WWII image...

[edit]

I like the image, but it appears really dark. Would it be possible to perhaps lighten up the 5 montage photos perhaps? Good work though!  :) Wikibofh 22:01, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Same here. I left a comment about it on the ww2 talkpage. I seriously can't see what it is a picture of on my monitor. Shanes 22:08, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

One thing I noticed is that the globe seems to stand off from the rest of the pics because of the black space. perhaps if it could be rotated or a similar image that has the black on the outside. Same with WWI pic.say1988

Also, a couple more pics would be nice on the WWII front page.

Image, chat and stuff

[edit]

Don't take my sugestions into too much consideration. As I said, I don't really know anything about pictures and what makes a montage good. I just replied to begin with since that picture was basicly all black on my screen. But now it's so much better ;-).

Regarding chats: Yes, there are Wikipedia:IRC channels where lots of people hang out. I haven't been there much myself lately, though, but I believe you can get in touch with many dedikated and experienced wikipedians there.

Then there are lots of forums and projects here on wikipedia where you can get in touch with people quite quicly for oppinions and questions/discussions etc. For instance, I'd guess that Wikipedia:WikiProject Photography and Wikipedia:WikiProject Illustration would be of interest to you. Technical questions will normaly be answered quickly on Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) and there is also Wikipedia:Village pump (assistance) for general assistance things.

Hope that answers your questions ;-). Shanes 00:53, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Possible WWI image

[edit]

If you do one for WWI, I have suggestions, but I am not good with pictures and cant do anything more than tell you, so here they are,

The picture on Trench warfare at the subheading “Trench geography” or the one right above it would look good to symbolize trench warfare, which is one of the most important parts of WWI and well known, at the top of one (like D-Day on WWII one).
The image at the top of the Fokker Dr.I page showing a WWI aircraft (It would be better to have one in the air, possibly a dogfight, but that was the best I could find in a couple minutes).
Use of poison gas in World War I top picture of the cloud of gas, but it may be difficult to tell what it is.
The third picture down on the First Battle of the Atlantic showin gthe U-boat.
The picture of HMS Dreadnought (1906) at the top of the page, the dreadnought was an important part of the arms race in the buildup to the war.
The picture from Vickers machine gun because of the importance it played in the war
From History of the tank “Trial by fire and introduction of French types” any one of the three, especially the second and the third, french tanks, third pic run by US, or Tank “History” the first pic, british tank under German control
I looked for a photo of the assasination of Franz Ferdinand, which was the final item to start the war, but I couldn’t find it. Same with an image of the traincar where the Germans signed the armistice and hall of mirrors. I looked for pics from the eastern fron but there is very little on wikipedia. Same with Italy and middle east.

These are a lot more ideas than could be incorporated and some images are missing, eastern front, aftermath/peace, homefront, causes could all be included. I personally think this would very much help the WWI page. I would try to do it myself, but I wouldn’t know how. There are also probably better images, but this is what I found and should give you a good idea of what I think would be good and hopefully lead to some ideas of your own. I hope you do this, and thank you in advance. And thanks for doing the WWII image, it is fairly good, but I have made a few suggestions the WWII talk page. say1988 02:47, July 29, 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

There has been some discussion of this image. Can you improve the image (JPEG artifacts mainly)? LoopZilla 07:18:44, 2005-07-29 (UTC)

I am very thankful for your correction and nomination! On improving the image, I am however completely clueless. It isn't the original digital photo I uploaded, but will this be any better, since it is taken with an only 3 mpixel camera?
Did you process the image at all? Or is the camera producing "jpeg artifacts"? I am also an amatuer, and my partner is often the photographer. We are Atelier Joly. LoopZilla 10:03:21, 2005-07-31 (UTC)
Saved in maximum JPEG resolution is the mistake. No need for compression at all, Commons wants high quality and the file size is not relevant! LoopZilla 20:30:24, 2005-07-31 (UTC)

En dashes

[edit]

