Thanks for your input regarding my intended work on the North Carolina Eugenics Board page. Hi. When you recently edited Dexetra, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Android and Siri (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Graeme, I don't know why I'm experiencing this "log out" anomaly (has WP somehow changed a "cookie" duration parameter?) as it has never been problematic for me before. If I might call upon you to, once again, correct these inadvertent IP edits (commencing with this one, I would be most appreciative. Revision deletion request

[edit]

Hi. A few weeks ago, this edit was made from my account while I was away from my PC. On returning, I reverted it. May I please request that this specific revision be deleted from the history of the page? The page was edited in such a way as to reveal personal information (namely place of work) of the subject of the article (Sarah Eadon). Having spoken to Sarah personally, she has asked me to request this deletion for privacy reasons. I found your username in CAT:REVDEL and I would like to ask for your help with this.

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Graeme,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 00:58, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Friesland

[edit]

(That was fast. You must have Dante on your desk.)
"Center". The Dutch always used to use UK spelling. But around here, there's a lot of US in the Dutch articles. I'm wondering if there's been a sea change in the Dutch educational system.
Cheers, Varlaam (talk) 15:27, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I did an online search and confirmed it in my paper book. I don't know about the spelling, you could use the wikiblame to see who spelled what way. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:52, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am thinking back some decades here. Holland reliably spelled the UK way, whilst US colonies like the Philippines and Israel spelled their way.
But WP does not now conform to that – an hypothesis based on my 22,000 articles edited – and it's hard to believe Americans are writing articles on Dutch villages. I suspect the Netherlands has adopted a different "international standard", not one used by me.
Of course, these days, I could just fire off an email to the Dutch Ministry of Education enquiring about their curriculum.
Varlaam (talk) 17:35, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And on the subject of spelling, that neologism "andchiiping" on your User page is interesting. The double 'i' implies Finnish, or possibly Samoyedic, origin.
Your "Aussie states visited" box, I will be pinching that. No ACT for me, but I worked in Syd in '88.
Next shout is mine, Varlaam (talk)

Articles for Creation appeal

[edit]
Articles for Creation urgently needs your help!

Articles for Creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently the are 1084 submissions waiting to be reviewed.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Are you autoconfirmed?
  5. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog.

Perfect Timing

[edit]

Hi Graeme, perfect timing for an admin to contact me. I have recently become aware that I don't have good sense of what the Wikipedia community wants to include or delete on Wikipedia. I need an independent third party administrator to go through and review any articles I created.

If you believe any of the articles I started should not exist, you have my permission to delete them in the manner you see fit-- if I'm the only contributor, just instadelete is fine for me. It's important that Wikipedia maintain coherent standards and to the extend I haven't done that, I need help in cleaning up any mess I've made.

It would be best if a 3rd party admin like you or someone else on your team were to do this, but if needed I'll take the time to go through and nominate those I suspect may lack sufficient notability. Vivian Ho, for example, should be reviewed for potential deletion, I think, knowing what I know now about the deletion process. --HectorMoffet (talk) 12:07, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Concerns over an editor

[edit]

Hi Graeme. I had started a discussion on Charles Dickens page over one editors, Yogesh's, point of view section on the article. I brought up the excessive non white emphasis throughout the article (installed by Yogesh) which is out of proportion than what you would find in a book on him, and i had assumed it would be a regular discussion. However as i read various contributors comments on the user i became concerned. First concern personal attacks from the contributor, second concern white Christian accusations, third concern "white supremacist" accusations, fourth concern article was being used as a soapbox to advance a personally held political position (an example being the 'Franklin incident' section was longer tnan 'Dickens Later Years', which read like a history of the incident with nothing to do with Dickens), fifth concern warned of user's history and referred to ANI, INB. Surely with these viewpoints any impartiality is out the window? The other contributors seek an accurate, NPOV, balanced, weighted section with consensus, this is impossible with an editor with views i mentioned (who has also been warned of 3RR which Tom Reedy placed on his talkpage). Thats six editors (that ive come across) that have made comments on the user over just the past week, and looking at the article history there are others that extend back 3 years (he has also complained of an Anglo-American bias). I had hoped Dickens page would be improved by editors who had done similar with Shakespeare, rather than languish as class C, but one editor ensures it remains at thet level. A highly respected impartial editor, Old Moonraker, refuses to comment on the article due to the users personal attacks. The user ignores policy and plants his material at will, regardless of wiki requirement of NPOV, weight. Given the plethora of complaints by many editors, the partial viewpoints held by the user, i cant see any other alternative but a topic ban, which allows for edits by proxy. Harrison 1979 (talk) 10:27, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Quick note...

