Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Joburley. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{edit COI}} template)—don't forget to give details of reliable sources supporting your suggestions;
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam § External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. 331dot (talk) 23:32, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, but we did note in the page that we were his family. Is there any way I can get a copy of everything that has been removed? This was an immense amount of work on out behalf, and to lose it would be a tremendous loss. Joburley (talk) 23:50, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- There is a formal disclosure to make(at least if you intend to keep editing) on your user page, please follow the link above "How to disclose a COI". Copyright violations cannot be restored or emailed. You say you did a lot of work, but you just copied the obituary. 331dot (talk) 00:09, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Joburley. Given you're declaring that you have personal connection to Cliff Hanley, neither you, the other members of your family nor anyone else personally or professionally connected to your dad should really be trying to directly edit the article; instead, it's much better if you follow the advice given in WP:COIADVICE and WP:PSCOI#Steps for engagement and use the article's corresponding talk page to make edit requests proposing the changes you think need to be made. This will allow other Wikipedian unconnected to your dad to assess the proposal in terms of relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and incorporate any changes that pass muster properly into the article. Your last attempt to edit the article not only introduced several syntax errors but also some WP:PUFFERY that's not really in accordance with WP:NPOV. These are things that nobody would expect you to know as a new editor, but they're things that would've almost certainly been found if you used the article's talk page to make edit requests. Please understand that neither your family nor anyone else connected to your dad has any form of final editorial control over the article, and all that matters (for the most part) is whether the article(s content satisfies relevant policies and guidelines. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:26, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for that. I shall follow your instructions when I have a bit more time to spare. Joburley (talk) 21:37, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
