My experience with Adopt-a-user

[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for your posting to my talk page regarding "Your experience with Adopt-a-user". So far, I've said that I would be happy to help several people out but it's not really worked out.

There was a period where I was out of town and I think I lost one or two people during that period.

For others... I've been asked, and I've written back that I would be happy to help out and have asked in what way I could help. I'm guessing that's not the right approach because I don't get return comments. Any suggestions?--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:31, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply :@CaroleHenson:. Would you mind emailing me at gmugar [at] syr.edu to schedule a time for an interview? I am interested in hearing more about the challenges you have had connecting with newcomers. Thanks! Gabrielm199 (talk)
It will be a short conversation, but sure. In the meantime, I have made changes to my talk page to welcoming specifically to new users... and done a few follow-ups. We'll see. If it's your role, it would be good to hear about what makes successful experiences work.--CaroleHenson (talk) 01:26, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@CaroleHenson: Are you available for an interview at 18:00 UTC on Monday the 15th? If so, please email me and we can arrange the details. Thanks! Gabrielm199 (talk) 21:06, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your survey

[edit]

I'd be willing to do your survey, keep the money for other research expenses. However, I'm not sure I fit your needs. I've been editing for only 18 months at more than one edit per year, but I do have 1600 edits in that span. So my experiences as a 'new' editor are fairly recent. I have email set up for my Wikipedia account, so, either way, I'd like to know more about your project—drop me a line. —Neonorange (talk) 07:34, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the quick reply @Neonorange:! What does your schedule look like next week? Might you have time then to do an interview? Monday, Thursday, and Friday are the most flexible for me. Thanks. Gabrielm199 (talk) 14:46, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No availability 'til after 9DEC14. So you are planning live interviews? Text messaging? — Neonorange (talk) 07:27, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you are pressed for time, I could take an interview on Monday, December 1 or Monday, December 8. Please explain the what communication method you want to use (just curious). I've a lot of experience on the other end, intriguing have that reversed. Looking forward to experiencing your methods. —Neonorange (talk) 22:27, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
How about December 8th? What time of day works best for you? Im on east coast time and am fairly flexible during the day. For communication I would prefer voice to conduct the interview. I can use Skype, google hangout, or phone. Let me know what works best for you. Thanks! Gabrielm199 (talk) 03:40, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That date, December 8, is fine; how about 3 PM your time? I'd rather call in to you; email me your incoming telephone number. If that contact method complicates things for you, we'd better have a discussion via email before the 8th. — Neonorange (talk) 04:55, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That works. Please email me at gmugar [at] syr.edu and I will send you my phone number. Gabrielm199 (talk) 12:34, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I'm so late in sending that email. You should find it in your syr.edu mailbox. — Neonorange (talk) 03:43, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'd love to chat with you or fill out a survey. Thus far, Wikipedia has been very nice, and I have enjoyed reading policies and contributing. ~Mable (chat) 07:44, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the quick reply! Do you have time to talk December 18th, 19th, or 20th? If those dates don't work for you please let me know what would work better, I am flexible. In terms of time, I live on the east coast of the United states (UTC +5). Talk soon!Gabrielm199 (talk) 18:42, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What kind of talk are you thinking off? Simple back-and-forth communication like this doesn't work? ~Mable (chat) 08:31, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Back and forth messages are fine. Would it be ok if we did it via email? Gabrielm199 (talk) 14:29, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'd rather not give out my e-mail, sorry. ~Mable (chat) 07:50, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. I suppose we could just exchange messages on my talk page. I will start a new thread for this. Before I do, is it ok if I review your edit history so that I might tailor my questions to your experience? Gabrielm199 (talk) 14:53, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to do so! As far as I am aware, my edit history is public. ~Mable (chat) 15:01, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. How about we conduct the interview in my sandbox talk? I have written up the first set of questions there that you can respond to when you have a moment. Let me know if this is ok with you. Thanks! Gabrielm199 (talk) 15:37, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This is completely fine :) I just answered them, and I'll be looking forward to more questions. I've always enjoyed questionnaires like these, so feel free to ask as many questions as possible! ~Mable (chat) 17:02, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Glad that works. Thank so much for your interest! Gabrielm199 (talk) 18:47, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Survey

