French elections

[edit]

Hello. I've just spotted the discussion you started on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject France#Explanation of the French elections (1816-1824), and noticed that the work was never finished (for 1818 and 1821). Did you manage to finish this (and are both the 1922 ones correct)? I'd quite like to create the articles if you have the sources.

Also, I posted a question about the 1958 elections - did the French colonies not elect MPs to the National Assembly in this election? I can find figures for the 1956 elections for colonial MPs, but nothing for 1958. Thanks! Number 57 10:37, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have the figures for the elections for the years 1815-30 (with a bit of research), but I'm a bit concerned that this information can be considered as unpublished work. The results are given by the newspapers of the time, but there are a lot of mistakes and journalists did not always know the opinion of all the MPs. So I have to fill the blanks with what I know and from academic dictionaries. Electoral results start to be accurate with the 1834 elections. Before this date, journalists were still hesitant. I'm a historian specialist of 19th century France, I'm less aware of the elections of the 20th century, especially with the colonies. I'm pretty sure Algeria elected some MPs though. Please give me your opinion on the elections. 90.21.171.185 (talk) 11:44, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My opinion on the 1958 elections is that it does look like the colonial MPs were not elected that year. This biography of Fily-Dabo Sissoko (an MP for Soudan) suggests that his term was extended by a ordinance of 17 October 1958, which meant that his term would expire on 14 July 1959, and (I assume) that he did not have to contest his seat in the elections in November. This seems to be confirmed by the biography of Kissourou Barema, which suggests that these MPs were "unregistered" (non inscrit) members of the 1958–1962 National Assembly.
However, this is based on my limited knowledge of French. If you could confirm that my thoughts are correct, that would be really helpful. Thanks, Number 57 12:07, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you're right. The term of the colonial MPs was extended for one year. You have here the official record if you want to link it (ordinance 58-974, art.4): http://www.senat.fr/fileadmin/Fichiers/Images/archives/D57/58-974.pdf
Will you create pages for the missing elections of the 1815-22 elections? Send me a message if you think it's ok with Wikipedia's rules.JoB 35 (talk) 12:31, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thank you for confirming. I will create the articles if you can five me some links? Number 57 12:52, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure it doesn't infringe the rule of unpublished work?JoB 35 (talk) 13:08, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you are able to reference the information both to the newspapers and dictionaries, then I don't see it being a problem. There are many contradictory sources out there, and at some point it is the editor's discretion which one is correct - I have just created several articles on Dahomeyan politics and quite a few sources had different dates for events, so I took the ones that seemed the most likely based on linked events. They might be challenged at a later date, but I did use sources for everything. Number 57 13:16, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks. I have checked and the elections for 1816 also need to be edited. I think you can remove "Roi et présidents" from the sources everywhere you find it since - from what I read - it's mostly false or erroneous. I don't have all the materials on my computer and as it's quite long to have the figures, I think I need several days to give you the results. I will write on your page when I have them.JoB 35 (talk) 13:41, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