The en dash is used to denote elision in an element that forms a range, e.g., 1991–98. It is also sometimes used in place of a hyphen in a compound adjective when one of its elements is an open compound, e.g., post–World War II Europe. —Wayward 03:41, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

An em dash is about the width of the letter M. To be more specific, it's a typographic measurement: If we were setting eight-point type, then an "em" would be eight points wide. Em dashes are used to set off amplifying or explanatory elements, e.g., "My friends—that is, my former friends—ganged up on me." The em dash has a few various other uses, but this is the main one. —Wayward 23:22, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

DJ Clayworth

[edit]

Hi Dennis

Thanks for your comments on my talk page. I'm not actually as much of a contributor to World War II as you might think. It's an area I know something about, but I look on myself more as an editor than a contributor there. I see my task there to keep the page neutral and to keep its size down, especially to cut out anything too detailed and move it to a more appropriate page. With a subject like that I find there is always someone who wants some particular aspect of the war emphasised at the expense of everything else. In general I think the page is pretty OK as it stands, which is why I'm not that worried about the rewrite. I glanced at the rewrite and it wasn't that different when I looked. If it never replaces the original I won't be surprised or too disappointed.

Incidentally, if you are interested in WWII there are lots of article about particular battles and campaigns, even surprisingly major ones, that have very short and bad articles. It was only a year or so ago that I expanded the whole of the Italian Campaign from being a very short stub. DJ Clayworth 02:53, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OK, that was me not paying attention. All my comments above were based on the last time I looked at the 'temp' rewrite of WWII. The new version of the article is much better than the old. The straight-line chronology makes a big difference. Very good work. DJ Clayworth 13:46, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello. Those montage images you made for the WW2 and WW1 articles are very nice I must say. Perhaps you would be interested in making two similiar images with translated the text to Swedish ("Andra världskriget" and "Första världskriget" respectiveley), to be used at the Swedish wikipedia? That would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. /Jebur 01:56, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Collaboration Project

[edit]

Hi. Would you want to start Projekts in this and the swedisch wiki like de:Wikipedia:WikiProjekt Imperialismus und Weltkriege to coordinate the collaboration? It would be great. :) Regards, John N. 11:12, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The the main goal of the Projekt is to enhance the whole thematic complex and to create a Portal with Links in it. For example we work on a Wikibook of the Battle of Normandie and we are trying to get a high quality standard for the articles. I've seen your Edits in some articles like Operation Tonga and watched your Userpage. There I found, that you are interessted in WW I and II and so on, and dedicated to ask you. Regards and also good luck, John N. 10:50, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It would be also great, when you would like to ask other Users. Regards, John N. 10:51, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Do we cooperate? Regards, John N. 16:03, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I meant, wheather you wanted to start a project in this wikipedia and maybe ask some others of this wikipedia, if they want to cooperate (I don't know many interested people here, because I'm not here so often). I think the project shall be open for anybody. The Layout for example is not very important, the main goal is to cooperate between the Wikipedias and to coordinate the thematic complex. My English is not so good, to start the project on my own. I try to ask some Users in other wikipedias, wheather they are interested in international cooperation. Regards, John N. 11:50, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know a project in this wikipedia. How to start? For a start a site with some information would be enough. My English is too bad to tell you much about starting a project. But I think there should be some advices here. Regards, John N. 12:02, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Template:World War I

[edit]

Sorry for the late reply. From a quick glance the template looks good, and I like the idea of having similar looking templates for the two world wars. I don't know that much about World War 1, though, so I don't know how much help I can be. But if I find anything missing or see potential improvements, I'll edit or put a note about it on the template talk-page. Shanes 23:41, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WW2 Casualties

[edit]

I have made a major update to the schedule of WW2 casualties. I welcome comments and corrections. The data for Asia with the exception of Japan is from the works of RJ Rummel and is less reliable than data for losses in Europe that are better documented. My hope is that Wikipedians who read Asian languages can update and elaborate on the losses related to WW2 in Asia--Berndd11222 13:24, 24 October 2005 (UTC) Barney Dombrowski[reply]

Do you think D-day changed the tide for the nazis regime?

