While I wouldn't presume to know exactly what Persian Poet Gal was thinking when making this block, many times in the case of an obvious bad faith action like the creation of this account it is better to block right away in order to prevent damage to Wikipedia and send a message that we are working on an encyclopedia, not MySpace. The user is free to create a new account under a more appropriate username, which is much easier and faster than using WP:CHU. More information on this philosophy is here. I'm not saying you did anything "wrong," indeed you were obviously acting in good faith trying to help an inexperienced user, I just thought you might be willing to look at this matter in a different light. Beeblebrox (talk) 04:07, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

OK, I've checked ESPN - as you claim. Where does it say that the Mets signed him? If you cant tell the difference between 'reports'/rumors and facts (and abide by the Wikipedia guidelines) , you shouldn't be editing here. JustSomeRandomGuy32 (talk) 20:13, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Your edits

I appreciate your help as always with NFL player pages, but please see my edits to Marcus Brown (American football) here so you can see what I had to fix on that page. That way we can save me the time of going there after you and tweaking stuff. Thanks!►Chris NelsonHolla! 01:06, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah I forgot, to check over my edits there and didn't realize I forgot somethings and added things such as extra 0's, clearly I need to proofread more carefully.--Iamawesome800 01:41, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Your RFA

Your RFA will likely be snow-closed if you don't withdraw yourself. I hope you take the comments to heart. It's all but impossible to pass RfA with your edit count these days, and very difficult to pass with even 2x your tenure and edit count. I would wait until you have at least 9 months and 3000 edits before considering it, but before you do it, check to make sure the informal minumums haven't gone up in the meantime. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 04:16, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

I agree with Davidwr, although us Wikipedians welcome your enthusiasm in wanting to help the project to the best of your ability, we have specific criteria to make sure that all our administrators have the experience required to do their job. Don't get me wrong, your not barred from admininship, just wait a while and build up your experience. Happy editing! Foxy Loxy Pounce! 04:41, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Trust me it's okay I knew it might of been a little early but I thought I'd give it a try and I will look at the comments and tips left for me so that my next RFA is successful.--Iamawesome800 13:40, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Rotoworld

I don't know why they have that glitch and why it hasn't been fixed, but yeah, old transactions show up on each day of the transaction page. My recommendation (which is what I do) is just look at the Player News pages of Rotoworld as opposed to the transactions page.

If you're going to use the transactions page, I recommend doing two things:

  1. Check the link they have as a source. If it's a bad link (i.e. gives an error and doesn't take you to an article) then it's pretty likely to be an old transaction.
  2. Search the player on Google News to see if they is anything about it that verifies a recent move.►Chris NelsonHolla! 20:02, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah when I noticed you were reverting my edits, I decided to check out the sources (which I hadn't been doing) to see when the stories were and when I got a 404 message, I knew that those transactions happened last year.--Iamawesome800 21:31, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Doug Marrone

Hi there Iamawesome800. Do you have a reliable source to support this paragraph you added to the Doug Marrone article? I did a brief search and couldn't find one myself. The content seemed like it could have potentially created some controversy so I removed it per WP:GRAPEVINE. BlueAg09 (Talk) 09:11, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Okay, good. I did some additional searching and found some sources that touch on the matter. I have added the same paragraph back and cited those sources. Thanks for letting me know. BlueAg09 (Talk) 20:22, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Re:Signature!

Thanks for reminding me. I meant to send this 2 U during the weekend, but User:Pats1 blocked me out all because I added RT and HT to the boxscore on the article, "2008 New England Patriots season." Man, both him and that Chris Nelson guy are SO touchy with what I do here.

