Hi again! You changed the phrase in the infobox the rest of the Greeks into Greeks. I'm curious, do you consider Pontic Greeks a separate ethnic group, other from Greeks? - Sthenel (talk) 11:53, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Revert war on Panathinaikos FC

[edit]

Hummmpphhh. I hope you are aware that you too broke WP:3RR, so I really ought to be blocking you too. Somehow I can't bring myself to doing that, because the other guy's POV-pushing and ownership attitude was so blatant. But still, you shouldn't have let it come this far.

I strongly recommend you try and hold yourself to a 1R/day rule voluntarily, for the next few months. Fut.Perf. 14:09, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Aetopoulo! I saw your comment on the PGG talk page and wanted to say I had seen the news report myself and the youtube video but haven't yet located any English language sources. Have you had better luck? I did manage two locate two news reports by Alpha but they are both in Greek.

http://www.alphatv.gr/index.asp?a_id=90&news_id=28823 http://www.alphatv.gr/index.asp?a_id=90&news_id=28843

Xenovatis (talk) 19:27, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know, I didn't expect that either and have the (paranoid?)suspicion that the news getting out in the first place was probably a failure on the relevant governmental department tasked with keeping a lid on such finds, of which there must be several. Nonetheless it would help to include it in the article if an English language source is found, even one just reporting on the Alpha report. I wonder though what Repousi will make of this. Probably call it συνωστισμός στην εκκλησία, not enough pews etc...Xenovatis (talk) 15:12, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if it's any help, but the turkish article is probably this one http://haber.mynet.com/sayfali/guncel/Samsun-da-toplu-mezar-bulundu/22Mart2008/A2203050/3. Unfortunately my Turkish is pretty poor and the only thing I can say is that it refers to the memories of someone's father about a church and the discovery of bones.--Giorgos Tzimas (talk) 20:13, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Giorgo thanks alot for the link and the explanation. I tried to get a machine translation http://www.tranexp.com:2000/Translate/result.shtml but it didn't really elighten much.

Village azas Competition Aydn however , " here grave okay someone bilmiyordu but skimmer kazdkça cemetery çkt. This place historic or even if having a knob or round head one each cemetery possible. skeletleri comrade edge total competent visual saying , but someone coming " saying subject. Çocukluunda iskeletlerinin çkt on the ground church okay adverb ªehriye Ylmaz even if , " father here situated church ykt , instead of school yapt. This place cemetery , but someone owner çkmamas and earth slip with cemetery disappearance ºeklinde subject.

Still this is much better and hopefully eventually there will be an English language article about it in a mainstream news outlet. How did you learn Turkish btw? I can speak a few phrases but it's mostly touristy stuff. Thanks again.Xenovatis (talk) 22:12, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I studied some in university, but I never actually learned the language. I dug up my dictionary today and the text says that a certain Sehriye Yilmaz (female name)speaks of a church with sceletons. The church was later turned into a school by her father (?). She adds that the place was a cemetery but it dissapeared because of land slides (?) since nobody cared for it. The insenuation is that this is no mass grave but a common christian church cemetery that went into disuse. The first four pages of the article give a detailed report of the discovery, but it's going to be very painstaking to translate them. A Turkish editor or a Greek competent in Turkish can surely do better than me--Giorgos Tzimas (talk) 07:47, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I went to Niko's signature shop and found a format that I liked, and then played around with the colours and the links. Alternatively, you can ask Niko to make you one and tell him how you want it done. BalkanFever 06:16, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, you changed your name wrong. You need to go to WP:CHU and ask them to do it for you. BalkanFever 06:17, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. Either request for them to change the user name (get your old contributions transferred to your new name in page histories), or just go and register the new name and start editing from there. Note it's either-or: as soon as you've done the second, you can no longer do the first. Fut.Perf. 06:33, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help guys.I followed both your advices.--Eagle of Pontus (talk) 09:08, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Εθνική Ελλάδος

[edit]

- Sthenel (talk) 12:51, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pontiaka

[edit]

You recently moved Pontic Greek to "Pontiaka". I moved it back, as Pontic Greek seems to be the normal English name for this language/dialect. If you disagree, please discuss on Talk:Pontic Greek to form a consensus. Thanks, --Macrakis (talk) 14:05, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You say "Who defines a normal name?" -- for a topic like this, WP generally looks to the relevant English-language scholarly literature as well as popular usage (to the extent it exists). My impression is that "Pontic Greek" is the usual term in the scholarly literature (used, for example, by Brian Joseph and Tompaidis in English-language publications), but I'd be happy to see evidence either way on the relevant Talk page.

