fishbase.se

[edit]

Hey Lumpsunker, welcome to Wikipedia and thanks for all the fish articles! However, it a bunch of them are referenced only to fishbase.se, which looks like a user-generated source. As a general rule, those aren't the best citations for Wikipedia articles. Are there better sources for you to cite? Rusalkii (talk) 05:47, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! I don't know if you noticed my reply about Fishbase on my talk page, but I just wanted to let you know that the new articles with two sources each are great. Rusalkii (talk) 20:05, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I did notice that. I've been working on trying to find more information on some of the species although a lot of them are very obscure and primarily referenced in old print publications that I do not have access to. Fishbase is often the only source I can find on some of these obscure fish (other than websites that essentially just confirm the fish exists), but even then it typically has only minimal information which is why anyone with access to additional documents should definitely add their findings to the appropriate page. Hi Lumpsucker, thank you for creating the above article. Could you please check reference 2 as it appears to point to the wrong species Microancathus fedorovi JW 1961 Talk 23:23, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No, this is deliberate. The article mentions how FishBase does not recognize the species and instead places the only recognized member of its genus in a different one. Lumpsucker (talk) 00:17, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mass creation of stubs on catfish

[edit]

Hi,

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. You currently appear to be engaged in the mass creation of articles on catfish. Such mass creation can be disruptive, and if you wish to continue creating large quantities of short, similar articles on this topic (or any topic) you should first see if there is a consensus to do so, either at WP:VPR or WP:BOTN; it is possible that the community would prefer this content be provided in a different manner than in a series of small, standalone articles.

Thank you, BilledMammal (talk) 03:27, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I may not be understanding this correctly but it seems as though some of the resources you linked to concern bot-created articles. I am slightly confused as to how I am supposed to use the bot noticeboard to clarify anything related to my contributions. From what I have seen, articles for species are usually individual standalone articles and not presented as part of a larger page of some sort. I have not been notified of any direct disruption caused by this process yet and I am still confused as to why this message was posted when its links seem to involve bot-created pages. Lumpsucker (talk) 04:41, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bot policies also cover bot-like editing, which would include the majority of your article creations. It's not necessarily problematic, but editors need to ensure that there is a consensus for any mass creation they are engaged in, in order to both meet the requirements of WP:MASSCREATE and to avoid causing WP:FAIT issues. BilledMammal (talk) 05:07, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Lumpsucker, I just wanted to provide an alternative viewpoint and say that I think you are doing great work! I believe that all species are notable, and that having stub species articles (with sources) is harmless and can actually be helpful and potentially lead to better articles down the line. I, too, have created new stub species articles in various areas. Keep up the good work! Cougroyalty (talk) 16:54, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There is currently a discussion going on at the village pump on this topic. If you have not done so already, you can check that out to see additional context and points of view from various other users. Lumpsucker (talk) 18:15, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I saw that, which prompted me to comment here. I don't really have much to add to the discussion in addition to what was already said, but I just wanted to lend my support. Cougroyalty (talk) 18:28, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Short descriptions

[edit]

Hi, as you're creating your articles, would you be good enough to include a short description each time, per WP:SHORTDESC? Descriptions should be short (preferably no more than 40 characters), and should avoid using technical terms such as family names. Something simple like "Species of fish" would be OK, but adding a little more detail such as "Species of catfish" would be better. Regards, MichaelMaggs (talk) 09:08, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I can definitely do so. I am currently not sure how to so I will need to read up on that. Lumpsucker (talk) 15:57, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
More than happy to help if need be. MichaelMaggs (talk) 16:25, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I believe that it is. I may be wrong but it seems to be based on what I could find. Lumpsucker (talk) 22:07, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I've written a "probably" kind of description at c:File:DSCN6719 (6260222699).jpg and left it in the c:Category:Unidentified Actinopterygii. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:12, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I believe that Commons has a powerful version Wikipedia:HotCat enabled by default for everyone, so if you feel like re-categorizing images, it's pretty easy. Click on the picture to open the File: page, scroll to the bottom, and use the little buttons to search for existing categories. + lets you add a new one, ↓ lets you see if there is a more specific sub-category available, and so forth.