Alakazam (talk) 20:34, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

I have to say I agree with them because, they know their way around the NFL pages, and know that the average fan probably won't know who the Skins or the Fins are let alone what RT and HT mean.--Iamawesome800 20:45, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Iam, Thanks for your interest in the new little slug article. I just wanted to explain that when you are dealing with Latin names, i.e. the scientific names of organisms, it goes like this: the name of the genus is always capitalized, but the name of the species is never capitalized. So the species name always begins with a small letter, even when it is derived from a place name, or a personal name. That may look a bit weird sometimes, but those are the rules of biological nomenclature, and when you deal with scientific names a lot, you get used to it pretty fast. If you like, you can take a look at Scientific name#Rules. All the best wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 14:39, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Okay, I wasn't sure but it just looked funny, so I went with a gut feeling there.--Iamawesome800 16:56, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Your request for rollback

After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback can be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback may be removed at any time.

If you no longer want rollback, then contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some information on how to use rollback, you can view this page. I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, just leave me a message if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Happy editing! Re: Practice squad

Yes, but immediately (i.e. they can sign with playoff teams, or onto playoff practice squads). However, many PSers will stick around and sign future contracts with their old teams in the next few weeks, which puts them on the 80-man roster once the new league year starts. Pats1 T/C 02:00, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Yep, they're no longer members of their respective teams. Pats1 T/C 02:03, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
It's not a big deal, but your edit summaries saying "Waived" for practice squad players from eliminated teams isn't really correct. They haven't been waived (as in released) but rather they all have one-year contracts that have expired.►Chris NelsonHolla! 02:46, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Thing to do when updating player articles

Since you and I are probably going to be the two most active editors of player articles as the offseason begins, I thought it'd be good to list some things we should each try to do:

  • For player re-signed to future contacts, change the infobox status field from Practice Squad to Active.
  • Link the years in the infobox with Template:NFL Year by typing: {{NFL Year|2008}} or whatever year is correct
  • Change the hyphens in the infobox (as in 2008—present) from - to –. You can find the – right below the edit box on the edit page (just to the right of the drop-down box that says Insert). It's the first dash from the left. Let me know if that doesn't make sense, haha.
  • Add NFL debut to the infobox if applicable
  • If stats are already in infobox, update through Week 17 of the 2008 season. If stats aren't in infobox, it's up to you if you want to add them.
  • De-link the birth dates in the intros.
  • Use the Template:City-state for the birth place in the intro. (Ex: {{city-state|Atlanta|Georgia}})
  • Standardize intros. This is how I do it (things in caps should be replaced):
PLAYER NAME (born BIRTH DATE in BIRTH PLACE) is an American football POSITION for the CURRENT TEAM of the CURRENT LEAGUE. He was drafted by the DRAFT TEAM in the # round of the YEAR NFL Draft. He played college football at COLLEGE.
Some variations:
  • If player was undrafted, say "He was signed by the ORIGINAL TEAM as an undrafted free agent in SIGNED YEAR."
Below that, add any teams not listed in the previous paragraph: (Ex. Smith has also played for the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins)
If player has not played for all teams he's been a member of (if he has some practice squad or offseason tenures) just say "Smith has also been a member of..." instead of "has also played for..."
Also, be sure to remove "who is a practice squad player" from the intro if it's there. For free agents, I do "is an American football POSITION who is currently a free agent. For practice squad players, I lose the word "currently" and say "is an American football POSITION who is a practice squad player for the CURRENT TEAM of the CURRENT LEAGUE."
  • Add any team site bios to the External links section with TEAM NAME bio as the link name.
  • Replace DEFAULTSORT in the categories with the Lifetime template: {{Lifetime|BIRTHYEAR|DEATHYEAR|LAST NAME, FIRST NAME}} (Ex. for Peyton Manning you would type {{Lifetime|1976||Manning, Peyton}} Be sure to add two || between the birth year and the last name to ensure the death year field is blank!
Hope this makes sense. Thanks for your help!►Chris NelsonHolla! 19:42, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
Replied on my talk. By the way, I'll update the Bears' re-signings and you can do the Broncos' players pages. That way we won't get into edit conflicts.►Chris NelsonHolla! 21:33, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
Okay yeah sure, just did the Broncos re-signings a few minutes ago, now I'm updating the player pages.--Iamawesome800 21:34, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
I think it's when free agency begins, like Feb/March. Ask Pats1.►Chris NelsonHolla! 02:22, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Regular free agents

