson.png

Thanks for uploading Image:KTTU My Network TV Tucson.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:17, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Recent KLDT editing.

Hi. Thanks for making some clarifications on KLDT. Ever since I can remember, I thought it was the same station that went off and on the air between 1995 and 1997.

Oh well, I don't watch KLDT anymore since they've abandoned programming from the late 90s in favor of infomercials. (Ugghh! I can't stand them!!)

Anyways, have a good day. Mbrstooge 21:04, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
