Things to consider adding to biographies

[edit]

On the main article page, consider doing the following:

 • Wikilinking to major institutions and major awards, such as Guggenheim Fellowship or Bryn Mawr College.
 • Add categories for the birth and death year or, for people who are still alive, . Example: , .
 • Consider using Template:Infobox person or an appropriate sub-template.
 • Consider running the "refill" (reference-fill) tool to clean up references. See WP:REFILL for details.
 • If you know how to add WikiData, consider adding it.

On the article's talk page, consider adding the following: for deceased people or for living people. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 03:36, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Envale. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Sumi Tonooka, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

 1. edit the page
 2. remove the text that looks like this:
 3. save the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Possible conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Envale. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

 • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
 • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the request edit template);
 • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
 • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
 • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 14:27, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm PamD. Envale, thanks for creating David Howard Pitney!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. When you list the books a person has published, please give the date, publisher and ISBN. If you use the ISBN template, it makes a link to a page of book sources, which verify the existence of the book - see my changes to the first book you list.

Proposed deletion of Lois Roth Award

[edit]

The article Lois Roth Award has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable award. Little coverage found by Google, for example, and it consists essentially of bios of people who have won one. Doesn't pass WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Status and Advice

[edit]
As reviewing administrator, I did not delete the article-- asserting multiple books (other than self published) is an indication of importance enough to prevent speedy deletion. But you need to add to the article or it will be deleted by our regular processof WP:AFD--themosti mportant thing you can add is substantial books reviews in published sources. DGG ( talk ) 21:11, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

and for the other articles you have been writing and about which you have been challenged, such as Robert Everist Greene,or Theodore Gamelin please add at least the publisher, and some more text to show the full careeer and importance. It's ok to write stubs, but you need to write enough to make the importance clear, even to people who do not understand the field of work. For the requirements for academics, see WP:PROF. For people in fields where books are the publications that show an influential contribution to the field, such as history, the name of the publisher is a good preliminary indication of the importance of the books. But reviews are what makes it indisputably clear.

Do not assume anyone isl ikely to come along in the near future to develop these articles further. We have very few editors, working in these areas. I'm one, and I try to improve an article from time to time, but it's only one of the things I do. DGG ( talk ) 21:13, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The wrong way to write Wikipedia biographical articles

[edit]

The article you created titled Michael Vogelius is exactly how Wikipedia articles should not be written. Contrast it with another article:

Christian Felix Klein (25 April 1849 – 22 June 1925) was a German mathematician and mathematics educator, known for his work in group theory, complex analysis, non-Euclidean geometry, and on the connections between geometry and group theory. His 1872 Erlangen Program, classifying geometries by their underlying symmetry groups, was a hugely influential synthesis of much of the mathematics of the day.

It doesn't start by telling us who is parents were, which schools he attended, where he got his degree, etc. _before_ telling us what he's noted for. The occasion for notability should be at the beginning; biographical details not directly involved in that should come later. Michael Hardy (talk) 18:29, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

 • I'd like to endorse this. We don't care where people grew up, that should come dead last in the article. We care what they're notable for and what coverage their work has recieved - so reviews of their books and interviews with them are important things to have as citations. Blythwood (talk) 13:12, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Articles you've started

[edit]

Hallo, I came across Byrd Gibbens while stub-sorting, and made a few changes to improve it. I then came across Vicki L. Ruiz and have spent some time on her article. Please slow down and learn a little more about how to write Wikipedia articles, instead of creating so many frankly substandard stubs.

Several points:

 1. Don't call something an "Official website" unless it is: for a person this will be either their own personal website or their profile page in their academic department etc. I've found Ruiz's academic profile page at her department. That's what I'd call an "Official website": you had an unattributed biographical article on the "Encyclopedia" website labelled as "Official website".
 2. Please learn how to deal with references. If you're only going to give the bare URL, don't put brackets round it (it hides it from view in the reference list, so we can't see (a) whether it's anything half-way authoritative, and (b) whether it's identical to one of the other refs. If you're going to re-use a reference, give it a name and cite it again using the name - that way it gets listed once as a multi-use ref
 3. When listing people's published books, don't just give the title: give date, publisher (is it Oxford University Press or a self-publication outfit?), and ISBN (either just as "ISBN nnnnnnnnnnnnn" with no intervening punctuation, or as nnnnnnnnnnnnn. Either of these methods will create a link through to information which shows whether the book is held in major libraries etc as an indication of the author's notability.
 4. There's not much point creating a life section which only gives the date of birth which already appears in the lead section.
 5. I don't think Goodreads should be used as a reference, though it's perhaps OK as an External link, as for Imdb - see some discussion at Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_204#Goodreads

Please try and create better stubs which tell us more about the people you are writing about, from authoritative sources. Thanks. PamD 23:56, 2 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in Antony Manini, disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Please stop labelling inappropriate websites as "Official website". An ODNB entry is a nice authoritative source, but that's not the same thing. You've already been pointed to WP:ELOFFICIAL] which describes what an Official Website is - please read it and take note. A tag has been placed on Manic Bloom requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Proposed deletion of George Algernon Fothergill

[edit]

The article George Algernon Fothergill has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable artist

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -Liancetalk/contribs 21:24, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve George Algernon Fothergill

[edit]

Hi, I'm PamD. Envale, thanks for creating George Algernon Fothergill!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. You have been asked repeatedly not to use URLs in square brackets in references: they make it difficult for readers or other editors to evaluate your sources. Please either leave out the square brackets or format your references properly. Thanks.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

I must also say that you cannot and should not make any edits under another account or IP while this account is blocked, as this would be seen as a block evasion and make any unblocking very, very unlikely. Hello, Envale. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Sylvie Paycha, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion.