Regular free agency begins right around the beginning of the league year, which is right around March 1. I'll have to check the exact dates for this year. Regular free agents are under contract until then. Pats1 T/C 03:15, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

I noticed you started doing the Pats' free agents. Like I said, they aren't free agents until the end of February (when their contracts expire), but if you want to get a head start, that's fine with me. Pats1 T/C 20:24, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
I don't really know if that's a good idea. It's technically not accurate at all. Technically, any guys with expiring contracts re-signed by their teams before free agency begins were never free agents or not under contract. Please return the current teams to the infobox (the rest of the edits can stay) until their contracts are up. I really don't want to have to go back and do it myself.►Chris NelsonHolla! 20:26, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah it totally left my mind that they haven't had the chance to re-sign yet, I'll just stop changing them and wait.--GiantsRule 20:29, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
And please go back and (halfway) undo the ones you've already done. Most of the edits can stay (such as the lifetime templates for the categories and stuff) but just re-add the team name, jersey number and (–present) to the infobox and tweak the intros. I'll help you do them when the time is right.
Actually, what you can do is go through the all free agents' articles and just update everything BUT removing the teams and jersey numbers and such. Add the lifetime templates, tweak the intros, etc. That way, when free agency begins, all we have to do is go to their articles and change the team to Free Agent make some other minor edits.►Chris NelsonHolla! 20:32, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah okay.--GiantsRule 20:33, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

See my edit at Dantrell Savage for what I had to change after you. ;-) ►Chris NelsonHolla! 21:58, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Oh shit, I can't believe I forgot all that.--GiantsRule 21:59, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
No worries, it's a lot of stuff to remember. Also, when you add the lifetime template, remember to delete the Living people and Birth year categories because the lifetime template adds them automatically.►Chris NelsonHolla! 22:01, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
Okay, yeah I can start doing that.--GiantsRule 22:04, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Couple more things

  • For restricted and exclusive-rights free agents, I always find it easiest to leave their teams in the infobox and just put Restricted Free Agents or Exclusive-Rights Free Agent in the status section. Since they aren't fully UFAS and their old teams can somewhat control whether or not they leave (for ERFAs especially) they are much more likely to stay with the same team. That way when they re-sign, we just change the status back to active. For UFAs we should make them Free Agent for the team though.
  • When updating the years in an infobox, don't use 2009 at all for current signings made in the new year by teams still in the playoffs. For example, if the Titans signed a guy to the active roster on a one-year deal or the Chargers signed a guy to the practice squad next week, be sure to only use 2008 in their infobox for the team's tenure. It might seem weird, but since the moves came during the 2008 NFL season it will be much more confusing in the long run. Imagine if a guy is only with the Chargers for a week from January 3 to January 10 while San Diego is in the playoffs. If we put San Diego Chargers (2009)* in the infobox, people would assume he was with them during the 2009 season.

Let me know if some of this is confusing.►Chris NelsonHolla! 16:42, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Adams/Wendell

There are no rules for numbers of inactive players. While there is a strict set of rules about what numbers player can wear in games and on the active roster, offseason numbers and practice squad numbers can essentially be anything. It's not uncommon for two players to share a number when rosters are expanded in the offseason, especially when they play on different sides of the ball. You won't usually see two players on the same side wear the ball, but since Wendell and Adams don't (and thus won't be wearing the same color jersey in practice) it's not really an issue.►Chris NelsonHolla! 23:32, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

What Chris said. In the offseason and on practice squads, anything goes. In some cases, once offseason rosters get large, teams have to double up on some numbers. As long as they're on different sides of the ball (since the only jerseys teams wear from January to August are practice jerseys), it's no big deal for two players to have the same number. On the Pats' training camp rosters, they usually delineate this using, for example, 75w for the offensive #75 (Barry Stokes, white jersey), and 75b for defensive #75 (Vince Wilfork, blue jersey).