[edit]

Hey, sorry I only just now noticed your comments here. Unfortunately (as I had not noticed your comment), I had updated the Account creator page, gotten it reverted, subsequently posted the suggested addition on the talk page of the relevant page, then posted the material back seeing no objection. Phew... That said, now that I've seen your comment, please do feel free to revert the changes in case you don't agree with the same. I'm quite neutral about the same. It's just that I realize that in the course of the ACC tool becoming what it is, the policy pages weren't updated concurrently to document the importance of the Interface administrators who already have the right to approve/disapprove users from using the ACC tool interface. That's a much higher right than approving users to go beyond the daily account creation limit by giving them the account creator flag. In my opinion, as the Interface administrators are already identified to WMF, are highly trusted, and have a right higher than giving the account creator flag, then why not give them the procedural go-ahead to grant the account creator flag too? Oh man... and I said I was neutral about it :) Btw, it's wonderful to see you around always. Best. Wifione Message 16:17, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lazarus taxon

[edit]

Howdy Graeme. I noticed that you removed the category Lazarus taxon from the category page and added Extinct species. I was just wondering, since species are actually found not to be extinct, would that category not be confusing? I don't know enough about how things are categorized really, but I would like to learn more about this. Also, this is the first time I created a category page. I was concerned because it seemed like if there should have been a page for Lazarus taxon, there already would have been. Seems like such an obvious category. I am guessing the work I have done on the category is all good, or it would have been deleted. Can you let me know? Best, --Jsderwin (talk) 10:55, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AWB Request

[edit]

I've done many more edits, I've been working on some of the self-contradiction and other areas of the backlogs. I am aware that I am highly active on the Anti-vandalism tool STiki and AfC projects. Which floods out my contributions frequently. I'm on IRC #wikipedia-en-help and #wikipedia-en-helpers often if you prefer to interview me in person. Though I should sum up my request specifically as this: I want to assist with the Backlogged projects; and that is the best way I know to maximize my efficiency and ability to make Wikipedia better. I have no intention to misuse or tamper with readability on a page. I'll focus on whatever aspects you want or even test me to show that I can and will use it properly. Edit: I'll be on for the next hour and 30 minutes if you want to talk to me personally. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 18:46, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I had a look at your contributions, but still most are automated. That is not that there is any problem, just insufficient depth of manual article writing. However I am not refusing, just allowing another admin to make the choice on AWB. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 10:14, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Graeme Bartlett, recently you considered it to be likely that Blackheathsnow is identical with the maintainer of the site blackheathwesather.com. This has meanwhile been confirmed through ticket:2012031010004529. You no longer need to follow-up this. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 10:37, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New student needs help

[edit]

Hi there. A student, Jamal, has done some work on the Genetically modified food article. S/he added a History section on March 6. It is so poorly done that I think it should be fixed or removed entirely. It appears that next to no effort was put into the edit and no refs are provided. Another editor and I responded to his/her talk page note and s/he has not bothered to answer. The other editor posted some very good advice and a quick check of the suggested article revealed that at least part of Jamal's edit is not correct.