[edit]

hello,i believe that the soviet union by 1944 had absolute to take power to control europe without the help of U.S.A.I believe that the russians kept asking U.S.A. for another front ,because they endured a lot of combat and suffered a lot of causualties. When D-day happened the soviets were already took poland and started to march to berlin .with more than 200,000 forces led by marshal zukov that made the remaining 75,000 troops retreat to berlin .I can say that D-day till today is remembered as the finest honor of these courageous men who died that day.D-day led to liberating france and also led to the last german offensive Which was the battle of the Bulge, but still i believe the russians could of liberated europe with no help .

  • Hello, I don't know your name, but here is my answer: of course I think D-day changed the tide for the nazis. But not D-day alone, and not D-day by itself. And considering your text, I believe your question rather is "Could the Russians have beaten the Germans by themselves?" This is a quite interesting question, and I have thought about it for a while. Sometimes I also feel that the Russian part in breaking the nazis are too secondary when people talk about WWII. I am myself very interested in the Russian offensive on Germany, the "A-day" as it was called, and I warmly recommend the following book: Beevor, Antony, Berlin - The Downfall 1945, Penguin Books, 2004. It is quite enlightening and stunningly easy to read. But back to the question: Could the Russians have beaten the Germans by themselves? My answer is perhaps unsatisfactory: Maybe. But one thing is certain: If Germany had had no Western enemies then D-Day, the invasion of Africa and the invasion of Italy would never have occurred, and Germany wouldn't have had to concentrate on any other front than the Eastern. Thus it would have taken the Russians much more time and costed much more effort, and the outcome would be more uncertain. I am also afraid that it is more complex than this, if we look on the global stage: if I am not mistaken I believe the Germans wanted Japan to attack Russia instead of USA. If they had done this, Russia would have had two fronts, and the situation for them would be even more uncertain. So all events are intertwined, making the question hard to answer. If I must answer, I'd say the following: if it was ONLY Germany against ONLY Russia, I'd say the chances were 50-50.

Sadly, or rather gladly, we will never know the correct answer. Regards, Dennis Nilsson.

How to right-align columns in tables

[edit]
You can right-align all entries in the whole table by adding style="text-align: right;"' on the same line as the {{prettytable}}. I don't know of a way to right-align only individual columns. -- Rick Block (talk) 05:25, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, in case you're not watching Wikipedia:Village_pump_(assistance)#How_do_I_.28easily.29_right-align_columns_in_tables.3F, just thought I'd let you know that there is no easy way to right-align (or center) columns. It's not supported by the wiki-pipe syntax at the moment. You have to individually align each cell. See Help:Table. HTH --pfctdayelise 14:52, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

World War-pics

[edit]

The collages you made for the WW-articles were both very good compromises for lead pics, but the insertion of "titles" makes them both look like movie posters for Hollywood productions. It makes them seem needlessly gaudy and tactless, and brings on the connotation of war as adventure and entertainment. These pictures simply don't need to explain themselves and I would appreciate if you could upload versions that consisted of just the photos without any text.

Aviation art

[edit]