As for Arvanitika and Vlachika, it would of course be as ridiculous to call them "Arvanitic Greek" and "Vlachic Greek" as to talk about "Basque French" or "German Romanian" (for the language of the Transylvanian Saxons). --Macrakis (talk) 14:45, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most languages are named by bare adjectives (English, Japanese, etc.). This is of course usually ambiguous, so the article titles are English language, Japanese language, etc. That would be an argument for "Pontic Greek language", except that there is nothing else called "Pontic Greek" on WP. And again, WP doesn't decide what to name languages -- we go by the consensus of good usage. Perhaps someday English-language authors will start using "Pontiaka" the way they use "Arvanitika", but apparently this isn't the case today. --Macrakis (talk) 16:29, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cyprus

[edit]

The article is obviously improved, but there are many things yet to be done. In order to have a "model article" read a FA country article, such as Canada or israel. Some suggestions:

  • The lead per WP:LEAD should be a summary of the whole article, so I am not sure if all the details of the third paragraph are needed. Read carefully the above link.
  • "A former British colony, it gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960 and became a Commonwealth republic in 1961. The Republic of Cyprus is a developed country and has been a member of the European Union since 1 May 2004. It adopted the euro on 1 January 2008." I think some prose improvements are needed here, so that the prose flows better. But prose improvements will come after all the other improvements are done. When time comes, I can suggest some copy-editors, and there is always the Wikipedia:WikiProject League of Copyeditors.
  • Do not overwikify the text. When you linke an article once, it is OK.
  • Be consistent in the way you link sources, using the proper templates (Template:cite book, Template:cite web, Template:cite journal, and Template:cite news).
  • Citations go after the punctuation. You are not consistent.
  • Have at least one citation at each paragraph. In "History" for instance i see some uncited paragraphs.
  • " Hamam Omerye, initially the church of St. Mary". Avoid external jumps like this one. Turn them into proper citations.
  • "Throughout the Venetian rule, the Ottoman Empire frequently raided Cyprus. In 1539 the Ottomans destroyed Limassol. Fearing the worst, the Venetians fortified Famagusta, Nicosia, and Kyrenia." Choppy prose.
  • You could improve the structure of "History", having sub-sections, but respecting also WP:SS; History of Cyprus is the main article, and the section of Cyprus should be a summary of it.
  • "Turmoil on the island was met with force by the British who started openly favouring Turks in police and administration as part of a divide and conquer policy." Uncited, and I am afraid that in WP:FAC or WP:GAC this could be regarded as POV. Cite it and try to have also the British view on the issue.
  • Always respecting [{WP:SS]], I think some brief mentioning of Zürich and London Agreement is needed.
  • "In 2004, there was a referendum on the adoption of the Annan Plan for Cyprus[17], but whilst it was accepted by the north, it was rejected by the Greek-Cypriots as they felt that it meant endorsing a confederal state with a weak central government and considerable local autonomy."n Is there any reason to mention the Greek reasoning? It seems like apologizing. I think just the facts (North accepted, south rejected).
  • "In July 2006 the island served as a safe haven for people fleeing Lebanon due to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.[18]" Try to avoid stubby paragraphs like this one. Merge or expand.
  • "Geography" is uncited. For such sections see a FA country article, and follow their example.
  • "Government" is also uncited.
  • "the social-democratic EDEK and the centrist EURO.KO". Is EUROKO still existing?
  • "The constant focus on the division of the island can sometimes mask other human rights issues." The prose looks to me a bit uncyclopedic.
  • Make sure that your data in "Economy" are updated.
  • "and Cypriot universities (University of Cyprus) ignore". Another external jump.
  • "Art" is tagged and stubby. "Media" and "Telecommunications" also stubby. I would expand it just a bit or merge it with another sub-section.
  • "Healthcare" is listy. Proper prose is needed.
  • I don't like the prose of "Transportation". Is "motorways" a separate subsection?
  • "International membership" is also stubby. It needs some expansion, and analysis.