On the other hand, perhaps Jamal did try to do a good edit and this is beyond his/her ability. Unless s/he came to the article with at least some understanding of genetics it would be a lot to expect of a new editor to write a history of GM foods, IMO. At any rate, Jamal should at least leave a note on the talk page. Gandydancer (talk) 20:44, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am surprised that you did not have the courtesy to respond to my post. I have deleted the student's addition at the GM food article. Gandydancer (talk) 20:41, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I have been a bit distracted. I though the edit was just a sideways move, but not so bad that it needed reverting. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:51, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, I wish you would have responded to my post. As it was, it just sat there for several weeks with no sources to check for accuracy. As you know, there is a lot of argument over GM foods - who knows how many individuals used our article for history information in the meantime? It would be good to have a History section, but till it is done right a person would be better off looking at the History section of the other GM articles and get facts that are documented and/or presented in more detail. Hi. When you recently edited Genetically modified fish, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sterile (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

SPA warnings

[edit]

I am aware that they will have no further effect on the debate, but can you warn AkramBinWallid (he ignored a warning already on being an SPA and removed his SPA tag, which is no longer next to his comment) and the two sock ips 114.229.254.215 and 114.229.158.96? They most likely will not come back since the voting is over but they might think that this behavior is okay in the future if they don't receive a warning.Bunser (talk) 01:22, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I have acted to undo 114.229.253.171's disruptive edits that were made shortly before the move request discussion was closed. Besides, I have taken an unrelated section out from the closed area. Please refer to Talk:ROC for more details. Thanks. Jeffrey (202.189.98.132) (talk) 10:55, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you have removed the "Challenged" header. But I'm afraid those aren't "Others" comment. How should this be fix? Should the "Challenged" comments be moved back to the "Support" and "Oppose" sections? Jeffrey (202.189.98.132) (talk) 10:58, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It does not matter, leave the comments where they are, we will read all the comments, and we don't want it all changing while people are trying to read it. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:07, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see. But it's better to leave a break there so that other closing administrators will know from that point onwards the comments aren't "Others" but something else. Jeffrey (202.189.98.132) (talk) 11:33, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Eraserhead has removed the details that I submitted above. Please refer to this version (Talk:Republic of China#114.229.253.171's edits, #Naming convention link section) for the details. Thanks. Jeffrey (202.189.98.132) (talk) 11:26, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for butting in. I came there via AIV and full protected the talk for an hour to stop warring. The page is rather long for me to read or even edit, thus it would be great if Graeme Bartlett (or other involved admin) could sort out the last-minute additions. In the interest of all parties, I would suggest an ultimatum: any non-admins involved in this recent edit war are to be blocked immediately for edit warring if they attempt to edit a closed section. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 11:30, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Materialscientist I was threatening to do this, but giving the edit warriors a chance to stop themselves. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 12:00, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ranks and insignia of NATO/Generic

[edit]

Hi, although you moved your page to Template:Ranks and insignia of NATO/Generic, it does not look as if it is working. I see this:

!{{{Grade}}}

NATO Grade  France  Poland  Great Britain  United States

So I suggest that you move it back to the sandbox name and fix it first, otherwise it will be deleted again. At least put a no include comment to say what it is and how it is used. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 12:33, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with your comments on canvassing

[edit]

With regards to: "Some canvassing is valid, others may be trying to manipulate the outcome. Its sanctions are against the canvaser not those canvased, so statements and arguments from people responding to these calls will still be considered."

I really don't think this can be allowed to stand.

Firstly unless you are going to checkuser everyone who commented in the discussion you can't catch the canvasser even if they don't leave the comfort of their own home, and I doubt you can justify such a widespread check user on privacy grounds. Secondly even if you do checkuser everyone who commented in the discussion, you can easily avoid it by travelling to a different city and/or country, or you could canvass without commenting in the discussion yourself with a secondary account and thus avoid getting checked with a checkuser.

Even if you can catch them (which isn't necessarily easy as per the above paragraph) the worst you can do is give the user in question an indefinite block, I'm sure there are plenty of partisans in this discussion (and many others) who would be prepared to take that kind of hit to make their point.

On a separate point there is the sheer scale of the inappropriate canvassing in this case, I would estimate that between confirmed sock puppets from Hong Kong, the inappropriate canvassing on Chinese wiki and the inappropriate canvassing of editors with an interest in the Republic of China that at least 50% of the users who !voted against the proposal were bought to the discussion by nefarious means. In comparison on the support side we are probably talking about 10-15% in total, including those bought to the discussion by the inappropriate canvassing for the oppose site, the levels of inappropriate canvassing here isn't really comparable.

