DYK for General Frisbie (steamship)

[edit]

On 22 September 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article General Frisbie (steamship), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that General Frisbie (pictured) accidentally sank two ships and disabled a third, was demoted to a Commander, and then turned into a salmon cannery? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/General Frisbie (steamship). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, General Frisbie (steamship)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

This looks wonderful. I seem to recall reading somewhere this boat was known by the unflattering nickname of "Portus B. Weary". I don't understand this "draft" process. Is there some reason why Draft:Portus B. Weare (steamship) can't be fully published now? Also, General Frisbie (steamship) is excellent, as well as your work on John J. Holland. Thanks again, good work in this area.Mtsmallwood (talk) 19:16, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Parentheses for taxonomic authorities

[edit]

Thank you for creating Barbatia reeveana and Carditamera affinis. Placing the name of a taxonomic authority in parentheses has meaning and is not just a typographic quirk. Parentheses indicate that a species was first described in another genus, and later transferred to a different genus. So Carditamera affinis (Sowerby I, 1833) was originally described as Cardita affinis Sowerby I, 1833. If you just make sure to apply parentheses as they are given in sources, you should be good. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited USCGC Ida Lewis (WLM-551), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page DWT (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Recent edits

[edit]

You recently made changes to the article USNS Henry J. Kaiser (T-AO-187), and while I appreciate the effort to improve the article, one of the changes you made was to remove the hidden notification/categorization template ({{Use dmy dates}}), and charging all the dates from day/month/year (dmy) to month/day/year. As an article with a modern US military topic, the dates should be in the dmy format, per WP:MILFORMAT (which is why all the dates were dmy and there was a template notifying as such), so they will need to be changed back, with the "use dmy dates" template re-added. I have not checked your contributions to see if you've changed any other articles in this manner, but if you have, please change them back as well. Thank you - wolf 23:43, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox

[edit]

Just a reminder that per WP:USERNOCAT, user sandbox pages like your User:Jordanroderick/sandbox are not allowed to be filed in mainspace categories as if they were already finished articles. The page may be filed in categories only if and when you move or copy it over into a real mainspace article, and while it's in sandbox your choices are limited to "no categories on the page at all" or "categories present only in disabled form, so that they appear as text links to the category but don't file the page in the category". Since I've had to edit the page more than once to remove it from categories it isn't allowed to be in, just a reminder that you have to be diligent about not leaving the page filed in mainspace categories, because it's disruptive to Wikipedia and wastes other people's time to have to clean that kind of thing up over and over again. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 16:47, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for letting me know about this. I didn't realize it was showing up in the mainspace - sorry to waste your time. How do I disable the categories while I'm working in my sandbox? Thanks! Jordanroderick (talk) 19:38, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I noticed you had lots of links to GenealogyBank in your articles. Did you know that you can clip pages and share the clippings on a publicly viewable page, just like Newspapers.com?

You can search your My Folder or https://www.genealogybank.com/newspaper-clippings, and the resulting pages should have newspaper-clipping in their URLs. This compares to URLs with /doc/newspaper/image/, which may not load without a subscription.