Wasn't aware new edits got del first. Seemed to me the note was important, & should be at top of page, easily noticed. I'd say leave it up. On another subj, it occurs to me we could & should create a page on side/nose art. Could also include the Stork of 12h Fighter Gp (Fr AF), the Hat in the Ring (17h Aero Sqn, USAAS?), & the like. (I've posted this on the French AF discussion page) Comment? Trekphiler 11:30, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Evidently, as usual, I'm not being completely clear. I had in mind a separate page for the art seen on military aircraft, such as the stork emblem of the French AF's 12h Fighter Gp, or US Army Air Service's "Hat in the Ring" squadron (17h Aero Squadron?), or the Ace of Clubs used by some German whose name I can't recall, or Memphis Belle, or the Bunnyhead used by a USN squadron (which I can't recall, either...), or.... Well, as you can see, it's an extensive subject. Any book on military aviation with illustrations will probably contain examples. It could get big in a hurry... My point was, take out some of the crud in other pages, such as the ref to Baracca & his cavallino (from the Ferrari page), & put it on a dedicated page. I've already posted comment elsewhere on edits I've done on Baracca; I'd welcome other input. Trekphiler 18:45, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the heads up on the aviation page; I hadn't found it yet. I'll post there; that was the idea, to get reaction. I probably won't contribute, tho; I don't know enuf, just what I've seen, enuf to suggest leads--or keep you honest... Trekphiler 19:56, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You have also written a declaration that the work may not be commercially used. This stipulation is in direct contradiction to the license. If I'm not mistaken, fair use would render your work pretty useless for all WPs except en-WP, as it seems to be a concept more or less restricted to U.S. law. I realize that it is not so known operation - so I agree that it probably shouldnt be in the template, but it isn´t so unsignificant as you wrote:) Heydrich was one of the most important Nazi - the youngest one and the most perspective one - and in the time of the operation Germany was winning in all the battle fields (this assassination was something like first (psychological) defeat. That´s only FYI - I know it isn´t the same "action" like Hiroshima;) regards User:Szalas

WW 2 Order of Battle and Weapons Production

[edit]

Hi Dennis:
I have done extensive work on OB and weapons production in WW2, including the German FHO documents in Washington DC. The files are all hand written because the work was done from 1985 to 1994. My work on WW2 casualties could be expanded to include an annual " Military Balance" from 1938 to 1945. In in format similar to the ISS annual report we could summarize the military and economic data for each of the major combatants. For example in Jan. 1943 what were the military forces of Nation X, where were they deployed. What weapons were produced and how many were lost in the prior year. What were force levels and how many casualties were sustained. If you have any ideas on future projects in this area please drop me a line.--Berndd11222 21:56, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am thinking of a seperate new page that would encompass the entire scope of data for the major powers US, UK, USSR, Germany, Japan & Italy and would include a summary of data by year in a format similar to the ISS Military Balance( I have been getting this for 36 years). One page that will summarize all the, OB, deployments, economy and weapons production for each year of the war including data on the losses in each major battle. This is a big project that will reqiure the work of serious folks that want to get the correct data and cite the sources. I wonder if other people on Wikipedia would want to work on this. Anyway the page on weapons production is hallow, real bear bones data with no sources.
61 years ago my father was with the US Army in the Battle of the Bulge. Today he is buried in the US Vetrans Cemetary in Long Island.--Berndd11222 01:38, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

what caused worldwartwo

[edit]

hi dennis do you know what caused worldwar2 and tell me who started it thank you User:4.237.41.22

Cause of WWII: The common view ties the causes to the expansionism of Germany and Japan; Germany wanting to regain the power lost after World War I and Japan wanting to become an Asian superpower. There is also an issue of natural resources; Germany wanted to become self-dependent by expansion into East Europe, and Japan wanted to secure additional sources of oil, iron etc. Furthermore, we also have a rather complex clash of ideologies:

Axis: In Germany, the Nazi ideology was very much based on a "Darwinistic" war of the races (the strong should defeat the weak), Italy had a policy of authoritarian Fascism and Japan had a militarist leadership with almost totalitarian control.

Allies: The ideologies of Britain and USA were very much in contrast to the Axis, since they were based on democracy, which included liberalism and capitalism. And to complicate it further, the Soviet Union had the policy of dictatorial communism. The "only" thing which bonded the Soviet Union with the other Allies, was that they had common enemies.

Very generally, one could say the cause was imperialism on all parts, with Germany, Italy and Japan wanting to expand their spheres of influence, and Britain, Soviet Union and USA wanting to defend their spheres of influence. Anyway, this is just a crude way to try to summarize it. For more information, I recommend the following articles:

Causes of World War II, Events preceding World War II in Europe, Events preceding World War II in Asia.

Who started WWII?: On which date World War II started is a debated subject; but the most common date used is 1 September 1939, marking the German invasion of Poland which resulted in the British and French declarations of war two days later. Other candidates include the Japanese invasion of China on 7 July 1937 (the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War).