Even if you decide to close the discussion as move in this case what's to stop even more outrageous canvassing to take place next time (maybe for a different topic, maybe for this topic) and then the balance being tipped. Given this proposed move was heavily advertised legitimately there isn't really anything else that can be done to drown out the inappropriate canvassing that took place for this move request

If you take a hard line on canvassing and catch a few additional people up in the canvassing effort I really don't see this as a big deal, making the effect of the canvassing negative makes it less likely to take place in future which has to be a good thing for the project. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 20:18, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One further brief comment, I'd like to get this sorted out before the move request is formally closed and a decision publicly posted. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 20:49, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Many of your points on Canvassing are valid. We base action of WP:CANVAS. Checkuser will not be used to try to identify who may have been doing it. The SPA's are at a big disadvantage because they know little of Wikipedia policy and so provide non-policy based arguments. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:13, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But the people who had ROC user boxes and were asked to comment, aren't SPA's and have made some reasonable reasonable arguments. The impact of those people is significant. I haven't checked everyone who commented, but it did go from 33 Supports to 20 Opposes on the 11 March to 43 Supports to 45 Opposes on the 15 March, that's a huge change in the numbers of !votes over quite a short time period.
If you don't discount the people who were canvassed comments then there is no incentive for people not to behave in the same way again. This kind of behaviour has an enormous impact on our ability to solve this and other problematic discussions in future.
If we can't discount the people who were canvassed here I will escalate this, to Arbcom if needed, we can't allow this level of disruption to stand if we want to solve problems in controversial topic areas in future. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 21:31, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore it isn't as if discounting comments from canvassed users is explicitly forbidden - if you don't feel comfortable just doing it another way forward would be to start a thread on ANI and see if you can get a consensus as to whether it is appropriate to do so. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 21:50, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Do I have to take this to ANI (and if needed Arbcom) to get this dealt with properly then? I really consider that unfortunate and it would be much better if you guys clarified this with the wider community rather than someone partisan doing so. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 18:19, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I fully agree with Graeme that we are going to make this decision based on the strengths of the arguments and not the numbers of !voters. Where they came from doesn't matter; what they said does.--Aervanath (talk) 20:42, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is not to say that we shouldn't discourage canvassing; we should. But as I've pointed out in the section below, there is no bar to editing Wikipedia or participating in our discussions. Should you choose to "escalate" this to WP:ANI or WP:ARBCOM, such is your right; but I highly doubt you will get a satisfactory response. You will note that WP:CANVAS does not include any measure for barring canvassed editors from participating in discussions, it only includes repercussions for those doing the canvassing.--Aervanath (talk) 20:53, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
ANI it is. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 22:42, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I must start off by saying thanks for your efforts in trying to resolve the mess on that page. You have my admiration and sympathy.

I was just wondering if it is possible and/or reasonable for you and your two colleagues to say something about that fact that a large number of editors, mostly on the Oppose side, insisted on not registering? And I mean saying something more than than fact that it's not compulsory to register. As I said many times in the discussion, I found it almost impossible to follow conversations when several of the participants were just using IP addresses. My mind just doesn't work in a way the allows me to easily and separately recognise several different IP addresses contributing to a conversation. I think it made many of the conversations there even less coherent than they already were.

Obviously, as mentioned in discussion, there are also other issues with not registering, such as IP addresses changing, etc.

I know you guys don't make policy, but you will be setting a precedent in some areas, so any chance that the IP address issue could be addressed? HiLo48 (talk) 19:13, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IMO this is significantly less of an issue than the canvassing issue I've raised in the previous section. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 19:43, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia has always been free to edit; there has never been a requirement to log in. I realize you don't find this satisfactory, but until you can convince the wider community that there should be a requirement to register in order to participate in debates, we don't have any authority to manufacture one. We will not be setting precedent. We can't. As administrators, our job is to apply community policy as previously determined by consensus, not to make new policy. If you have trouble separating out who is making what comment, then maybe you shouldn't try; it is always better to focus on what is spoken than the speaker.--Aervanath (talk) 20:47, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I actually agree with most of that, but you must realise that the large number of IP editors in that discussion (obviously an unusual situation - coping with one or two is easier), plus the moving around and editing of others' posts, made several conversations fairly incoherent. It raised the level of tension and failure to communicate. But having said that, I won't say any more on the matter. HiLo48 (talk) 01:12, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Hi Graeme Bartlett. I did add sources to the wikipedia page that I am trying to create, but when I copy and paste the new page, the new ref tags do not show up. Copyrights of images