It is up to you to do whatever you want with the above review, and place it wherever you want.--Yannismarou (talk) 11:20, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Επιφυλάσσομαι για τα άλλα άρθα!--Yannismarou (talk) 11:20, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, in case you want to upgrade the article to GA status, what you do may be OK, but, in case you decide to go some time for FA status, then you'll have to go through the citations, fix their layout, and proof-read them. Τα λέμε!--Yannismarou (talk) 17:07, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for your help in historical section of albania articul, what is you proposel can you state here and we discuss and then we may see who is the mediocre —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.242.30.138 (talk) 10:17, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First it wasn't structures as a history section rather a mess of unrelated sentences mostly about illyrians. Secondly it over analyzed certain parts and left others like life under hoxza post-communist albania, almost untouched. Thridly it didn't present any info about let's say who Zog was rather threw names out of the blue (the reader is supposed to net have a clue about the albanian history so the article must give him some info).

What exactly part of my rewriting is wrong. Did i state sth false? Grammatical mistakes?

I think it looks much better now and you and anyone who wants to, can improve it more in it's current format.--Ioannes Tzimiskes (talk) 10:29, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thessaloniki

[edit]

Thank you for your contributions to the Thessaloniki article. Statements supported by facts WP:FOOT are particularly appreciated. This gives credibility to an article. When we add unnecessary adjectives to a teams description, it makes it seem as if we don't believe what we are saying about them. When I say that "X has won a Nobel Prize" I don't have to say that "X, who is really really smart, has won a truly prestigious Nobel Prize." The caliber of people reading Wikipedia will understand that without my saying it. And why do I think I have to say it. Does "X" not appear very smart? Why am I having to tell the person that the award is "prestigious'? It raises all sorts of questions. It's just so much better to avoid WP:POV to start with. Thanks. Student7 (talk) 00:59, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We now have four editors, myself, the third opinion and two others who want the paragraph changed. We do not dispute your sports knowledge. We would like to make it more readable. Will you allow us to do that? We are not looking for a war here. Student7 (talk) 13:09, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey is there anything that you might be able to contribute to the Athanasios Papoulis article? Just asking. LoveMonkey (talk) 16:50, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are editors on the talk page explaining why they want a shorter sports section. (to summarize, there is a preference for facts over praise; and broad strokes over great detail). Also, your version contains grammatical errors and non-standard English. You simply must discuss on the talk page and stop reverting. Jd2718 (talk) 10:32, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please discuss inaccuracies at the talk page, where everyone can follow and participate if they choose. Jd2718 (talk) 11:15, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You need to engage on the Thessaloniki talk page. I understand you are angry that the words you wrote have been edited, but you need to discuss, not accuse other editors of being stupid, or of disrespect. And while you have not violated the letter of the 3 revert rule, you have clearly violated spirit. Jd2718 (talk) 00:32, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution.

You mistook my comment; I'm with you. I suggested using IRC as that's what Fut.Perf. uses to do his bad-mouthing and planning. It appears his old men @ SAVAMA are too lame to set up a VPN. Peace. 212.150.123.253 (talk) 21:40, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tzimiskes is lying, of course. Walnutjk was calling BF and other contributors "collaborators" ("tsirakia", in the highly negative sense of "political tools"), and saying that they together with me were "trying to distort certain things as much as they can". Clearly a personal attack. He was also speculating that I must be of FYROMian background. LOL, so much for their grasp of reality. – You see, Tzimiske, I do understand Greek, the point is that you should make it understandable to the others too. Lossky

[edit]

That is awesome news. Thanks LoveMonkey (talk) 18:51, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive me but I am pathetically greedy about this. BTW your N O Lossky article is gorgeous. I noticed no Greek article for Nicholas Metropolis. If there are, there is no Greek links in the article. I adore Metropolis' work aka the Monte Carlo method and his work on the bomb. He should receive the highest honors. LoveMonkey (talk) 04:23, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

3rr report on Thessaloniki

[edit]