I hope this crude summary answers your question somewhat. For more information, see the article World War II. There is much information and many links to subarticles.

My regards, Dennis Nilsson. --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 10:24, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

German Casualties in World War II

[edit]

Dear Sr.,

I am trying to find information about German Casualties in WWII, specifically the distribution of their casualties by fronts, or by theatres: how many soldiers/arms did they loose in Russia, in North Africa, in Europe .. etc. I did not find such distribution in Wikipedia so far, neither anywhere else. Can you help me please with this information?

Thank you very much. Alex L. User:AlexLinderman

  • Hi Alex and thanks for your message! It might be a little bit tricky to find this information, but if I were you I would check out the article World War II casualties, and see the references; there might be books you can consult. You could also place a message on that article's talk page Talk:World War II casualties - I know there are very knowledgeable people working with the article.

My regards, --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 21:04, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering, if you have an original (raster or vector) form of this image, if you could provide it in either PNG or perhaps SVG format? Either format should be significantly smaller in filesize than the JPEG currently used (and would also be lossless, whereas even at the highest quality setting JPEG introduces small artifacts). Thanks! —Locke Coletc 01:42, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Locke and thanks for you message! I have now managed to export my maps as PNG:s, and here are the links:

  1. Führerbunker.
  2. Vorbunker.
  3. Bunker locations.

Please tell me if there's anything wrong. I can also make SVG-versions of them, but frankly I fail to see the point of it (e.g has the standard good support?). Please tell me if you want SVG-versions and/or enlighten me about the SVG-format.

My regards, Dennis Nilsson. --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 23:34, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The new images seem to look fine (it seems you also made some minor modifications to some of them, but altogether the file sizes appear to be smaller). Regarding SVG, MediaWiki has native SVG support (and will convert SVG images into PNG automatically for people browsing the site). SVG is, as you may or may not be aware, short for "scalable vector graphics". What this means is that images in this format can usually be scaled to any size necessary with no loss in quality. Files are also generally smaller (or, if not smaller, compress better since they're XML/text). If you can provide SVG images, that would probably be even better than the PNG images. If you use (or can download and install) Firefox, you can view SVG images directly inside the browser to see how they look prior to uploading them (using file:///X:/filepath/filename.ext to access the local file; replacing the drive, path, name and extension as necessary). Let me know if you upload those as well. =) Thanks! —Locke Coletc 00:51, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Follow-up question

[edit]

Awesome images, I merely had a question whether the second room you mark as "Goebbels Family" represents Magda's quarters, or whether that's the (spurious?) third bunkbed? There were six children, yet Traudl Junge's interviews indicate there were only two bunkbeds in their room. Hoped you might be able to clear this up for me, thanks! Sherurcij (talk) (Terrorist Wikiproject) 23:07, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sherurcij, and thanks for your message! I would guess that the second room marked as "Goebbels' Family" (the one which is below the first and with only one bed) is Magda's quarters, and I would guess so simply because (1) the number of beds and (2) it would be most logical that the childrens' room is "behind" the mother's. My map is based directly on the hand-drawn sketch by Tom Posch (who visited the bunker in 1988), which I mention in my description on the image page, and on this sketch there are two beds in the "upper" room and one in the "lower". I can not directly from memory recall any specific details on the bunkbeds, but perhaps it might be so simple that the bunkbeds had three separate beds each, thus making room for six children? I don't know.
Anyway, if you are very interested in this subject I recommend that you try to get hold of the magazine with the article, photographs and sketch:

"After The Battle, No.61, Special Edition (Editor Winston G. Ramsey and researcher Tom Posch.)" The magazine is subtitled "The Reichs Chancellery" and "The Berlin Bunker Then And Now".

It was published by
  • Battle of Britain International Ltd., Church House, Church Street, London E15 3JA, England
and distributed by
  • Lakeside Publishing Service Ltd, Unit 1D, Tideway Industrial Estate, Kirtling Street, London SW8 5BP, England

It might be tricky to get hold of it since it was published in 1988, but it can be done - I got mine only two years ago.