[edit]

Thanks for the compliment! Unfortunately I've been on wikipedia (in another language and with another nick) for 8-9 years now, so I'm not exactly a newcomer. Sorry to disappoint, Ihaveacatonmydesk (talk) 18:02, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. Thanks for the reply! Gabrielm199 (talk) 18:35, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My experience with Wikipedia, because you asked

[edit]

Since you are doing a paper on Wikipedia I will give you my impressions.

My learning-experience with Wikipedia is as follows;

1) Until I started to edit Wikipedia I had NO idea HOW INCREDIBLY FLAWED and unreliable this platform is (<-Main Point)

2) In fact, this platform has the exact opposite intended effect;

a) with more than half the information being wrong it is a platform of ignorance

b) The other irrefutable-half of Wikipeida includes a large dose of self-promotion, targeted marketing, popular opinion, intentional misinformation, and the disproportionately weighted inane

3) The "volatile storage" of information makes the platform itself extremely vulnerable and impermanent, and the "random" sourcing and "mis-sourcing" of information is also based on what is available on volatile storage as well. (mis-sourcing and inability to read and understand the sourcing, the discouraging of experts and the total lack of qualification of the "editors -- are secondary issues to the main point.)

Bottom line; platform of ignorance that will be proved to be impermanent. Beyond entertainment, this platform is of little worth and does a major societal disservice.

On the Internet I use my own name rather than an alias.. and generally I have trimmed down my contribution and interaction with it to the role of providing entertainment. Social networking, facebook, linkdn, twitter, Wikipedia are all deleterious to your well being. These are all platforms which encourage you to be a consumer of someone elses product rather than a thinking self reliant capable human being.

MAIN POINT The people "editing" this venue are tools to a profit center, the bottom line of Wikipeida or the bottom line of Google (which now has free entertainment-content) to sell. The people using this venue are consumers, a profit center for others as well. Lfrankblam (talk) 22:49, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your response. Would you be interested in chatting more about this? I see that, despite your not being pleased with the platform, you do continue to participate. I would like to more know about that if you have a moment. Ideally I would like to conduct a voice interview. If you are interested, send an email to gmugar at syr.edu. Gabrielm199 (talk) 14:56, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I will shoot you an email.. But I am not editing much here.. nor will I in the future for the aforementioned reasons.Lfrankblam (talk) 20:03, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Survey

[edit]

Sorry it took me this long to reply. I'd say for the most part my experience has been great. I've edited for several years as an IP (doing gnome work), but I decided to make an account a few months ago to help edit articles more substantially, in particular animation related articles (I'm an animation major). I've run into a couple orcish editors, but for the most part, everybody's been welcoming and helpful. Luthien22 (talk) 17:18, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I have another project about anonymous editors that I hope to get to in the near future. It would be great to reach out to you when that gets started. I look forward to being in touch. Gabrielm199 (talk) 19:04, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Survey question

[edit]

I have taken the survey but said no to the interview, just wondered what the interview would be as I'm happy to help. I have found everyone so helpful and easy to use thanks Wrightie99 (talk) 22:24, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for taking the survey! The interview asks more specific questions about how your experience on Wikipedia has changed over time. I'm glad your experience has been positive so far! Gabrielm199 (talk) 00:00, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Gabriel, are you still doing interviews?Skate Shady - talk to me 15:02, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry

[edit]

Dear Gabrielm199: I was archiving some old messages and I came across the one that you left on my talk page February 17. I apologize for not having replied at the time. I remember reading it, but somehow I managed to forget all about it. It was a busy week for me and I am not a particularly organized person. I hope your project was successful. —Anne Delong (talk) 04:43, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