[edit]

In the log summary of File:Cheers cast 1982 bw.jpg, you said: "well it may aloso (you mean, "also") be public domain due to lack of correct copyright notce, but we are using this as non free". From what I've heard, "All rights reserved" in post-1977 works imply copyrights. I've heard that from we hope and some other people. If you are copyright expert, what does this imply:

Omission of notice must have violated "an express requirement in writing that, as a condition of the copyright owner's authorization of the public distribution of copies or phonorecords, they bear the prescribed notice."

The 1976 Act no longer requires copyright registration for created works: the law protects works that either display faulty copyright notice or omits it by three things: either registration before or within five years after first publication, correcting a faulty notice or an omission in many other copies, or the italicized statement above. --George Ho (talk) 04:45, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WSSP

[edit]

Hello. Regarding this comment, I actually rewrote much of the page. There was a lot of original research and synthesis that first needed tidying up, including a copyrighted pic that has since been deleted. Only then did I start the article proper, rendering the duplicate draft superfluous per A10. As such, if I made any error, it's perhaps in not requesting a history merge. I've also had an uninvolved admin look over the page in its new form, and he saw no issues with it. In future, if you have an issue, please take it up with me directly for a quick resolution. Thanks, Middayexpress (talk) 02:17, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When I was listing the duplicate draft for deletion, a wiki message indicated that it wasn't an article and as such had to be listed on Mfd. So I listed it there. A move then clean-up may have been a better chronology, but at least the wiki community has a tidier page now. Same steps, different order. Thanks for the procedural info, though. RuPaul's Drag Race : Was it useful ?

Hello, I'm one of the various people who participated in the creation and the updating of the page about the fourth season of RuPaul's Drag Race. The thing is, I wasn't registered when I made a lot of these participations. You have locked the page, and now I can't do what I liked : type what happened in this episode or that episode... Is there any way you could unlock the page ? If it's impossible, is there any way I can at least modify it time to time ? Being able to sum up the Finale would be great...

Thanks a lot !

But the Finale is airing Monday, April 23rd and I'll surely make the recap the day following. :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whatisitexactly (talkcontribs) 19:50, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for those quick answers ! Well there's an episode airing Monday called RuPaul Rewind and it's basically a review of the whole season with extra scenes, audition tapes and interviews with the Top 3 of the last season. So I can do the Finale recap and the Rewind recap in a row. I'll try to edit my sandbox but right now I have some integration calculus waiting for me ;) Thank you for everything !

Request page protection

[edit]

Hi.. i noticed you on the Requests for page protection page. I'm requesting semi-protection on the Rita Ora article as although shes British (moved to London the same year she was born) her ethnicity (Kosovo-Albanian.. and born in what was then Yugoslavia) clearly stirs up some political tension. Her page has only just come off full lock where no-one could edit. I don't think temporary semi-protection would suffice as this problem will almost certainly occur again, so im requesting permanent semi-protection. Thanks. JJ 65 (talk) 21:58, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Inspite of the lock, all the other editors are now encountering a problem with one user who ignores WP guidlines on Origin; "The city from which the singer or group originated, that is, the city where individual performers started their career". As an admin your help would be appreciated. Thanks. JJ 65 (talk) 13:20, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your HighBeam account is ready!