Alright, well just figured I'd FYI you about Image:Goebbels-vorbunker.png which is used now in the article Goebbels children Sherurcij (talk) (Terrorist Wikiproject) 20:35, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cool! Just for your information: It's generally much better to upload images to Wikimedia Commons (unless they are very language specific) instead of uploading to the English wikipedia. Media in commons are made available to all other Wikipedias in other languages. Don't worry about the cut-out map, I've taken care of it, but I thought you should now this for your future uploads. List of people associated with World War II

[edit]

Yes, it has been deleted. I didn't know about it and right now don't have any opinion on if it was the right thing to do. But the page was deleted after this discussion and vote Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of people associated with World War II. It was deleted today (at 08:24) by User:Babajobu who was the admin closing the vote and deciding to delete it based on the vote. Reading the votes it looks like he did what the majority wanted. But this doesn't have to mean it was right. Many pages are deleted simply because the people voting didn't know better. If you want it undeleted you have to nominate it for such and go through a new voting session, but I doub't it will be undeleted any time soon, given the fairly clear majority wanting it deleted in the very recent vote.

But if you just want to see the content of that page, I can fix that by temporarely restoring it on some place for you to see it and get to the content. The page had had 488 edits when it was deleted. Shanes 21:55, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There you go. It's in your sandbox. You should edit out any cats and stuff that trigger listings elsewhere in article space. Shanes 11:19, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WWI title pic

[edit]

The Image is tampered with if it was you or someone else. In the picture, the bottom left frame with the gas masked machine gun crew has been altered so that someone's ghost image was inserted. There is also a Nazi Swastika on the biplane 14.2.06

Have you seen the photoshopped errors in your picture? They're not in the original photos, just in your collage version. I'm a little confused because I know you are serious about these topics, so I can't imagine that it was you who did it. Thought you might want to know. Kafziel 23:04, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot, Kafziel! No, I am not the perpetrator :) . At first I didn't understand what you meant, and it took me quite a while to spot the difference - the vandalism was very subtle and professional. Actually I had a laugh - a swastika on a WW1 plane and Bruce Willis in the trenches (he must have thought of the movie Twelve Monkeys). Anyway, thanks for notifying me! I have tagged the fake image for speedy deletion. My regards, Dennis Nilsson. --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 00:33, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Awwww...

[edit]

You speedy deleted my WWI picture? But I worked so hard on it! And you even got the Twelve Monkeys reference...

Now the challenge for you is: scour the rest of wikipedia and find my other subtle edits to WWI pictures. :)

Happy hunting! nsandwich 07:04, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vectorization

[edit]

I've vectorized your First World War pie charts, and marked the PNG versions as redundant in the Commons. You'll probably want to change them to the new version on your user page also. —Wereon 18:51, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bunker floorplan

[edit]

it is strange that the survivors of the fuhrer bunker could not have been asked to validate the floorplan! or that any building plans exist -User:SpookyMulder

The german organisation Berliner Unterwelten published today a plan of the bunker. It could be find here [2], by now it is only available in german, but may be it can help. Rochus Misch helped to draw it. --217.194.224.41 07:45, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your WW2 casualties pie-chart

[edit]

Someone left a note on Talk:World War II casualties feeling outraged over the ommission of Yugoslavia in your allied military dead pie chart. And looking at the numbers, it looks like Yougoslavia should indeed be mentioned. They had more military deaths than many countries now listed. Is it easy for you to make an updated pie-chart? I'm not sure if other numbers have changed since you made that chart, Berndd (aka User:Woogie10w) has made a few adjustments and additions lately, so checking the percentages in the rest of the pie-chart is probably best. If you have time, that is. I notice you haven't edited here much lately. Shanes 13:49, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Favorite Songs

[edit]

My survey has changed. I am now continuing my mission for the best songs, but now I am accepting all genres. I'm giving you a chance to revote for your top ten favorite songs of any genres (not just classic rock which is still the best). I've made a executive decision to keep the existing survey results and just add on to that with the new entries. My feeling for doing this is because classic rock is the most influential genre in music currently so it should be expressed more in the survey. Thank you for contributing in the past, and hopefully in the future. ROCK ON. RENTASTRAWBERRY FOR LET? röck 03:32, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Aesthetics

