I'm no wiki regular, so please excuse if this is wrong place for an inquiry.

In reference to wiki entry: uff da. I have regularly known this term to mean 'difficult task' used in all tenses... usually involving heavy lifting, often upon sudden realization of the difficulty, but, never, in defeat. From full blooded (Iowa) Dane, if that matters. Hope this helps.

Nomination of Roach clip for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Roach clip is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Roach clip until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Horologium (talk) 17:56, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New Suri Cruise AfD

[edit]

Hello. You previously voted in the 2006 AfD for Suri Cruise. At the time, Suri was less than 10 days old, and the ultimate verdict was to turn the article into a redirect to her mother's page.

Since then, Suri has become much more notable in her own right as a toddler fashion icon, with over 13 million hits on google image search. After getting an administrator to lift the protection on the redirect, I recently restored the article as a stub, but an editor who believes that "6 year olds are not inherently notable" has again requested deletion.

If it's not too much trouble, I'd appreciate your making your opinion known at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Suri Cruise (2nd nomination) Warren Dew (talk) 07:28, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to For Ladies Only may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Notification of automated file description generation

[edit]

Your upload of File:Bridgeport reverse.jpg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

This notification is placed on your talk page because a bot has identified you either as the uploader of the file, or as a contributor to its metadata. It would be appreciated if you could carefully review the information the bot added. To opt out of these notifications, please follow the instructions here. Thanks! Penny/Cent

[edit]

This is just a courtesy message to inform you that I've reverted your move of Penny (United States coin) to "Cent (United States coin)" based on the previous consensus to use the name "penny" over "cent" and the fact that WP:COMMONNAME dictates that the name "penny" be used rather than its official name as the "one cent piece" or "one cent coin" or whatever (also the "cent" is merely a decimal unit of the US dollar). Please try to attain a new consensus at the article to use "cent" over "penny" rather than participate in a move war.—Ryūlóng (琉竜) 09:28, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What consensus are you referring to? Matt Gies (talk) 04:20, 17 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Relevant policies and guidelines

[edit]

I reverted the large collection of images at Ghost sign per Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Image_galleries: "Images in a gallery should be carefully selected, avoiding similar or repetitive images, unless a point of contrast or comparison is being made...However, Wikipedia is not an image repository. A gallery is not a tool to shoehorn images into an article, and a gallery consisting of an indiscriminate collection of images of the article subject should generally either be improved in accordance with the above paragraph or moved to Wikimedia Commons." Information icon Thank you for your contributions. Please mark your edits as "minor" only if they are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you. VQuakr (talk) 06:43, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What edit was not minor but was marked as such? Matt Gies (talk) 04:25, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
[1]; [2]. VQuakr (talk) 06:14, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You're wrong on at least three counts: (1) Using a word in strict accordance with its dictionary definition does not require review and is not disputed by an honest person. I always have and will continue to mark such edits as minor. (2) Wikipedia is not a sanitized/Disneyfied version of the facts. (3) The article in question has been and continues to be included in a category using the same word. Matt Gies (talk) 19:00, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It is not possible to repeat an edit that has been reverted and be in compliance with Help:Minor edit. VQuakr (talk) 20:03, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Charleston church shooting. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. VQuakr (talk) 19:48, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Foamite moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Foamite, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. — Amkgp 💬 03:34, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looking back on some other articles that I created, such as Olympic Peninsula and Free body diagram, those also began as tiny stubs with no sources or citations, but they were allowed to remain in place and grow into the full articles they are today. In the same spirit of Wikipedia:Be bold, I created Foamite today as a stub in the hope that others would add to it and it would flourish into a full article. But is this really what Wikipedia has come to? How are people supposed to collaborate if we kill the seeds before they grow? Matt Gies (talk) 06:03, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, there's an article I haven't thought about for 17 years. If memory serves, I was really into the associated Sonic Youth song at the time. WP sure felt a lot more informal back then; I'm surprised the article's still up. Thanks for the notice, but I'll recuse myself from the discussion. Matt Gies (talk) 02:30, 18 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Concern regarding Draft:Foamite

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Matt Gies. This is a bot-delivered message letting you know that Draft:Foamite, a page you created, has not been edited in at least 5 months. Draft space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for article space.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion under CSD G13. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it. You may request userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available here.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia. FireflyBot (talk) 04:02, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Foamite

[edit]

Hello, Matt Gies. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Foamite".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. If you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Liz Read! Talk! 04:01, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

February 2023

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm JalenFolf. I noticed that you recently removed all content from Jimi Calhoun. Please do not do this. Blank pages are harmful to Wikipedia because they have a tendency to confuse readers. As a rule, if you discover a duplicate article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If a page has been vandalised, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you wish to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. May 2024

[edit]

Information icon Please don't change the format of dates, as you did to Cash (Chinese coin). As a general rule, if an article has evolved using predominantly one format, the dates should be left in the format they were originally written in, unless there are reasons for changing it based on strong national ties to the topic. Please also note that Wikipedia does not use ordinal suffixes (e.g., st, nd, th), articles, or leading zeros on dates.

For more information about how dates should be written on Wikipedia, please see this page.

If you have any questions about this, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Enjoy your time on Wikipedia. Thank you. Remsense 01:45, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So the Wikipedia policy is "keep the year style that the article started with"? That's the stupidest of all justifications, "tradition". Whereas a perfectly good reason not to use "BC" and "AD" is that they imply belief in Jesus Christ. If I had more time on my hands, that's a policy that I would vehemently fight to change. But instead I'll just register my displeasure here. Matt Gies (talk) 02:12, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you want, I can try to explain why I think WP:ERA is the best policy pragmatically, and also why I personally don't feel BCE/CE are better labels than BC/AD. But I will otherwise allow you to vent in peace. Remsense 02:22, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