[edit]

Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.
    • Only 407 of 444 codes were successfully delivered; most failed because email was simply not set up (You can set it in Special:Preferences).
    • If you did not receive a code but were on the approved list, add your name to this section and we'll try again.
  • The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
  • To activate your account: 1) Go to http://www.highbeam.com/prof1; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.
  • If you need assistance, email "help at highbeam dot com", and include "HighBeam/Wikipedia" in the subject line. Or go to WP:HighBeam/Support, or ask User:Ocaasi. Please, per HighBeam's request, do not call the toll-free number for assistance with registration.
  • A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • HighBeam would love to hear feedback at WP:HighBeam/Experiences
  • Show off your HighBeam access by placing {{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}} on your userpage
  • When the 1-year period is up, check applications page to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.

Thanks for helping make Wikipedia better. Enjoy your research! Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 20:44, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you recently edited Wu Mi, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Yuan (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hello, Graeme Bartlett. As a closing admin of the recent Taiwan/ROC discussion, I would appreciate it if you (as an experienced admin) could take a look at this discussion and give me your opinion. I'm new to this wiki and not thoroughly familiar with policy, but it appears that this discussion has many of the same problems as the Taiwan/ROC discussion. Most of the opposers seem to be Apple fanboys who have little policy-based arguments. If you could take a look at my reasons and tell me what you think, it would be greatly appreciated. YumOooze (talk) 02:14, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This discussion is nowhere near as heated. However I think that it can be open for longer rather than just closing as no consensus to move. The supporters of the move have not supplied any evidence yet. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 02:57, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, this is just what I needed to know. Thanks. YumOooze (talk) 04:04, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Regarding some edits on this page, is Acps110 correct in this revert? (Note that I was changing arguments that were all originally written by me.) Also, has he violated WP:3RR? I'm not sure of his reasoning behind reverting my edits and comments. YumOooze (talk) 05:59, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well you did trash comments by YuMaNuMa. Please confine yourself to adding comments after those already made, or the paragraph you are replying too, and don't attempt to refactor other people's comments as this is what leads to a mess and escallated tension. I will ignore any 3RR at this point as every one is thinking they are acting in good faith. Just add your usage cases as yet another new subsection if you want. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 06:20, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't quite understand what you mean. What does trash comments mean? Do you mean I'm replying too hashly to YuMaNuMa's comments? YumOooze (talk) 06:25, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I thought you had removed the comments, but now I see that you replaced your case at the top. It is best not to do that as people will have commented on what you wrote earlier. So instead you should make your new addition at the bottom or the RM. Then people can respond to the new evidence in an appropriate spot. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 06:33, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I see. Can I just withdraw this discussion and start another one then? I think the initial arguments didn't make a lot of sense but I now have figured out all of the relevant policies to discuss. YumOooze (talk) 06:38, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can add a comment that you want to withdraw your nomination, but I don't think that is your intent. Since others have supported your original proposal, you cannot just close it off now, as that would be controversial. I suggest that you just add a nice new comment section clearly stating your new case. You can stike off your own comments that you made on other people's posts, but only strike off your original proposal at the top if you want to withdraw it altogether and not propose the same thing. We need to show some respect to those that have put in the effort to the debate so if I close this debate there should not immediately be a new one, it is better to continue with what is there already, otherwise we make everyone state their case again. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 06:46, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Wu Mi

The article Superstatistics has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

notability WP:N: no indication of any follow-up work or use of this idea, described as "junk" on talk page

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Yeah that should be possible, but don't reprooduce anything that is a problem. The cite templates look OK/ Graeme Bartlett (talk) 10:43, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Could you look at Template:Did you know nominations/Megitza? --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 10:45, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When you put in a new hook, put in alt1. Then reviewers can see the old and new and can compare them. Also you don't qualify for create expand as your contributions are only minor. But you can be classed as nominator. Article is big and new enough. I have never before failed a DYK because of a wrong creator though! I suggest that you remove yourself from the creator bit. The reference web site for hook fails for me, so I would not pass it as confirmed. Plagiaris is more tricky to detect here, but a Polish expert should check if the article is not a direct translation of its sources. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 10:57, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Iron dihydride requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. sumone10154(talkcontribs) 15:23, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Frank John James deletion

[edit]

The deletion of Frank John James is questionable, as many people have asked for this for years and has yet to be posted. If there is something that can be changed to improve it, I would appreciate it. Deletion seems extreme for the circumstances.