[edit]

You tagged aesthetics with a tag for possible inclusion in the next CD project, this involves trying to use "GDFL images" what does that mean? Is there a wikipedia page I can go to to see how to try to comply with this? Thanks. Bmorton3 16:04, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bmorton & thanks for your message! I am a quite new participant in the project,
and I am not an expert on copyrights, but "GFDL" means "Gnu Free Documentation License".
For more info you can see:
If you still wonder, you could always post a message on the CD Project talk page.
Furthermore, if you are interested in the CD project, you could become a participant. I think the project is a great idea, and I am
currently working on localizing and tagging important articles for the next CD version, which has the objective of containing the 5000 most important articles.

Dennis, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated having your photos of Oradour Sur Glan available recently. After having been there, during this past Spring, sans camera, I was having some difficulty in adequately describing the true nature of the place, and the related events, to friends who were interested in the case of Oradour. Your photos were a great help. Thank you. Bill Keith Lufkin, Texas

Cam you check Image:WW2 TitlePicture For Wikipedia Article.jpg?

Image:Arbeit macht frei.png isn't Public Domain, so I think the complet picture can't be Public Domain when one of the parts isn't Public Domain.

And for Image:Red army soldiers raising the soviet flag on the roof of the reichstag berlin germany.jpg exist a Deletion requests.

-- MichaelFrey 12:45, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up, Michael!

Generally, I think we should keep the montage as it is, with its new license as cc-2. I think it is highly unlikely that there should be any problems (but I'm no expert on copyright stuff). Rather than deleting this montage image, it is better that I make changes to it, if problems, however unlikely, arise.

ventilation system

[edit]

I'm a novelist, interested in knowing more about the ventilation system of the bunkers - doing research on Albert Speer for a possible novel. He supposedly planned to assassinate Hitler with poison gas introduced into the main ventilation shaft, originally at ground level, but found a chimney had been built four metres high around it. There's some confusion/questionability to the story, and I'm trying to form a visualized picture. Thanks for any information or advice, Lee Wood (author of 'Looking for the Mahdi' and 'Kingdom of Lies', if you want to google me for any reason.) email: robinsoncat-AT-hotmail.co.uk

Thanks for your message! I have sent you an email regarding this issue. My regards, --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 20:45, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Attempts to manipulate "real" history

[edit]

hi, rather than delete this picture it should be at the top "the key picture", as this represents the end of the Nazi, for which some 30,000,000 + Russiand died, taking thev full brunt of the Nazi war machine and destroying it, it represents the Victory of Mother Russia and the women of the USSR as well as the men of the Glorious Red Army who smashed the German Terrorists and this picture tells that story the Nazi beast is dead burned in the ruins of Berlin rather than face the just rath of the people of the FREE world. While D-day as Churchill said at the time represented "the step back into Europe" and the "Step over Hitlers wall", a major milestone on the way but not an end in itself. and as a footnote, It is not the vetrens of the USSR who spend their time wailing and lamenting their great loss or their hurts, but the current bunch of Neo-Nazies - the Isralie, who should no better than what they are up to in the Mid-East. When the Yanks retire from or are beaten out of that region we can expect serious setteling of old scores that a few nukes will not stop. Isreal has learned nothing neither have their co-religious around the world. [they lost maybe 10,000,000 or less than 25% of the USSR losses so why the perpetual wailing and the Germans based on personal experiance - Kassel - are no better]. Please move this picture to Key location. I suggest other pictures for your mountage. Rotterdam after the 1940 bombing by the Nazis is a key picture. best of luck with your attempts - you can never please everyone! -User:159.134.233.122