I've reported you WP:AN/3RR#Ioannes Tzimiskes reported by jd2718 (Result: ) for violation of the 3 revert rule on Thessaloniki. While you have not violated the letter of the rule, you have been acting outside its spirit. Jd2718 (talk) 11:51, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PAOK

[edit]

I am just following the guidelines for the basketball clubs. It is for notable players not legendary players and it is for notable players in their own careers that played for the club, not for notable players JUST WHEN they played for PAOK. --Wiki Greek Basketball (talk) 14:33, 03 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Other PAOK sections for players can be added

[edit]

Notable players does not mean just notable in ONE country. It means if they are notable in ANY country and can mean for playing in college and other leagues as well. Also you are failing to see how the team sections are supposed to work. There are THREE different sections that can be on team pages for the players. One is Notable players which fits under how the PAOK page is now, then there can be two other sections also. One for players on the team that have played in the NBA, under heading, PAOK players that have played in the NBA, and another for star players of the team, which can be headed The stars of PAOK. The sections do not affect one another. If you would like to add either of these two sections please go ahead. Numerous other team pages already have them, most of the Greek teams just don't, although I think a couple already have the NBA players section.

Otherwise please stop telling me I'm abusing Wikipedia. That's ridiculous, seriously it is. Like I said if you want the stars of the team highlighted then feel free to actually contribute it on the team page, rather than spend your time here coming after others. Wiki Greek Basketball (talk) 07:07, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are 3 sections for a lot of clubs

[edit]

Many clubs have exactly that notable players, star players, and ones who played with the club and also in the NBA. If you don't believe me look at Maccabi's page - it has 3 sections for top scorers, notable players, and ones who played in NBA. In fact look at other Euroleague clubs look at Adriatic League clubs, etc. The Greek club pages are not some kind of exact rule for how all team pages need to be. How can someone ask

for a third opinion? I remember you did in our disagreement. --Ioannes Tzimiskes (talk) 11:16, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay responding. It was someone else who asked for a third opinion. The process is called WP:Requests for Comment, and while I have never filed one, the process looks fairly straightforward. Jd2718 (talk) 05:42, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Formation and independence

[edit]

Hey, I just noticed your suggestion from march 26th, 2008 on the formation and independence of Armenia and I agree with you. I took a look at the articles of Iran, Greece, China, etc and since these are all ancient civilizations and all of them stick with modern independence I agree we should adopt the same for the Armenia article. Kead-i-day!

[edit]

Hello Ioannes I need some help with my Greek source supposedly conflicting with Oxford Edition dictionary on Greek, pretty please Talk:Noetic Consciousness. LoveMonkey (talk) 00:05, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I hope all is well and as wonderful for you as you are and have always been. I greatly appreciate your most precious time and words. I posted in the article Noetic Consciousness that the word noetic in Greek is νοητός I provided two sources (the philokalia and the Oxford online dictionary) an opposing editer called νοητός erronious and also the two sources. Please clarify as my Greek is poor-νοητός is noetic and νοητικός means the one who refers to the noetic AKA an intellectual. The opposing editor states that νοητικός means noetic and that the use of νοητός is wrong and erronious. Since they are stating that intellectual is the same word as noetic. I am stating that insight (noesis) has many subjects, and that to address the subjects of the nous, is called noetic. This is how it is addressed by Kallistos Ware of Oxford and the philokalia for example in English. As far as I know the word νοητικός means intellectual not noetic. Tell me am I wrong here? Here νοητός would translate to Intellection-ic or intellection-ish. Not intellectual. As noesis or insight translates as the intellection of the intellect. You know a compromise could be to say νοητικός as intellective. But the other translation would need to stay in order to keep everything inline with gnosiology.

Greeks in Uruguay

[edit]

Hi Ioannes. Hope you are doing fine. I am a Wikipedian from Uruguay and lately I am devoted to the creation/edition of several articles relating to immigration to my country. There are a lot of Greeks in Uruguay, so there we go with these examples:

If you feel like creating the corresponding Greek-language versions of any of these articles, please, go ahead. I can help you understand any references given in Spanish. Regards from Montevideo, --Fadesga (talk) 22:16, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