Hi, unknown! Not sure I get it, but I think you mean you'd like to see the Soviet flag over the Reichstag as the top picture. Actually, before I completed the design of the montage, I found that in my opinion the very best pic to symbolize the war would be the Soviet Reichstag flag - it is simply a great photograph! But there are some problems: the design works much better with the D-day pic at the top (it is wider than the Soviet flag pic). Furthermore, most people recognize the importance of D-day much more than the importance of the Eastern Front. Personally I think this is a little sad, considering the immense sacrifice of the Soviet Union. My regards, --Dna-Dennis talk - contribs 21:47, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

yugoslavia problem

[edit]

Can you please try to analyze the Yugoslavian casualties, because there is a 7 different nationalities in the Yugoslavia. - User:88.218.42.223

Hi, unknown! I am not sure I understand you. Do you mean the piechart with casualties? Well, if you do, then: If we split Yugoslavia into the different nationalities then the Yugoslavia casualties will fall into "Others", and then Yugoslavia won't be named in the piechart, which would be a little unfair considering the sacrifice. By the way, the same thing applies to the Soviet Union, but I don't think anyone would like too see a general piechart with all the different Soviet states individually listed... inclusion of Honey bee in WPCD - might need to shift to Western honey bee

[edit]

Hi. Just thought someone on the WPCD team ought to know; the Honey bee article was flagged as WPCD material, but has been restructured; the article is intended as a general article (I give mouse as a perfect parallel example article), but had been essentially overrun by content that was only appropriate for the Western honey bee article. The content that was earmarked for inclusion in WPCD has, accordingly, been moved to the latter article. There are 7 species of honey bees, and the Honey bee article is for the group as a whole, not just for the one well-known species (Apis mellifera"). This content shift is in keeping with the goals of both Wikiproject Arthropods and Wikiproject Beekeeping, and expect it will be kept this way in the future. It's unfortunate that the article was left the way it was for as long as it was, because a lot of links were made to that page that REALLY should be directing people elsewhere. It's going to take a while to get that straightened out. Dyanega 21:40, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Allied invasion of Italy

[edit]

Hi Dennis. In your recent edits of the above article in the 'Further Allied Advances' para you have implied that the defensive lines from the Volturno Line northwards were all part of the Winter Line. Now in the various literature there is a fair confusion as to what the Winter line was. Sometimes it is used as an alternative name for the Gustav Line, sometimes for the greater Gustav defenses including the Reinhardt and Adolf Hitler lines (currently the definition implied in the Wikipedia article on the Winter Line), sometimes it is all of these plus the Caesar line just south of Rome and its subsidiary Rome switch line!! However, I've never seen a reference which includes the lines south of these (ie the Volturno and Barbara lines). I've tended to assume the second option. If you can point me to a clarification of this I would be deleriously happy!! Otherwise I would propose to modify your edit to reflect the separateness of the Volturno and Barbara identities. Oradour-sur-Glane

[edit]

Dear Dennis,
My name is Steve Kemp. I am a freelance photographer and film cameraman living in London, England. I am just writing to let you know that I was very impressed by your photograph of Oradour-sur-Glane.

Were you just visiting, or do you have a family connection to the place?

Regards,

Steve Kemp, User:86.138.1.214

Dear Steve, thanks for your message! I am very glad you appreciated the
photo(s) of Oradour-sur-Glane. No, I have no family connection to the place - I was just visiting. I heard about the place by pure coincidence just a couple of days before I would travel to France and participate in the 60th anniversary of D-day. When I heard about Oradour, I immediately decided it was a place I had to try to visit as well. The town is a little "off-the-beaten-track", i.e. not in any usual tourist region, but I am glad I visited it since the place had a significant impact on me. Battle of San Pietro Infine

[edit]

Hello and thanks for the suggestion about the war box and campaign box. I did notice the convention, by the way, and it seems less logical than My Way (nice song!). It seems to me that the most general item should be first and then progress down to the more specific item; that is, Italian campaign at the top, specific battle beneath it. I'm not that passionate about it, though, one way or the other, so I'll change it to fit the convention sooner or later. I have to find some more information. Thanks for the comment. Happy New Year from Naples! Jeffmatt 07:39, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
